As Jean-Jacques Rousseau reminds us, "Our greatest evil flows from ourselves." Perhaps the sentiment that best describes our attitude toward evil is stated by noted "sociologist" Mae West when she said, "When choosing between two evils, I always like to try the one I've never tried before."

This duality has been fertile ground for screen and stage.  The struggle between competing natures makes for great drama.  This conflict is often best seen in the tragic hero or the anti-hero who is a deeply flawed character that nonetheless finds a path to redemption. 
 

Possibly the best known example of this duality is Dr. Jekyll and his alter ego, Mr. Hyde.  Robert Louis Stevenson penned (The) Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde in the late 1800s.  It is an effective tale in part because it is among the most overt of this genre...
