Animal Kingdom
Red in Tooth and Claw Darrel Manson
No, Animal Kingdom is not a wildlife documentary, but it is very
much a story of survival in a world based in violence. Just as Tennyson
spoke of nature as, "red in tooth and claw," life among the Cody family
is deadly serious. Also Reviewed...

Featured Interview: Producer Kevin Downes
Going for the Glory... God's Glory Greg Wright
In a recent telephone interview,
Downes confirmed for me that he's very pleased that his chosen ministry
has put him in the company of a new generation of Christian filmmakers
that includes Gary Wheeler, David A.R. White, Mark Freiburger, Tracy
Trost, Chad Gundersen, and Dallas Jenkins-among others. The
Downes brothers are part of a movement that's producing first-rate
entertainment which nonetheless reflects a solid Christian worldview...
sans the cheese and sermons.
And in the same way that Rich Christiano and Ralph
Winter helped guide Kevin and Bobby through the pitfalls and adventures
of indie filmmaking on the fringes of Hollywood, Kevin is excited to be
able to play a similar role for Jon Gunn, sophomore director of the
Downes' latest project, Like Dandelion Dust-a film that is having heaps of awards thrust upon it.

ABOUT HAMARTIA: In old Greek, the word for "sin" had the sense of
an archer hitting something else other than the target. At Hollywood
Jesus, we try each week to talk about pop culture from a spiritual
point of view in a way that welcomes discussion from all sides. We very
often miss that mark... and we're not okay with that. This is the place
where we try to make amends. Host Monique Bos is your guide.
Relationship Films Revisited 09/12/10 | Comment Here Relationships are a significant element of being human,
of fully experiencing life. How we relate to others forms a core
element of our self-identification--as gay or straight, as people of
certain spiritual persuasions, as parents and children and friends and
siblings and spouses.
I believe that Christianity is, or should be,
primarily about relationships, both with God and with others, rather
than about dogma or judgment. It should be about healing and
redemption, about sacrifice and grace.
This is why, if you'll forgive a
digression from movies, I'm disturbed by the expressions of
anti-Islamic thought and sentiment that have swept through the United
States during the past few weeks, many of them propagated by so-called
Christians.
Jesus dealt with individuals, related to people
as individuals. Love, a fundamentally relational construct, is at the
core of his teaching. It's tragic, at least to me, that some who claim
to be his followers have allowed paranoia and hatred to become the
defining aspects of their beliefs. Maybe that's where hamartia fits into this column. Okay, off my soapbox and on to some movie reviews... Click through for the full article...
