Three
The End of The Fantastic Four

Over the years, the Fantastic Four have gone through some changes. At times members of the team were temporarily replaced. But when you hear a story arc called "Three", one can't help but think Is this it?

Fantastic Four, unlike other titles under Marvel, has never had a change in numbering or been replaced. So when Marvel announced that Fantastic Four will be ending with issue 588 following a death of a team member, it's a big deal. I mean, this made the NY Daily News, a rarity for comics in general.

Although Marvel tried to conceal which member will ultimately meet his fate, fans all over unanimously knew that it will end up being Johnny Storm (Human Torch). Reed Richards (Mr. Fantastic) is too valuable in the Marvel universe; Sue Storm-Richards (Invisible Woman) is a mother and wife; Ben Grimm (The Thing) was just added to the New Avengers roster at the start of The Heroic Age.

So, basically, the odd man out is Johnny. He's always been the "hot" head of the group and was always careless, and never really matured enough. Which is why it was easy to see, and maybe way too predictable, that when the need for one to make an ultimate sacrifice was at hand, all that Johnny wasn't, he became in that one moment.

Age of XLately, things have been more of a fight for survival rather than just defending others. First they went through a decimation of mutants. Then they spent their time protecting a baby who was meant to be their savior. Finally, they've been trying to restore their image as defenders. But what if none of that happened. What if the X-Men never existed?

We may have been frozen for decades-if not literally, then metaphorically. The best thing is that Jesus is our "Avengers." He comes to wake us up from our frozen state and gives us purpose in this world.

For a comic that dates from 1941, it is filled with stories that resonate today. Simon and Kirby were ahead of their time in regards to writing and art.
