An unlikely and often overlooked pioneer in the world of Science Fiction is George Méliès, a successful Parisian stage performer in the late 1800s. As a magician, he made his trade in illusion. Like anyone who pursues a passion, Méliès consistently developed his skills to enhance the wonder produced by his creations.
Providentially, it was also about this time that motion picture film production was in its infancy.
The Edison Company, the Lumière brothers, and others had begun to release short films in the early 1890s. Méliès quickly realized that this was a match made in nitrate Heaven. Because movies are, by their very nature, illusions and Méliès was an illusionist, he realized that the two could be coupled to create something wonderful.
Méliès recognized that he could significantly add to his theatrical repertoire by the addition of trick films. Further, filming these fantasies allowed them to be flawlessly executed at each performance. Barring an occasional projector malfunction, there was little room for human error...

Can You Get Enough? Jacob Sahms
Now on Blu-ray. I can't get enough of Pandora, or the Na'vi, even though I am rarely swayed solely by the hype (Inception... what?) or the big price tag. And the latest edition of Avatar comes through with the goods.
