Greetings from Petoskey, Michigan.
I am sitting here in my motel room (with a great view of the Little Traverse Bay of Lake Michigan, by the way) after enjoying an informative and entertaining presentation by Dr. Diana Glyer. Her keynote address at the C S Lewis Festival was fabulous. Not only is she obviously an expert on Lewis and JRR Tolkien, but also an effective speaker. Her reading from Tolkien's poem, The Tale of Tinúviel, was a sheer delight.
Glyer continues on the subject of "Lewis & Tolkien: The Story Behind the Phenomenon" tomorrow. (I am planning to review her book, The Company They Keep: C. S. Lewis and J. R. R. Tolkien as Writers in Community for Hollywood Jesus by the end of this year.) She will be joined by the editor of The Annotated Hobbit, Douglas Anderson.
If you are in the area, come join us! There are still seats available for this event. See the C S Lewis Festival website for more information. Click here.
Dawn Treader director Michael Apted recently did an interview for SFX magazine. The full article is scheduled to appear in an upcoming edition, and the SFX website has a preview here. Apted reveals We were able to steal, really, from the book CS Lewis didn't write, which is the one that would have gone between The Dawn Treader and The Silver Chair. ...there were elements that we were able to draw out of that non-existent story and inject into this story to give it a bit more sense of purpose. ...it enabled us to find a stronger reason for the journey, since there is no real reason for the journey as it stands.
What do you think about what Apted said? Does he have a point, or is what he is saying what Lewis would describe as "pure moonshine"?
