Conviction
No Greater Love Maurice Broaddus
Aimed at the coveted heartland audience, Conviction goes through the
expected little-person triumphs over the looming system. By sheer
gravitas of its story, plus Swank's and Rockwell's performances, the
audience is carried along for the ride. |

Devil
Pseudoreligious David Bruce
Shyamalan produces this time out. Would it have been better if he directed? No. I must say that this movie has nothing to do with The Bible's Devil. He's not at all interested in being an agent of justice. This is like an avenging angel who takes the lives of innocents in order to persuade guilty parties to go straight. Yep.

Featured Interview, Part I: Derrick Warfel
Director Derrick Warfel Talks Shop Greg Wright
"We knocked on a lot of doors," says the director of the upcoming DVD release Midnight Reckoning.
"They want blood and they want sex-and if they don't get it, they're
just not interested. Either that, or they want big stars' names. ... So you have to garner some attention or interest by having some kind of theatrical [release], even if it's limited.
"There
are a lot of films, if you've noticed, listed in your paper that have a 'limited release,' that say New York or Los Angeles. And the reason that is, is that the theatrical release sets the tone for all the other prices that you get along the way. That
may be changing [soon], but that's still pretty much the thing: the
more interest you get in the theatrical, the more sales you're going to
get down the line. So there's a huge benefit to doing a theatrical if you can afford it, even a very limited theatrical. And
the idea of giving it away was that, normally, at a bare minimum, it
takes about $200,000, and usually it's about $500,000, to do a theatrical
release. Even if it's five to ten cities." Click through for the full interview.Next week, Warfel talks about the very overt spiritual content of Midnight Reckoning.

Hatchet II Ed Travis | 10/17/10 | Comment HereKane Hodder told me that he ends every interview by choking the
journalist. I said "Please do." And Adam Green took a picture of Jason
Voorhees / Victor Crowley choking me! Good times. Stone
Ed Travis | 10/17/10 | Comment Here"I think that dissonance takes him down, you know?" says Norton of
De Niro's character. "John was always trying to get to the idea that
there might be the possibility for this guy to have the chance at
change in his life if he could open up." |

The Karate Kid
Seeing With More Than Your Eyes Jacob Sahms
Now on Blu-ray. I wanted to hate this movie. Really, I did. But
the end result is still glorious: you've got to find your balance,
believe in yourself, and keep the main thing the main thing.
