  Country Strong
  Love and Fame Tim Berroth
We have all heard the joke about the lyrics of a typical country song: "my wife left me, my dog died and I lost my truck." While not quite so obvious, writer and director Shana Feste's Country Strong comes pretty close to nailing every possible cliche.

The Best Films of 2010: Two Different Perspectives

For many years now, Darrel Manson has published his annual "Darrel's Dozen," which reflects his preference for indie films... and openness to the broader market.  For quite a few years, if not as many, Jacob Sahms has also been offering up his list of more mainstream films.  Click through for the full lists...

  Darrel's Dozen for 2010

And a Pretty Decent Year at That
One of the trends that I think is promising is that I have films here from throughout the year. Only a few are from the year end awards season.

And my No. 1 pick is The Secret of Kells.   What, a cartoon at #1?  It is one of the most beautiful pieces of animation in a long time, a true visual feast.  It is also a wonderful examination of the role of the Gospel in the life of the church... especially when striving to survive threatens to overpower the urge to share the Gospel.

And More Than Just 10 Makes a Good Year
My movie list for 2010: the movies which inspired me, made me laugh/cry, and most of all, made me consider life as I know it.

And my No. 1 pick is The Fighter. Despite a career-making performance by Christian Bale, this movie is more than simply the story of two brothers, a movie about boxing, or the "normal" biopic that headlines Oscar performances. Instead, it combines the best of all of them, shines a spotlight on family dysfunction, drug abuse, and the power of forgiveness and reconciliation. We are capable of change.

  Dinner for Schmucks
"You may say that I'm a dreamer..." Nate Watts

Now on Blu-ray. Most of the movie, it's one of those "Oh no, please don't do that..." movies, where you keep feeling worse for the protagonist (see also Meet the Parents or Cable Guy).
