Level I Catechesis Course
Beginning in October

All Saints' Youth and Children's Formation Committee is pleased to announce that a course for the first level of Catechesis of the Good Shepherd, focusing on the program for children 3 to 6 years old, will begin on October 5th.  This course is offered in collaboration with St Thomas the Apostle Roman Catholic Church in Hyde Park.   Course meetings will alternate between the two sites.  The course is open to anyone who is interested in learning more about the religious nature of young children and the methodology used by the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd to meet these needs.

The Catechesis of the Good Shepherd, grounded in scriptural and liturgical study, is framed by Maria Montessori's principles of education. Children hear the Gospel by working with simple, sensorial materials, keyed to scriptural and liturgical moments.

Beginning in 1954, Sofia Cavalletti, a Hebrew and scripture scholar and member of the Vatican commission for Jewish-Christian relations, and her colleague, Professor Gianna Gobbi, a Montessori trained educator, developed the Catechesis by observing and working with children at the Children's Centre in Rome, Italy.

To learn more about this program and the course being offered please contact Polly Tangora, polly@allsaintschicago.com, or Andrea Garland,  agarland@ameritech.net.

Update from Mexico
Reflections from Jim Hanna

After the service, the congregation processed through the neighborhood, led by musicians and waving banners.  Upon return, there was a band in the sanctuary which played until it was time for a meal with a caring, generous community. This would be a typical evening at All Saints'; but I was in the community of Santa Maria Vergen in Xalapa, Mexico.

During this trip, I have been struck by the similarities between Santa Maria and and an All Saints' from the not-too-distant past.  Padre Byron takes the role of Bonnie with his passion for the growth of his community; Dona Mari and Ana Maria are Santa Maria's versions of Norma and Bea; Rodolfo, Jonathan and others are young, driven leaders assuring the future success of the church.

Sunday was the Feast of Santa Maria, one of the highlights of the church year.  Bishop Benito from the Diocese of Southwest Mexico led the service before a full house in the colorfully decorated church.  During the service, he took time to bless the 44th wedding anniversary of Dave and Karen Howe.  Two slaughtered pigs had occupied part of the kitchen during the weekend; they were prepared for the meal for the maybe 70 guests attending.   As is the frequent case, a band played during and after the feast ("you'll have the time, the time of your life, this man danced with the Bishop's wife!").  And throughout, conversation in my newly accomplished Spanglish with new friends.

An amazing journey!  I'm truly confident that Santa Maria is succeeding and will continue to prosper because of the strength of its community.  I invite members of the All Saints' community to join us next year and experience the what is going on in Mexico.  I've already started to put the squeeze on my Anthropology majoring son, as the area is a showcase for early American history.  I look forward to chatting about what this week has been like.  Traveling with the Howes is a unique experience!
