New Music on the Horizon Nate Watts, Music Editor
I'm really not sure where the summer went, but August is here now
and the last remaining days of summer are proving to be pretty filled
with good music. Here's a list of some big releases coming your way in
the coming months: August 17th- Ray LaMontagne & The Pariah Dogs, God Willin' and the Creek Don't Rise
After three solo albums, Grammy-nominated folk act, LaMontagne will be
joined by the legendary musicians, backing up his gritty and earthy
sound. The first single "Beg, Steal or Borrow" sounds a lot more full
and a little twangy, but LaMontagne's unique vocals are still at the
forefront. August 24th- Jeremy Camp, We Cry Out Camp appears to have the Midas touch when it comes to putting out
records. This Worship project will be his seventh outing and is sure to
be another success for the talented musician. "Jesus Saves" is already
getting airplay, and many Camp covers like "Everlasting God" and
"Mighty to Save" will also be present. Look for more heartfelt praise,
and a new tour from him soon. Katy Perry, Teenage Dream This one is sure to be a blockbuster follow-up to her 2008 One of the Boys smash success. No more kissing girls or waking up in Vegas for her. Despite the pop fun of summer anthem "California Gurls," Dream promises
to go much deeper than her last disc did. Don't worry, it will still be
one of those guilty pleasure discs, but perhaps our pop princess is
growing up a little with her upcoming wedding to Russell Brand on the
horizon. Her new single "Teenage Dream" dropped last week and its
popularity is still soaring. September 21st- Maroon 5, Hands All Over Funk crooners responsible for hits like "This Love," "Wake Up Call,"
and "She Will Be Loved" will be dropping their third and perhaps, final
album next month. Rumors of retirement and wanting to quit while
they're young and ahead has fans all hoping it's not true. "Misery,"
their first single, is seeing increasing airplay and a big tour is on
beginning in October. We'll have to wait and see! October 5th- Matthew West, The Story of Your Life Recently, West put out a call to fans to send stories of hope and
restoration and thousands answered. His new disc will feature songs
based on fan responses collaborated under the common theme. The first
single, "My Own Little World" challenges the listener to step outside
their bubbles and to reach out to those around them. Lyrics include the
great line "What if there's a bigger picture, what if I'm missing out?
Show me there's a greater purpose I could be living right now." |

Kylie Minogue
Aussie Dance Pop Comeback album
Following 2002's huge comeback with hits like "Can't Get You Out Of
My Head" and "Come Into My World," Minogue's next few albums never
seemed to live up to the pop princess's abilities. Aphrodite marks
a triumphant return to the dance floor and shows that she can still
compete with the likes of Lady Gaga and Ke$ha, and is ready to be
bathed in strobe light.
"All The Lovers" marks her introduction to the new generation and
especially over here in the States. Already huge overseas, Minogue's
first single has been moving steadily up the charts as her song about
starting anew and overcoming comparison...

Weezer and All Time Low
It was a good summer for music at the California Mid State Fair.
Veteran rockers Sammy Hagar and Aerosmith made appearances, Toby Keith
and Keith Urban represented the country music spectrum and modern
rockers 311 and The Offspring even shared a night on stage. The show
that got me most excited (and no, I'm not talking about Justin Beiber)
was the last acts to be added, Weezer and All Time Low.
Pop-punk rockers All Time Low were definitely not the main draw for
the night of July 29th in Paso Robles, California, but by the end of
the show I had some serious respect for the band.
Then, once the stage was set, all members of Weezer began an instrumental
power-rock intro, minus lead singer Rivers Cuomo. Standing at only five
feet six inches, but armed with his puffy vest and nerd-rock glasses,
Cuomo triumphantly swaggered onto the stage to cheers and "W" hand
signs to belt out the lyrics to their opening track, "Hash Pipe", off
their 2000 Green Album. Always the entertaining frontman, Cuomo led his band in all the big singles and fan favorites over their sixteen year career...
