All Saints' Episcopal Church
News for the Week of July 1, 2012
Dear Friends,

So it appears that summer is here.  The Rev. Mote Magomba will be with us this Sunday as our guest preacher.  Please join me in welcoming Mote.  We'll have time for conversation with him in between the 9 and 11 o'clock worship services.  We'll also be hosting a birthday bar-b-que for him in my backyard on Monday, July 2nd.  Please let me know if you and your family will be attending.

On Tuesday I'll depart for 11 days in Indianapolis at the Episcopal Church's General Convention.  Every three years bishops, lay people and clergy representing every diocese gather to pray and discern the course of our church for the next three years.  I am honored to be one of 8 deputies from our diocese.  Part legislation, part Bible study, part summer camp: General Convention is one of my most favorite aspects of our Episcopal tradition.  Laity, clergy and bishops all have voices and no proposed piece of legislation can be part of our official belief system without passing in both the house of deputies (made up of four clergy people and four lay people from every diocese) and the house of bishops (made up of all active and retired bishops).  It is a sight to behold and a divinely inspired incarnation of Robert's Rules of Order.

It is my hope that we will pass legislation that: enables transgendered people to enter into the ordination process without undue prejudice and that we will also pass legislation that provides for an official rite for blessings for people in same-sex relationships.  Our friend Mote will be speaking at the convention and offering his perspective on the full-inclusion of LGBT people.

In addition we will be wrestling with issues of structure and governance.  No doubt the issues relating to sex and sexuality will receive more attention from the press than issues of governance, but both are important.

I'll be back on Friday, July 13.  I'll be in church on July 15 and taking our acolytes to Great America on the 16th of July.  On the 17th of July I hope to start my summer vacation.

Hope to see you all this Sunday.

Blessings,

Bonnie

The Wheel of Awesome Returns!
Now accepting discussion topic ideas

Want a wonderful evening under the stars with (always) scintillating and (mostly) theologically reflective conversation? Then come join us for our second annual "Summer Salons," starting Wednesday July 11 and continuing every Wednesday until August 15.

We'll meet on the front lawn of the Church (weather permitting) at 7pm.  Bring a lawn chair (if you don't want to sit on the grass or in our beautiful yellow folding chairs) and a snack/refreshment to share (although, some will be provided).  Childcare will also be available.

We will spin the "Wheel of Awesome" for a topic that we will discuss for about an hour and a half.

In preparation for this, we need your help in coming up with interesting theologically/morally/religiously-based topics.  Examples of a past topic were "Bad girls of the Bible" and "Consumerism and morality."  Please submit your ideas to Mike Mattson at mhjmchi@aol.com.

Thanks, and we hope to see you on Wednesday night!
