International Milling Directory
Newsletter - November 2010
Dear Valued Subscriber

Welcome to the November E-Newsletter from The International Milling Directory. This month the IMD team have been busy gathering information for the equipment guides that will appear in the 2011/12 20th Anniversary edition of the International Milling Directory. Companies wanting to include a Guide in the 2011/12 Directory, should contact Sabby Major as soon as possible to make sure their Guide is included.

The team have been attending this week's Eurotier in Hannover, Germany. They had a great opportunity to not only distribute the IMD to feed and food millers and others interested in milling, but to talk to companies who should have their products registered. We are pleased to report some very positive feedback about the IMD and the usefulness of the website.

We would like to thank the Eurotier organisers for putting on a great event that this year embraced the feed industry fully - we are already looking forward to the next event in 2012.

Sincerely
Tuti Tan

Industry news

Farmers' Group capitalises on export opportunities for quality East Anglian wheat

Wheat from farms throughout East Anglia is being exported in increasing quantities through the Port of Ipswich in Suffolk as a direct result of the recent alliance between the Suffolk-based AtlasFram Group, the UK's leading farmer-owned farm inputs purchasing and grain marketing business, and ADM Direct, a wholly-owned division of Archer Daniels Midland (UK) Ltd.

The first consignment, 3500 tonnes of Group 4 feed wheat for shipment to mainland Europe, was loaded aboard the M V Rig at the Port of Ipswich in August, while this year's crop was still being harvested. This has been followed by a further four shipments, 4000 tonnes of biscuit wheat, two 1500-tonne boat loads of Group 1 bread wheat which were destined for The Netherlands and a further 3000 tonnes of Group 1 wheat which went to an ADM mill at Edinburgh in Scotland. In the run-up to Christmas, two further 1500-tonne shipments of bread-making wheat will be exported to The Netherlands.

Barry Howard, ADM direct trader responsible for the AtlasFram grain marketing, says that there is continuing strong demand from the continent for good quality UK-produced wheat. He comments:
Traditionally, farmers in France and Germany are major producers of milling-type wheats and generate a significant exportable surplus. However, adverse weather conditions in large parts of mainland Europe before and during this year's harvest have been reflected in lower production and reduced quality, with much of the crop in those countries being downgraded to feed and retained for domestic use. This has significantly reduced the tonnage of quality wheat coming onto the export market from these sources, and the situation has been exacerbated by the tightening of supplies from other traditional exporters such as Russia and those bordering the Black Sea.

Darrell Yarwood, trading manager for ADM Direct says, ìThe UK was fortunate to escape the worst of the weather that affected many parts of Europe. Most farmers managed to harvest their higher-grade wheats before the quality deteriorated which has allowed us to step in to supply markets such as The Netherlands and Scotland that would traditionally have drawn supplies of quality wheat from other European countries. The high level of demand for wheat has meant that, in some cases, crops which would normally have been used to produce animal feed have been upgraded to biscuit grade, which has added a premium to feed values, thereby boosting supplying AtlasFram Members' returns.

A key to these export consignments is the alliance, which AtlasFram recently formed with ADM Direct. ADM is a strong marketing partner and itself part of a company with a global presence, giving AtlasFram Members access to a much greater range of markets, which are becoming increasingly important. While AtlasFram Members deal directly with their own in-house Marketing Department and enjoy independent, unbiased advice, they also benefit from access to ADM's comprehensive market information, together with the support of its highly-experienced marketing and logistics specialists. The agreement further improves the scope and quality of marketing services which AtlasFram offers to members, the range of markets to which they have access and, ultimately, improves returns to those who use the marketing department.

Binmaster introduces extended rotary for high level detection
BinMaster level controls has introduced a series of extended rotaries for top-of-bin mounting when the rotary is used as a high level alarm. These vertically extended rotaries are desirable as solid material will tend to be higher at the filling point and operators want to prevent filling the bin to the very top and allow for a specified amount of headroom in the bin. For top-of-bin applications, Bin-Master custom manufactures extended rotaries to the length requested by the customer, offering custom lengths up to 144.

BinMaster builds a better rotary because we listen to our customers, stated Todd Peterson, BinMaster's vice-president of sales. The vertically extended rotary was developed for customers who wanted a specific amount of headroom and to stop filling when material reached that level. Since we manufacture here in Nebraska and have in-house custom CNC machining on site, BinMaster can offer more flexibility when customers come to us with specific requirements.

BinMaster rotaries are a proven, long-lasting solution for level detection in bins, tanks and silos. The BMRX and MAXIMA+ genuine fail-safe rotaries feature a durable motor with de-energized operation that shuts down the motor when material is present to reduce wear and the operating temperature to prolong motor life. The extended rotary can be equipped from a wide selection of three-vane, two-vane, collapsible, insertable, and bayonet-style paddles. BinMaster rotaries are designed and manufactured in BinMaster's ISO 9001:2008 certified facility in Lincoln, Nebraska, USA.
