Dear Valued Subscriber

We have just reached home from Victam Asia 2012 in Bangkok, Thailand. It's been a very exciting week and what a successful event!! I would like to congratulate the organiser for their hard work. The new location at BITEC meant it was much bigger with a lot more visitors and many new exhibitors. Perendale Publishers Limited organised the GRAPAS Conference which attracted 120 delegates over the course of the first day.

Our stand itself was constantly busy with visitors, mostly readers and potential readers, some potential advertisers and event other event organisers. Our stand was opposite our magazine's former editor who now publishers under aquafeed.com which should not be confused with the original aquafeed.co.uk. We paid a courtesy call to all our current clients showing at the exhibition. We also met several potential contributors as well. We werre very please to be there and this is one very successful event.

We are co-organising the important BioMarine Business Convention at Fishmonger Hall, London. If you would like to have more information please get in touch or visit www.biomarine.org.

We have sent out our January 2012 edition to all our subscribers, if you have not received or would like to give some constructive feedback please drop me an email. Below, we have many exciting current industry and event news. Follow our Aquaculturists blog and our portal for your up-to-date news. If you would like us to publish your events and press releases please do not hesitate to get in touch.

Sincerely

Tuti Tan

Councillor calls for more aquaculture programs in the Philippines

A local Councillor in the Philippines, has called for more action by saying that city agriculture office should upgrade its aquaculture program to include raising siganid (malaga), grouper (lapu-lapu) and other species to augment the income of the fisher folks. The issue surfaced after several fisher folks from Barangay Calmay manifested their experiences after their fish pens and other fishing structures were demolished more than a year ago to clear the city's rivers for dredging.

Guardsman Group looking to move into aquaculture

Guardsman Group has added a 500-acre property to its leaseholdings, which is being considered primarily for further diversification of the company into aquaculture, director of finance Vinay Walia said Monday. The company is looking at ornamental fish, instead of the farming of tilapia which has met with mixed fortunes in recent years.

Locals opposed to new proposed €5.5m salmon farm

Marine Harvest applied to the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine for aquaculture and foreshore licences for the site at Shot Head. The firm says the development is part of a €14 million (US$18.42 million) plan by Marine Harvest Ireland to upgrade 16 aquaculture sites over the next five years. However, objections to the plan are growing and a public meeting is due to be held at Adrigole Community Centre tomorrow night.

In our NEXT issue ...

Coming up in the March | April 2012 issue of the magazine

Filtration in recirculation particle control:
You need to produce your fish with some advantages when comparing your product to the market in general, that is, if you want to be successful. Recirculation is a technology in growth and a major factor in economic production and as an overall control of particles.

Fish Protein Hydrolysates
- FPH- enhance resistance of aquaculture species to different types of stress

Aquaculture production is now exceeding fisheries production in total seafood supply. Aquaculture, through intensification and husbandry practices, generate numerous stressful events, which may result from water deterioration (acute or chronic exposure to reduced levels of dissolved oxygen and/or increased levels of carbon dioxide, ammonia, nitrite) and/or handling (vaccination, transfer, transport, grading, ambient noise).

The Quest To Keep Salmon In The Pink Naturally:

The colour of farmed salmon has attracted so much attention within the aquaculture industry as it can be appreciated that the typical pink-reddish colour of salmon is symbolic of quality and value, with retailers demanding stringent criteria for farmed fish such as Atlantic salmon and trout to meet consumer expectations.

Regional review on status and trends - Aquaculture development in Sub-Saharan Africa:

FAO regularly conducts global and regional reviews of aquaculture status and trends, most recently during 2008 and 2009.

Exploration of fresh water prawn feed industry of Bangladesh:
Bangladesh is endowed with vast water areas in the form of ponds, dighis, lakes, streams, and rivers, coastal areas, natural depressions and estuaries covering an area of 4.56 million ha (DoF, 2011), etc where fish can be cultured profitably.

Industry Event News

AQUA 2012: Science responds to industry needs

As with all the events organised by the European and World Aquaculture Societies, our AQUA 2012 event in Prague in September will focus on how science plays a fundamental role in the development of the global aquaculture industry.

The AQUA 2012 theme, Global Aquaculture: Securing Our Future, has obvious implications in global and regional food security and aquaculture trade, placing aquaculture products in the global fisheries market. It also refers to economic and environmental sustainability and the image of aquaculture activities. The event will be a truly global one, including technical sessions that cover farmed fish, shellfish, algal and crustacean species from all climatic zones and all continents.
Many industry initiatives are also being planned, included Farmers' Days, a Percid fish culture workshop and other workshops that link the scientific conference to the international trade exhibition. Trade show booths are selling very well, but are also still available.
Abstracts are still being accepted for the vast array of topics that are encompassed by the numerous sessions.
