In our neighborhood, there are a number of restaurants my family enjoys going to.  Sometimes, we're in a mood for Mexican food; at others, Indian sounds like a good choice; still others find us clamoring for simple American fare.  These different types of dining options have over time helped to not only expose us to the flavors of the world, but have introduced us to new customs, sounds, and smells, further broadening our perspectives of the world we live in.

With summer only a week away, it's time to make your reading list for those long car rides, hours on a sun-drenched beach, or rainy afternoons.  Make sure to stop by your local bookstore, as many of the current bestsellers have an international flavor to them.  Steig Larsson, a native of Scandanavia, just released The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest, his latest tale of mystery and intrigue.  Alexander McCall Smith adds the flavor of Zimbabwe in The Double Comfort Safari Club.  And make sure to look out for Malawi-born William Kamkwamba's The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind in mid-July.

Of course, there are tons of new releases from American authors, including Stephenie Meyer (adding to her popular Twilight series with The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner [available to read for free here]), chef Anthony Bourdain (Medium Raw), talk show host Glenn Beck (The Overton Window), and Janet Evanovich (Sizzling Sixteen).

It is our hope at Hollywood Jesus that you spend time broadening your perspective of the world as we take a look at pop culture from a spiritual point of view.   As always, if you have any questions or comments, please let us know.  We truly want to hear from you!

Until then, have a great month, and happy reading!

Pure Scum: The Left-Out,

And The Grace Of God

What Will It Take To Get Your Attention?
Rock'n'Roll Way To Community

That's the name of the church. When the book about the founding, development, and implementation arrived on my desk, I just let it sit there for a while. I'm all about hearing people's stories, and hearing how different faith communities try things in their own way. But I found the name of the church sort of off-putting, not because I don't have a perception of myself as broken, fallen, dirty, or anything else in its sinful state, but because I've always focused on the grace-filled, saved, cleaned-up side of things after the inclusion of Jesus, I found this to be a bit strange.

And then I actually read the book.

Pastor Mike Sares admits that he wasn't a big fan of the name, that he found it off-putting, dangerous, and a little bit off-the-grid. But then he figured out that this church was aimed at the "left out and the right brained," and that it longed to be a church that "desperately recognizes its need for a savior."

Well, I can be down for that! Seriously, I'm glad I read it, and thankfully, Likewise decided to send it my way...
