Live Music in San Luis Obispo Nate Watts, Music Editor
Once we finally got in, we were treated to a mellow offering of
tunes from the Jane Carrey Band. We
were all really enjoying her jazzy Norah Jones-style voice until
someone mentioned she was actor, Jim Carrey's daughter. This made
everyone quickly pull out iPhones to fact-check this statement, and
sure enough, she is!
On came Mat Kearney, armed only with an acoustic guitar, his
signature hat and tie, and the awesome background harmonies of fellow
acoustic guitarist Tyler Burkum. I'd love to hear more from this
artist, who is not only a good friend of Kearney's but also an
incredibly talented musician. The two of them played well off of each
other and performed some tight harmonies and guitar riff battles on an
acoustic set of all of Kearney's biggest hits. Despite some drunk dancing club-goers' wishes, Kearney's talking and backstories to his songs were what was really intriguing...

Katy Perry
Sex sells, but much deeper
Raise your hand if you haven't heard "California Gurls" a bajillion
times this Summer... No one?... I thought not.
Katy Perry has rocked the
music world since her One of the Boys album in 2008 by
infiltrating our eardrums with saccharine-sweet, innuendo-laden, pop
gems... and looking great on the cover of just about every magazine
possible. After huge hits we were all ashamed to sing at the top of our
lungs like "Waking Up In Vegas," "Hot N Cold," and "I Kissed a Girl,"
Perry has actually topped herself on Teenage Dream, and matured a bit in the process.

MercyMe lead singer Bart Millard
HJ: God has used MercyMe in mighty ways since the band's inception. Of the many I'm sure you've experienced, can you describe one example of how God has been the architect of a MercyMe accomplishment, record, milestone, or achievement?
Bart: When "I Can Only Imagine" blew up at mainstream radio, it was very surreal. To have a blatantly Christian song take off like it did, is a total God thing.
HJ: MercyMe on the dance floor! The very first notes of the new album's opener "This Life" suggest that MercyMe is dedicated to bringing the ancient message of God's love and purpose to today's listeners in a fresh, modern way. Can you describe the experiences that contributed to making the sounds of The Generous Mr. Lovewell?
Bart: We just wanted to make a fun, current record. We recorded the album in El Paso,Tx where we locked ourselves away from everything and simply made music. Hopefully it shows how much we enjoyed making the album together.
