Welcome Back Hylant Group |
"The best view downtown" says Mark Dilts of Hylant Group. When Hylant Group needed to expand five years ago, there were few options. They had been downtown as the Joe Dial Insurance Company since the early seventies. But over the years their staff and operation had grown and needed additional office space and parking options. They moved to the west side of town for five years but now are back. CFC Inc. purchased the Chase Building last year and contacted Hylant Group with their plans for renovation of the space into Class A office space. Mark was excited to share the idea of moving back downtown with his staff. It was an overwhelming consensus to move back with new, professional office space. They missed the people and energy of downtown. "It is fun and healthy, we are thrilled to be back downtown", stated Mark Dilts, Hylant Group. "Plus the conference room offers the best view of downtown overlooking the Courthouse square". |

The BPP gets a Face Lift
 |
The Bloomington Playwrights Project at 107 W. 9th St., the northernmost gateway to the recently established Bloomington Entertainment and Arts District (BEAD), is getting a face lift. Local artist Laura Brikmanis has repainted the building's exterior with a new mural that captures the essence of the theater. "We were thinking about doing something to improve the exterior of the building for a long time," says BPP Artistic Director Richard Perez. "When BPP Ensemble member Michael Carey approached us with an idea to repaint the building, we decided to put together a proposal for the city." Miah Michaelsen, Assistant Economic Development Director for the Arts, worked with the BPP to meet city code standards of signage. Ultimately, the work was supported through a grant from the Bloomington Entertainment and Arts District (BEAD). "The Bloomington Playwrights Project is one of BEAD's anchor arts organizations and their theatre, on the northernmost boundary of the District, serves as an important gateway", says Michaelsen. "Their offer to partner with a local artist to create a building-size mural which would not only be visually dynamic but also draw visitors to the theatre was a project that BEAD was pleased to support." Artist Laura Brikmanis was brought on to design the mural after Carey saw some of her other work, including the small mural outside Bear's Place on 3rd St. "I came up with two different designs and after talking to Board and Staff we decided on a lighting and scaffolding motif," explains Brikmanis. "I got the idea from a cartoon. It was so simple and colorful and conveyed the idea of the space within." "I wanted to compliment the mission by 'spotlighting' local artists and new plays." The BPP will host an "unveiling" celebration at the theater on Friday, September 5 from 4 - 6pm. The event is open to the general public, which is invited to view the finished work and meet the artist over light refreshments. This project was supported through a generous grant from The City of Bloomington and the Bloomington Entertainment and Arts District. Funny Bone Bloomington opens September 25
The Funny Bone Bloomington launches September 25. The opening night show will be a fundraiser for the Hoosier Hills Food Bank.
The club's first headliner will be famed "voicestrumentalist" Michael Winslow, who performs through September 27. Emceeing the opening-night fundraiser will be Bloomington Mayor Mark Kruzan.
The new Funny Bone is associated with a Midwest-based group of comedy clubs of the same name. "We thought Bloomington was overdue for a club devoted to just comedy," said Bloomington resident Jared Thompson, who is launching the club with his wife Dayna.
The Funny Bone Bloomington will be serving food items from the menu of The Trojan Horse, the restaurant just up the block. "We're thrilled to be partnering with one of Bloomington's longest standing culinary traditions," said Thompson.
The Funny Bone Bloomington will be open daily except Mondays, at the corner of Fourth and Walnut Sts., just one block south of the Courthouse Square downtown.
The new comedy club is on the second floor of the Knights of Columbus Building, above The Cinemat video rental store and screening room.
While alcohol will be served, the design of the club will allow the Funny Bone to admit patrons 18 and over.
Advance tickets go on sale beginning September 16 and can be purchased at funnybonebtown.com, through The Cinemat box office or by calling (812) 336-LAFF. | |
