The Voyage of the Dawn TreaderThe Reviews are In

Better the Second (and Third) Time

"The first to present his case seems right, till another comes forward and questions him." Proverbs 18:17 (NIV)

In my "first impressions" review of The Voyage of the Dawn Treader, I expressed regret that I knew to much about the film before I saw the pre-screening. These past three weeks have been one of turmoil inside myself as I debated how well I liked the movie.

For those who are fans of the books, "our first love will always have to be" the books. So it's important to realize that it would be impossible to incorporate everything from the books into the movie. Even the Focus on the Family Radio Theatre version (whose creators were dedicated to making the series "the most faithful rendition" ever) made changes adapting the books.

So, when I went to see the movie again (both in 2-D and 3-D) this weekend, I was determined, as I had told Dr. Brown, to "to sit back and relax and enjoy what's there instead of trying to pick out what's not." What a difference. The second and third looks have me hooked.  I am enthralled.

Micheal Flaherty:
Challenges, and Phony Challenges

I had a chance to talk briefly on the phone with Micheal Flaherty, one of the founders of Walden Media, the production company behind The Chronicles of Narnia films as well as several other films.

Let me start by asking about your own relationship to the Narnia books and how that has affected Walden's part in the films?

I remember my brother Chip bought the books at the Burlington Mall-our office is actually in back of the place he first bought the books-and he read them to me. So I grew up loving them, then later on in life Lewis's other books, particularly Mere Christianity and [The] Screwtape [Letters] had a really profound effect on me, so I've been a big Lewis lover...

Dawn Treader Sailing to Top of Box Office

In comparison, The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe took in $65.5 million its first weekend, and Prince Caspian, $55 million.

As was shown by the box office numbers for Tangled, future results will depend largely on word-of-mouth evaluations from those who have seen the movie. Tangled exploded in its second week, going from just under $20 million its first week to $55 million its second. So, much will depend of whether Dawn Treader "grows legs."

I will try to keep you informed through the coming weeks. In the meantime, go see the movie! It's great.

CHRISTIAN ACADEMY IN LOUISVILLE, KENTUCKY,

LOS ANGELES, CA (December 7, 2010) -Twentieth Century Fox and Walden Media, in association with Operation Christmas Child and Regal Cinemas, today announced the winner of THE CHRONICLES OF NARNIA: THE VOYAGE OF THE DAWN TREADER / OPERATION NARNIA "Hometown Premiere Challenge." The winner is Christian Academy in Louisville Kentucky.

Among the competing organizations and groups, Christian Academy created the most shoebox-sized gift boxes for needy children worldwide. The students will host a special premiere event and screening of the film, which will be attended by two of the film's stars - Georgie Henley and Skandar Keynes. The event will take place on December 9th at The Regal Hamburg Pavilion 16 cinemas in nearby Lexington.

"Congratulations to Christian Academy of Louisville," stated Randy Riddle, Domestic Director of Operation Christmas Child. "We want to thank you for helping us give Christmas to needy children around the world. We are on track to exceed the previous year's shoe box gift donations from the U.S. and are excited to have partnered this year with 20th Century Fox and Walden Media."

Last year, Operation Christmas Child delivered more than 8 million shoebox gifts to needy children around the globe. Operation Christmas Child is a project of Samaritan's Purse, the international relief and evangelism organization headed by Franklin Graham. Since 1993, Operation Christmas Child, the world's largest Christmas project, has hand-delivered gift boxes in over 130 countries to more than 77 million children. For many of these children, these are the first presents they've ever received.

Devin Brown on Dawn Treader
...and Walden's Narnia Series as a Whole

"You and I have a list of things that we wished had been there... As you said, everyone has their favorite part that they wish made it in the movie. ...whether you agree with everything in the movie or not, you will have to agree (I don't know how you can not agree.) that these films are going to bring people to read the books who may have never read them otherwise."
