Aid to Artisan Update

Vessels of MozambiqueAs you know, Faux Time Design donates a portion of its profits to Aid to Artisans (ATA), a non-profit group that creates economic opportunities for artisan groups around the world where livelihoods, communities, and craft traditions are marginal or at risk.

Did you know you can shop the online ATA store and find some amazing home decor items?  Go to the online store at http://www.atawebstore.org/home and click on 'Global Handmade.'  One of my favorite finds are the Vessels from Mozambique.

We make watching paint dry a whole lot more interesting then watching grass grow!

Project Spotlight: 'Piece de Resistance'

25' Foyer Ceiling

Still think of Debbie GIbson music when you hear Faux Finishing?

Think 2,500 sheets of gold, copper and midnight celestrial leaf, several rolls of hand designed metallic foils, and dozens of buckets of custom tinted plasters and glazes.  Go ahead, add Swarovski crystals, 250 of them.  This is not only in your dreams, this is a magnificent 25 foot barrel ceiling for this foyer.  Truly a piece de resistance.  We took five custom ceilings and turned them into a works of befitting royalty.

The intricate design was inspired by a spectacular chandelier that measured almost 7' in diameter.  We began the transformation by troweling a layer of a metallic architectural coating over the entire ceiling to create a metallic sheen that added a sophisticated sheen.  Following, we installed a custom designed decorative masking pattern and gilded the pattern with five different leafs, including a unique and (we discovered) a difficult leaf to acquire (but never impossible) midnight celestial.  The design was finally complete with the embellishment of more than 80 Swarovski crystals the size of a quarter.  Especially unique to us about this project, how each layer possessed it's own beauty and evolved for the entire six weeks on the project.

Dining Room Ceiling
The foyer just wets your appetite for the dining room ceiling.   We used 1,000 leaves of gold to create a stunning border on the dining room ceiling and created a unique design that flanked both of the stunning chandeliers.  The ceiling design was finished using a technique called Pietre Dure that created the look of inlaid marble.  The perfect ending touch was adding another 200 Swarovski crystals to give it just the right shimmer!

My Favorite Painting and Design Apps

Ok, most of you know I am a bit of a tech nut.I keep my iPhone in my workbelt and have Appsrarely been seen without my Bluetooth.  I challenge you to find a photo.  And now, with my handy dandy iPad, I often begin the design process onsite and can make changes to my renderings with the client and designer instantaneously.  Love it!  And don't get me started about blogging, tweeting and Facebook -- if you aren't following us -- well, then you are missing so much more than watching paint dry!

So, I thought I would share some of my favorite design and painting apps.  Trying to decide on a paint color?  Download Benjamin Moore's Color Capture App or Sherwin Williams Color Snap App.  Using your iPhone, Android or Blackberry, you snap a picture of a color that catches your eye and then instantly find its match, view photo inspirations, and explore an entire spectrum of colors.  Easy and fantastic!

Looking for ideas on room layout?  Try the Mark On Call App.  Great for room layout planning, material and shopping list creation and a quick idea guide in the tip of your hand.

And finally, one of my absolute FAVORITE apps of all time -- iHandy Carpenter.  Perfect app if you are trying to hang a picture just can't get it level.

Send me your favorite apps and I will post on my Facebook, blog and tweet.  Drop me an email at angela@fauxtimedesign.com or visit our Facebook page or Blog.
