Recognized as a national leader in workforce development, Community Foundation of Greater South Wood County (CFGSWC) in Wisconsin Rapids is encouraging regional collaboration, supporting comprehensive approaches and leveraging local philanthropy and public workforce resources to invest in creating innovative workforce solutions.
"Participation in the National Fund for Workforce Solutions - as one of two rural sites in the nation- is consistent with our efforts to recreate the economy and strengthen community development strategies," said Kelly Lucas CEO and President of the South Wood County Community Foundation. "The Community Foundation plays a vital convening role in our region and "Workforce Central" provides an effective platform through which philanthropy, employers, community organizations and residents can directly impact our future economic prosperity."
In 2008, the Community Foundation created Workforce Central, a community-based, grantmaking partnership promoting a skilled and productive workforce across Central Wisconsin.
Workforce Central is one of the first rural sites partnering with the National Fund for Workforce Solutions, a nationwide project which provides financial support as well as national workforce expertise and technical assistance. National Fund for Workforce Solutions is promoting change at three levels-individual, institution, and system-leading to better jobs, better workers, and a better workforce development system.
Beginning in 2008, CFGSWC brought together eleven local foundations contributing $1.2 million to match the national fund. Beyond contributing dollars, the funders are increasing their knowledge of workforce and economic development issues. Private resources are ensuring the economic and social future of the community through investing in strategies that impact both workers and employers.
In addition to the funders collaborative, the Community Foundation has convened stakeholders in an advisory council. CFGSWC encourages an inclusive process by joining together 20 leaders on the Workforce Central Advisors meeting monthly to develop shared values, vision and an action plan for the region. Members of the Advisors range from public and private sector experts in adult education and training, social services, career development, economic development, labor, and faith-based perspective.
"The Community Foundation is well-positioned to use its influence to bring together key stakeholders for a new approach to workforce development," explains Vickie Lock, Associate Dean General Education for Mid-State Technical College and member of the advisory council. "As a partner, we value CFGSWC's ability to foster a holistic approach and incorporate diverse points of view around these challenging issues by allowing members to share information, find gaps in the services we provide, and not duplicate efforts."
CFGSWC has promoted its efforts locally, at the state level, and nationally. Lucas has been meeting with the White House's Office of Recovery to discuss the issues and needs of rural communities and the role of philanthropy.
