Vans Warped Tour 2011
Earlier this month in Mountain View, California, the 17th annual Vans Warped Tour hit its seventh venue of the summer, and brought over sixty bands out to shred the stages. This year's theme, "We Are Warped" was in full effect, pointing out how the tour is a huge collective effort of so many walks of life, styles of music, and age groups.

What started years ago as a DIY punk rock festival, fused with extreme sports like motocross, skateboarding, and BMX shows, now has become more focused on showcasing a huge number of bands from a variety of musical genres, and providing an opportunity for fans to get to meet and hang out with the bands between sets.

Vans Warped Tour Not having seen the tour since 2002, I was bummed that the lineups were not the punk acts I used to enjoy like NOFX, Lagwagon, and Bad Religion, and have instead shifted to mostly metal-core and screamo bands.

While things are always destined to change, it's always been a cool opportunity for kids to get out and see all their favorite bands in one venue, at a decent price.

Sixty-plus bands, playing half-hour sets on five different stages must be a nightmare to plan...

Relient K

Relient K

K is for Karaoke

A Relient "K"lassic

When you think of an album full of covers, you normally think of a lot of classic songs like "Endless Love" and "We are Family," changed just enough to make it an artist's own. And, unless you're wild about the band, it can become trite and overdone.

But in Relient K's EP K is for Karoake, they mix things up a bit, interspersing oldies with contemporary songs that you wouldn't think to find in your typical karaoke-type disc.

The first track is "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun," a Cyndi Lauper classic. It's actually really well done, though I have to say, it's rare to hear a man singing that song...

FM Static
Thousand Foot Krutch / FM Static

Live with Trevor McNevan

Keeping things honest

FM Static's brand new album, My Brain Says Stop, But My Heart Says Go dropped in April this week (read the review here) and I had the great pleasure of getting to chat with Trevor McNevan, who pulls double duty as frontman of both Thousand Foot Krutch and FM Static.

Hollywood Jesus: Alright let's start with the basics. I'm a long time fan, so this is a real treat! I've always wanted to know where the names FM Static and Thousand Foot Krutch came from.

Trevor McNevan: Hey man, thanks so much for your support and for listening. FM Static was one of those names we just kind of pulled out of a hat at random, honestly. TFK on the other hand had a little more meaning to it, though... it just represents our support system and, you know, our Krutch being because we can't make it on our own without that support.

HJ: So TFK has been rocking hard since the '90s. Was FM Static a natural outpouring of that or maybe another side to your personality, or how did that start?

TM: Well, we actually signed a deal on the first record with FM Static before TFK, which is a little known fact, and weren't sure what would happen. Over the years it's been a real blessing and it kept growing and developed its own legs. Now this will be our fourth record, coming out April 5th.
