10 Books for Courageous Fathers and Sons Rusty Martin, Sr., Guest Columnist It's Father's Day and no doubt you're thinking about your Father.
Here on the set of Courageous, the next project from
Sherwood Pictures (Fireproof and Facing the Giants), we are certainly thinking about fatherhood. The
movie centers around four police officers, their lives, and their role
as fathers.
Most of us get out of high school or college and never pick up another
book the rest of our lives. But a wise man once told me that "leaders
are readers." Books allow us to stand on the shoulders of others.
The books in this list come from my collection at home in Raleigh, NC,
and all have a central theme: Courageous Fatherhood. They've helped
shape who I am, and my son Rusty, too... also on set this week!

Toy Story 3
What A Friend We Have In Andy Mark Sommer
On this Father's Day, it is interesting to note that there are no
fathers shown in the movie. However, the young Andy, just about to
enter college, shows some fatherly wisdom and unselfishness toward a
neighbor child.

The Birth of A Nation: The Principle of Context
Winston Churchill said, "History is written by the victors." Given that the defeated are left powerless, it is for the conquerors to proclaim their righteous triumph. The vanquished are rendered silent. This is not the case for the epic film The Birth of a Nation. Grand in its sweep, the production relates the story of the Civil War from the Southern side of the Mason/Dixon line. Griffith's movie was based on the novel The Clansman by Thomas Dixon. It was made in 1915, just 50 years after the end of the War Between the States. Many
playwrights and filmmakers, including Griffith, observed this
semicentennial anniversary by producing works recognizing the
then-recent conflict. The Birth of a Nation
employed groundbreaking yet now-common camera techniques such as deep
focus, suspenseful intercutting, special effects, and the close-up. At the time of its release, it broke existing American box office records. The American Film Institute voted The Birth of a Nation one of the "Top 100 American Films." But in its depiction of the post-Civil War Reconstruction, The Birth of a Nation descends into patent racism and prejudice...
