Dear Friends,
I am happy to announce that this Sunday, All Saints' very own Jeanne Wirpsa will be our guest preacher. Jeanne is a board certified chaplain commissioned by the National Episcopal Church. For over 20 years, she has ministered to people with HIV/AIDS, children, hospice patients, and patients with life-threatening cancers. She currently serves at Northwestern Memorial Hospital.
Dent Davidson will also be with us this Sunday as our guest musician. Dent is the Associate for Liturgy and the Arts for the Episcopal Diocese of Chicago. He has been a professional church musician since his teens and he holds a degree in composition and vocal Jazz. You may recall that Dent was with us for Holy Week and Easter, and he is amazing!
Dent brings with him an extra special invitation: if you would like to help participate in Sunday's music, please show up 20 minutes before either service (we'll meet in the Parish Hall before the 9). We'll have a variety of percussion instruments you can use to help enliven our opening hymn. It's designed so anyone can join in, regardless of musical background - you don't even have to be a singer! Email Andrew (andrew@allsaintschicago.org) if you plan to join us, or just show up - all are welcome!
In addition to all of this talent, we have guest vocalist Jessie Oliver joining us. Jessie is a friend of Andrew Freeman's, and a talented opera singer who has been with us before. This is a Sunday not to be missed!
I want to thank everyone who participated in the memorial service for Steve Pike's son this past Thursday. So many of you stepped up to the plate to help out with the reception, the service, and in providing support and welcome to Steve's family. Thank you for your presence and all of your help. This was Christian community at it's very finest. Please continue to keep Steve and his family in your prayers.
This Saturday is Mobile Pantry at the Ravenswood School parking lot (4332 N. Paulina). Volunteers of all ages are welcome!
I will see all of you on Sunday!
Blessings,
Fran

Padre Byron making a presentation
|
While in Xalapa with our friends from Santa
Maria Virgen, we participated in daily meetings with Padre Byron, the Bishop's Committee (Vestry), and the community, learning more about the current state of the church, their needs and challenges. We also made a presentation about the history and mission of All Saints. In addition to Eucharist and Evening Prayer in the church, we attended, and were much impressed by, several prayer circles in homes of church members.
Of course, we have been well fed. Mexicans are well known for their hospitality! Great tamales, gorditas, mole, tortillas, and beans. The diet begins when we get back to Chicago!

Colonia Veracruz holding "our" prayer books that Padre Byron had lugged up the hillside in his backpack.

Particularly interesting was our visit to La Colonia Veracruz, a very poor neighborhood on the edge of Xalapa, reached by a dusty/muddy path up a steep hill. Padre Byron is in the first stages of establishing a mission here. Around an altar set behind a house, about 20 people, including a number of little boys, Padre Byron offered Evening Prayer and we all shared in a thoughtful discussion of the lesson. Afterwards we enjoyed the tamales we had brought (made by the mother-in-law of a Santa María vestry member), and the children attacked a rather amazing piñata of The Incredible Hulk. We will meet Jim Hanna in Mexico City in a few days to return to Xalapa for additional discussion, hospitality and the very special annual celebration in honor of Saint Mary.
