Transforming your walls into works of art is our motto at Faux Time Design, however I would be remiss if I didn't mention a wonderful opportunity to purchase fine art (to cover those walls that have not been fauxed, of course).  Don't miss the 2009 International Art Expo at the Jacob Javits Center in NYC.  It is a great venue to purchase fine art and collectibles.

Greetings!

It's been a busy and exciting start to the year for us.  Times may prove tenuous, especially for major changes in your home, however a little sprucing may be all your home needs.  It allows you to see everything in a different light.  See our newsletter for lots of inspirational ideas.

We want to send a special thank you to everyone who stopped by our open house in January.  It was a wonderful success!  The prevalent comment from clients, designers and even our friends was "I never knew this was faux finishing."  No matter how many times we explain that faux finishing is not the coral sponging from 1992, seeing is definitely believing.  Shimmering plasters and textured finishes providing incredible depth and warmth were among the most popular at our event.  If you were unable to attend, please let us know and we will be happy to bring our open house to your home.

HOME THEATRE DESERVES AN OSCAR!

Trompe l'oeil (pronounced tromp loy) means, literally, "fool the eye" and describes painted objects and scenes that look so authentic; one must reach out to touch them to make certain that they are actually there. Media Room Full ScreenAs artisans, we find trompe l'oeil to be the most difficult and the most rewarding art.  Not only are we challenged with creating a sense of something existing in space that does not, but we must also consider the use of light and shadows to complete the illusion.

We recently finished a theatre room with both trompe l'oeil drapery and suede panels.  We were commissioned to take an extra bedroom and turn it into a home theatre unlike no other.  It was a true collaborative effort with our client.

We began by rendering red antique leather finish on all the walls to create the dramatic atmosphere.TL Drapes  Then Jill worked her magic and rendered gorgeous crimson red draperies that created a beautiful frame to the large media screen.  To top it off, she even applied real tassels to make the illusion complete.  Over the antique leather finish, I rendered large faux suede panels with a trompe l'oeil gold patina frame.  The frames were designed with exact measurements to allow our client to display her collection of movie posters.  The client was overwhelmed with the final product.

TL PanelsNot sure where to begin your own project?  Don't let a real estate floor plan dictate your space --- think outside of the box and let's take it to a whole new level!

NO MORE WHITE CEILINGS!

DS half bath 1While there are no hard and fast rules about painting your ceiling,  we must declare that in 2009 everyone must stop painting their ceilings white!  The "Fifth Wall' (as we like to call it), provides another opportunity for design and beauty with an element of surprise.

DP Coffer CeilingNot sure where to start?  Look at a basic color card.  Let your fingers do the walking two steps down.  Keeping the ceilings within the same color range will actually elongate your vertical walls and create the illusion of a higher ceiling.  Tempted by a darker color?  Don't be scared.  Use the depth of a darker hue to create a theatrical look, especially on vaulted ceilings.  A warm gold or hand painted stencil finish will help to create a stunning masterpiece and make your room sing.  It's time to go from flat to fabulous!
