None other than Albert Einstein said, "Imagination is more important than knowledge."  Coming from a Nobel Prize winner and a man whose name is synonymous with brilliance, this is quite a statement. 

In an age saturated by technology, true imagination is becoming a rare commodity.  Whereas authentic horror relies on the imagination of the audience, many films now substitute special effects and gore as poor surrogates for a mind's vision. 

True horror recognizes that whatever I imagine is beating on the door is much worse than anything a filmmaker can show me.  A great horror film -- in fact any great film -- attempts to open the door of the imagination and take the viewer to places which ordinarily the five senses do not venture.  Such journeys do not require lavish budgets, they simply require imagination.

This vibrancy is on full display in The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (1920), a silent film directed by Robert Wiene...
