At a New York City press event, Nolfi said he purposefully placed clues in the film so that the audience could ponder if it is really chance that David and Elise keep meeting and fall in love or is something larger happening? One example of these indications is the use of sun imagery at certain key moments, and also seemingly random events that happen to Harry (Anthony Mackie).

 

If it is possible that the Chairman is orchestrating David and Elise's romance from the beginning, then David's pursuit of Elise wouldn't be a false lead but part of a larger plan-even if this plan is unknown to the angelic-like agents. It is clear that David's pursuit of Elise changes him in many positive ways.
