New staff and new ideas at Aquafeed towers!
We are pleased to announce the appointment of a new Associate Editor here at International Aquafeed.
 | Alice Neal |
Alice Neal joins us from a background in journalism, and is very excited to be working with the rest of the team under Editor Professor Simon Davies. As soon as Alice joined us she was full of new ideas about what we can do with the magazine and is looking forward to the challenge of integrating some new sections into International Aquafeed.
The first of these (you can see in our NEW edition below) is the EXPERT TOPIC section, that we will now be running in each edition, and also a 'Aquaculture Industry view' column, that will allow us to bring you the thoughts of some top industry figures.
We hope you enjoy the new additions, and keep watching this space for more ideas throughout the remainder of the year. Alice would love to hear your thoughts on the new materials, and the magazine in general - so please feel free to contact her (alicen@perendale.co.uk) with your views.
Sincerely
Tuti Tan Circulation and Events Manager International Aquafeed

NEW SINGLE PAGE VIEW FEATURES
|
We have had feedback recently from you - our readers.
You have been telling us that the double-page features that you have been enjoying for the last few years are becoming a little hard to read, due to the way our distribution sites display them as double-page spreads - and the fact that more and more of you are using small ultra-portable laptops and tablet computers. To address the issue (and hopefully reduce the amount of time you are spending with the zoom button!), we have switched to a single page view on all of our online features, that we hope will make things a little easier for you to read.
The IAF team hopes you enjoy this issue's offering, and would love to hear your views on these improvements!

| Fishmeal alternative research
Scientists at the University of Liverpool are developing a new plant-based product that could replace fishmeal. The university is leading a consortium to resolve the fishmeal issue by fermenting plant protein sources, which will use 'good bacteria' to predigest food and make nutrients more available for absorption in the gut.
Dr Iain Young, from the University's Institute of Integrative Biology, says, "Fermentation methods could predigest the toxins and anti-nutrients in plant protein food, making it easier for the fish to absorb and maintain overall good health. It will help resolve current technical limitations of the product and address the concerns about overfishing and food shortage in the years to come." - Read full story __________________________________________________________ Scotland officially ISA free Scotland has been given the all clear from infectious salmon anaemia (ISA). Fish farms in the south west Shetland mainland area have been under restrictions since 2009.
Environment Minister Stewart Stevenson says, "This is clearly good news for the reputation of the Scottish aquaculture industry and is a healthy reflection of close cooperation between the Scottish salmon aquaculture industry and Marine Scotland following the outbreak of ISA in 2009." - Read full story __________________________________________________________ Study: Increasing risk from hatchery salmon A collection of over 20 studies by leading university scientists and government fishery researchers provides mounting evidence that salmon raised in man-made hatcheries can harm wild salmon through competition for food and habitat. The research volume, published in the May issue of Environmental Biology of Fishes, includes pieces from Alaska, British Columbia, Washington, Oregon, California, Russia and Japan. The studies provide new evidence that fast-growing hatchery fish compete with wild fish for food and habitat in the ocean as well as in the rivers where they return to spawn. The research also raises questions about whether the ocean can supply enough food to support future increases in hatchery fish while still sustaining the productivity of wild salmon. - Read full story __________________________________________________________ Raising barramundi in tough waters
Robert Taylor of MPA explains how the tough conditions at Cone Bay, Australia produce top class barramundi. When, in January this year, Western Australian Environment Minister Bill Marmion signed off on an application by Marine Produce Australia (MPA) to harvest 2000 tonnes of top quality barramundi at the Cone Bay operation in the State's vast far north, he did more than just double the company's existing production license.
After eight years and around $50 million in research and development by MPA on one of the world's most remote aquaculture ventures, Marmion sent a signal to the world that finally the waters off the Australia's north-west coast with their huge tides were open for business. Cone Bay in the Buccaneer Archipelago is 100km from the nearest town, Derby (pop.3380), which in turn is 2400km north of the West Australian capital Perth (pop 2million). The Kimberley as the northern part of Western Australia is known, occupies some 421,000 square kilometres with a total population of just 25,000 people. - Read full story |

Neil Sims, co-CEO Kampachi Farms, to chair Offshore Mariculture Conference 2012
Co-Founder and co-CEO of Kampachi Farms, Neil Sims, has been confirmed as the Chairman of the 2012 Offshore Mariculture Conference. Sims will bring with him a wealth of knowledge and experience as, over the past two decades, he has led teams that have accomplished a number of breakthrough developments in pearl oyster culture, offshore aquaculture legislation and regulation, marine fish hatchery technology, open ocean mariculture systems, and most recently, untethered open ocean 'drifter pens': the Velella project. Sims also co-founded Kona Blue Water Farms in 2001, applying cutting-edge hatchery technologies to 'difficult-to-rear' marine fish larvae: snappers, groupers, and yellowtail/jacks.
The 4th Offshore Mariculture Conference will be held in Izmir, Turkey on 17-19 October 2012 and will bring industry professionals together to network, discuss topical issues and exchange information and ideas on the business of offshore fish farming. Following two days of technical presentations and discussion, delegates will also have the opportunity to visit an offshore fish farm.
The specific focus on Turkey is expected to attract Government officials from farming nations looking to learn how they can adapt Turkey's successful spatial planning policy into their own Ministries of Fisheries/Environment and Tourism. In addition international farming companies and suppliers looking to enter and/or invest in the Turkish market are expected to attend. The Conference is supported by the Republic of Turkey Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Livestock, the Central Union of Turkish Aquaculture Producers as well as the European Aquaculture Society, the European Technology and Innovation Platform and the Federation of European Aquaculture Producers.
The soon to be released programme will include sessions on:
- Environmental impacts: measuring, modeling and policy implications for offshore mariculture
- Innovative Technologies
- Management and husbandry:
- Doing business offshore
- Overview of the latest developments in aquaculture: Growing the wealth of aquaculture - perspectives and potential
