DBI Annual Meeting & Awards Ceremony  Tuesday, March 9

The Downtown Annual Meeting and Awards Ceremony will be held Tuesday, March 9 beginning at 4 PM at the Bloomington/Monroe County Convention Center.

Bill and Gayle Cook will be presented with the Downtown Bloomington Leadership Award in recognition of their vision and commitment to downtown Bloomington.  Downtown revitalization began with a handshake between Mr. Cook and former Mayor Frank McCloskey in a plan to restore the Graham Plaza and the City to construct the Regester Parking Garage in 1979.  This initial project mobilized the community to continue focus on downtown investment in building restorations, new construction, special events and downtown design amenities for 30 over years. The Cook's continue to be involved both personally and financially with downtown Bloomington.  Their attention to quality and detail in landscaping, building development and maintenance, special events and promotion as well as involvement with issues has helped transform downtown Bloomington.

Additional awards will be presented based on the National Trust for Historic Preservation's Main Street Approach in Design, Economic Restructuring, Promotion and Organization.   Also featured will be a Silent Auction and Downtown Latest Projects Showcase.

Please join us for the DBI Annual Meeting & Awards Ceremony on Tuesday, March 9, 4 - 7PM at the Bloomington/Monroe County Convention Center.  The event is free and the public is welcome to attend.  RSVP by March 5 to info@downtownbloomington or call 812.336.3681.

Winter Farmers Market, Saturday, March 6

March comes in like a lion, this Saturday morning at Bloomington Winter Farmers Market, which continues on Saturday 9-12 a.m. at Harmony School.

With Spring fast approaching, our local farmers will be bringing to market an increasing variety of early crops including basil, lettuces, spinach, broccoli, cauliflower, butternut squash, turnips, beets, radishes, carrots, potatoes, kale, and many other types of greens.

Also available will be a wide array of local meats from Fiedler and Schacht Farms, Phoenix Farms tofu, farm fresh eggs, cheeses and yogurt (Traderspoint's Raspberry is back!), and gourmet locally roasted coffee.  And, time to start your garden with locally grown heirloom seeds from Red Rosa Farm!

Two musical performances will entertain at the market all morning: Gan Ainm(9:00-10:30), and Two Tones (10:30-12:00), thanks to generous support from the Bloomington Community Arts Commission and the City of Bloomington; Bloom Magazine; and Friends of the Bloomington WinterFarmers Market.
Don't worry that the increased popularity of the market will mean parking difficulties -- ample free parking is available at Harmony School (902 E. Second Street ), on surrounding streets, and at the nearby Atwater parking garage.
Downtown Bloomington Inc. Partners with the U.S. Census Bureau to Support the 2010 Census

The 2010 Census is approaching and Downtown Bloomington Inc. is proud to partner with the U.S. Census Bureau to help achieve a complete and accurate count of our population. Every person living in the United States must be counted in the 2010 Census - including people of all ages, races, ethnic groups, citizens and noncitizens. As part of our partnership with the Census Bureau, we will provide employees, customers, business and industry partners, and others in our community with information on the 2010 Census. Our goal is to help individuals in our community and beyond to understand the importance of the census, and encourage people to complete and return their 2010 Census forms.

Census data are vital to our company and our communities. The data collected in the census directly affect how more than $400 billion in federal funding is distributed annually to state, local and tribal governments - including our community. In fact, census data help guide local planning decisions, such as where to provide additional social services, build new roads, hospitals and schools, and where to locate job-training centers. For businesses, census data are critical to help companies make strategic and fiscally sound decisions that can spur and sustain economic development and growth. Specifically, census data can help businesses to:

·Make informed business decisions, from marketing and capital spending to merchandising and work-force decisions.
·Understand customers' demographics and needs in order to best tailor products and services.
·Select business, store or facility locations.
·Make long-term and forward-looking business decisions.

How you can help:

As an important member of our organization, we ask for your assistance in this important initiative.  We encourage you to let your family, friends, neighbors, business associates, industry contacts and others know that:

·The census is easy. One of the shortest census forms in history, the 2010 Census form asks 10 questions and takes about 10 minutes to complete.

·The census is important. Census data guide decisions that can help improve services to our community, including schools, hospitals, housing, roads and more.

·The census is safe. By law, the Census Bureau cannot share respondents' answers with anyone, including other federal agencies and law enforcement entities.

Everyone needs to be counted. Throughout the coming months, we'll continue to share information with you on the 2010 Census and our partnership with the Census Bureau, as well as other census-related news and activities in our company and community. Watch for additional details or visit 2010census.gov to learn more.
