PAINTING TO SELL

The signs of the times are here.  Everywhere you look someone is putting another 'For Sale' sign on their lawn.  So when you are considering selling, how do you differentiate your home from the pack and position your home to get the best deal?  Simple - PAINT!

Everyone wants "move in ready" and nothing says turn key like a wall with neutral beige with a subtle glaze to the molding to keep your home from looking like a "builder's special."

Next, time to pull down that dated wallpaper.  This is one of the biggest decor obstacles in trying to sell a home.  Flat paint looks to drab in the space?  Let us apply a classic Strie finish in off white.  It will not only show fresh and clean, but it will elongate the walls and create the illusion of taller ceilings.

And speaking of ceilings, how can your compete with new homes boasting 9' - 12' ceilings?  Add height simply by painting the ceiling the same color as the walls or just a couple of shades lighter.

A collective sigh is heard out loud as Spring is here.  While traditionally, this season is met with optimistic homeowners looking to upgrade and move to a bigger house,  it isn't as viable an option these days.

However, Spring is a great time to spiff up your walls and ceilings with faux and decorative painting.  Families are doing more entertaining at home and with finishes in all price ranges, we can help your house look it's best, without breaking the bank.  See below how clients are doing just that in "Investing in the Nest"

CABIN FEVER - CURED!

For those of you who have followed our online newsletter the past couple of years, you know how much we enjoy working on 'theme' rooms.  We recently completed a beauty we dubbed, 'The Adirondack Room.'   Another great example of watching a client's vision come to fruition

Adirondack Room - windowsIt all began with a love for the great outdoors. Our client completed a huge addition over their garage just a year earlier and now wanted to complete the transformation by creating a fun and relaxed space for her three boys to just 'hang out.'  Earlier in the project she commissioned a custom woodworker to add paneling, built in bookcases and 20' beams.  The beams were distressed and antiqued with stain, chisels and a few hammers and chains.  Yet, the room still 'missed the mark.'  That's when our phone rang.

ceilingWhen I first looked at the room, I saw large patches of white ceiling between the beautiful beams and crisp white trim and closet doors -- hardly a log cabin feel.  I knew exactly what we needed to do -- the space need to be warmed up while adding texture and dimension.

We began by applying a Sandstone finish on the ceiling.  Sandstone is a decorating plaster that creates a "sandy" texture that can be scraped or sanded to bring out the embedded textures hidden within.  Once the Sandstone was applied we custom tinted a glaze with yellow ochre and brown and applied an overglaze coat.  The result really brought out the beauty in the beams.

Next, we tackled the six panel closet door.  We used a trompe l'oeil technique on the doors to create the look of an old salvaged barn door -- complete with cross boards and several layers of 'peeling paint.'  We applied the same finish on the moldings of the seven large windows.

While our slogan may be 'transforming walls into works of art,' perhaps this time it was really "From Rompus to Rustic!"

INVESTING IN THE NEST

There is no better time than now to 'invest in the nest.'   Just like smart investors are buying stocks at an all time low, now is a perfect time to invest in classic and timeless decor that will pay dividends immediately and in the long term.

How?

Choose Venetian Plaster in a subtle tone for your entry or foyer.  Venetian Plaster is a unique plaster with particles of marble dust and limestone incorporated in it.

VP Kitchen
Venetian Plaster creates an elegant look for just about any wall and has lasted through the centuries, and weathered the ravages of time and the elements very well.

Decorative wood finishing (faux bois) is one of the best options for customizing your home and really transforming it into something truly warm and personal.  Everything from trim, floors, cabinetry, chair rails, ceilings and furniture can receive a high end wood grain finish at a fraction of the cost of replacing with real mahogany, fruitwood, cedar, and bird's eye (to name a few).

Faux BoisIn a home we recently completed, the builder framed the entire library in a rich Brazilian mahogany, yet forgot about the pocket doors.  We created a perfect matched wood grain finish and sealed it with several coats of a gloss varnish.  The difference was imperceptible.

Demand more from your molding, trim and floors.  Over the past few years we have noticed builders adding a lot of molding in the new construction homes.  It can be beautiful, yet at times, overwhelming!  What to do?  Add an antique glaze to the molding or a pearlescent metallic coat to really give it a hint of glam!  Or, better yet, add a faux fabric damask in the center of the panels.  These looks are synonymous with timeless elegance.
