Hogwarts Expressions

Hollywood Jesus will be providing special coverage of the Harry Potter series in conjunction with the release of the last two movies.  Chelsea Rae Nagy is a recent college graduate who has read all seven books at least nine times and knows them like the back of her hand. Chelsea will be sharing an overview of the series with her spiritual reflections on the books. Why would a committed Christian devote so much time to a set of books about "wizards" and "witchcraft"? Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets

The Genuine Article
Gilderoy Lockhart's Chamber of Secrets

What does it mean to be a genuine person? Literally, it means being open and candid and honest. But applicably, what does it mean?

To me, it means being free from pretense, but does not equivocate full disclosure.

Harry Potter is a genuine person. He may lie on occasion and hide things from his teachers and other authority figures, but he is honestly fighting against evil and true to his friends.

There is a new professor in Hogwarts in Harry's second year, Gilderoy Lockhart. He is flamboyant and phony, but has a magnificent track record of defeating hags and untransforming werewolves.

Harry Potter and the Chamber of SecretsHe has written a series of books on his adventures with titles like Break with a Banshee, Gadding with Ghouls, and Year with the Yeti, among others that feature vampires and trolls.

All of these books make up the required reading list for Defense against the Dark Arts, and he's always willing to hand out a free copy of his autobiography, Magical Me.

Harry's first meeting with him does not impress the twelve year old wizard, or his friend Ron...

Will Narnia 4 Compete with The Hobbit?
01/15/11 | 4 Comments

The Voyage of the Dawn Treader
continues to do swimmingly overseas, with the foreign box office nearing $250 million, helped by its $5+ million opening in China. It seems likely that the worldwide total will hit $350 million sometime next week, with the domestic total nearing the $100 million benchmark. (See Variety's article, 'Tangled' tops at overseas B.O.)

I mentioned Sunday that I thought Dawn Treader's box office prospects were bright enough that we would see Fox and Walden Media green lighting a fourth film. That has not happened yet, but I will let you know when and if I hear anything.

Tuesday, "fantasia_kitty" posted an interesting article on NariaWeb.com with her analysis of the profitability of the film.

Whatever the realities of of the financial situation, executives have to also consider the competition a fourth Narnia movie would be facing. With news that filming for the Hobbit movies will indeed begin next month, the slated dates for the two films (December 2012 and 2013) now seem extremely likely.

It would be virtually impossible to produce another Narnia film for release this year (despite the rumors), so it would be likely that The Silver Chair (or perhaps The Magician's Nephew) would face a Hobbit movie head-to-head, unless they decided on a different month to release it. But I doubt Fox and Walden would want to move away from the Christmas/winter theme which worked so well for The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, and arguably for The Dawn Treader, too. The Silver Chair does have some snow in it, too, and I would imagine the execs would like to use that to their advantage linking the films together.

So, what do you think? Will Walden and Fox be willing to green light another movie? Can a fourth Narnia picture do well up against a Hobbit film? Please feel free to leave your comments.
