Reflections from a Christian College Undergrad
Can a Committed Christian be a Scientist?

Being a Christian in ScienceIn his 1997 book Being a Christian in Science, Walter Hearn focuses on the theme of integrating science and Christian faith, specifically in how one can be both a scie ntist and a Christian. Hearn stresses the fact that the Christian community has a somewhat negative view of scientific work as a profession and that very little support is given to Christians who are called to pursue such careers. However, Hearn claims that scientific investigation can be an act of worship, that science itself stems from a Christian worldview, and that it is currently an exciting time to enter into a career in science.


The idea that the Christian community does not do a good job of supporting Christians who want to pursue careers in science is first noted by author Nancy R. Pearcey in a blurb across from the title page: "Reformation-based churches profess that all truth is God's truth, yet few give as much encouragement to young people going into scientific fields as to those going into the mission field."
