Dear Friends,

It's Pet Blessing Sunday!!  Bring your furry, finned, winged,  and scaly companions to either the 9 or 11 o'clock worship services this Sunday.  Also invite your friends and their pets.  The music will be great and Jack has a thought provoking sermon (inspite or and because of the barking) prepared.

On Wednesday night, I will be leaving for two weeks in South Africa. The Chicago Consultation, the group of international theologians and church leaders that Ruth Meyers and I founded in 2006 to move forward inclusion of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered people in the Anglican Communion, will be partnering with the Ujamaa Centre of the University of KwaZulu-Natal to convene a gathering of Anglicans who are interested in the theology of human sexuality and justice.  I'm delighted to be one of the North American representatives who will be presenting in the course of the consultation.  In addition, one our parishioners, Ruth Frey, will be attending, along with our bishop, Jeff Lee. Please keep us in your prayers as we travel and keep me in your thoughts as I prepare my presentation!

The co-conveners of the consultation are Professor Gerald West, director of the Ujamaa Centre, and Professor Esther Mombo of St. Paul's University in Limuru, Kenya.  The consultation which will involve about 55 people and will be grounded in prayer and Bible study.  Participants will include theologians, bishops, church leaders, grassroots advocates for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people and other people willing to engage in intensive conversations across cultural boundaries.

I'll be posting regularly on Facebook from the Consultation and I invite you to mark your calendars for Thursday, October 27th at 7:30 when Bishop Lee, Ruth Frey and I will gather at All Saints' to share our thoughts and experiences of our concentrated time with our sisters and brothers from Africa.

On the home front, we will be celebrating All Saints' Day and Day of the Dead on Sunday, October 30th.  I'm delighted that Fran Holliday arranged for Bishop Lee to be with us on one of our best Sundays of the year.  If you or your child would like to be baptized, please send an e-mail to me (bonnie@allsaintschicago.org) or to Beau (beau@allsaintschicago.org).  Or if you'd like to be confirmed, received or reaffirm your baptismal vows again--please send a note to me and to Beau.  If you have questions about any of these possibilities, send me a note or give me a call.

I'm looking forward to seeing all of you before I depart for Africa!

All my best,

Bonnie

New Orleans and Terrebone Parish, LA, Here We Come

Seventeen folks will head down to New Orleans on Oct. 1 for our 11th Rebuild Trip. While in NOLA, we will check out "Art for Art's Sake"; worship with St. Luke's, our partner parish; work with the Episcopal Community Services of LA Rebuild Program; and hang out with Hilary Waldron.  On our 5th day, we head down to the Bayou country to work with Bayou Grace on plant restoration and the "Voices of the Wetlands Festival."  Team members include:  Rob Book (Team Organizer), Dan Acosta, Mike Burke, Caty Norman-Burke,  Lynn Bowers, Kay Collins, Betty Douglas, Barbara Dufford, Rev. Fran Holliday,  Lyle Hyde, Marianne Hyde, Norm Linde, Mike Maszk, Susan Sullivan, Joey Sylvester, Linda Toelke, and Alice Wozniak.

If you want to help save the Wetlands,  our friends from Bayou Grace ask us to support the RESTORE Gulf Coast Act, S 1400. It helps to assure that 80% of penalities paid under last year's Gulf oil disaster are used to help restore the region's communities, ecosystems and economies instead of going to unrelated federal funding.

Merci, Joey Sylvester, Facilitator, Katrina Task Force.

Mark your calendars!
First Wednesdays Supper Club is coming.

Food....Fellowship....Engaging discussion....

(Remember...the only rule to Supper Club....tell EVERYONE about SupperClub)
              supperclub
We will gather at 6:30 pm the first Wednesday of each month in the parish hall for a light supper, followed by prayer and reflection on a variety of different spiritual topics.  (Those involved in other activities on Wednesday night such as choir or EFM may join us for dinner, of course, then head to your own group!)

We will begin on October 5th with a reflection on the life and lessons of St. Francis led by Jack Clark. Future topics to be announced.

Childcare to be provided.

Sign up for the supper by emailing Beau Surratt at beau@allsaintschicago.org. Please sign up by Monday, October 3 at 5pm to reserve your place at the supper- we need to know in advance so we know how much food to order.

If you have any questions or suggestions, please contact Michelle Lester at 847-312-3300 or email adultformation@allsaintschicago.org.

Sunday, October 16, 10-11 am, Parish Hall:  "The Blessing of Memory" will invite us to reflect on the gift of remembering our deceased loved ones, even as these memories may evoke feelings of loss and sadness.  Prayer flags will be available for recording the names and legacy of these loved ones, as we together prepare for our annual feast day.  Led by Pam Palmentera, bereavement counselor.

Calling all Young Adults!

All Saints' Day/Day of the Dead
Sunday, October 30
DOD2008
On Sunday, October 30, All Saints' will celebrate both All Saints' and All Souls' days with festivity, New Orleans-style music, and reverence. We invite you to invoke the spirits of and pray for departed loved ones by writing their names, your prayers, or whatever you desire on the colored paper available at the back of the church or by submitting your offerings electronically here. Your offerings will be incorporated into colorful strings of Mexican paper banners that will be arrayed throughout the sanctuary.

ofrendaYou are also invited to create an ofrenda- an offering or altar- in honor of a loved one.  It can be as simple as a framed photo or it can be a more elaborate tableau that includes the favorite food, drink, and other worldly icons that evoke the departed. Ofrendas can be brought to the church between now and October 30 and will be displayed around the sanctuary on that day.

About Day of the Deadcatrina
In Mexico, November 1, All Saints' Day, and November 2, All Souls' Day, are a joyful time of remembrance known as Los Dias de los Muertos, the Days of the
Dead. During this time, the souls of the dead return to earth-the spirits of los angelitos (children) on All Saints' Day and the spirits of adults on All Souls' Day. On October 31, families go to the graveyard to clean tombs and gravestones and to construct altars that honor their loved ones.  These altars are bedecked with candles, gifts, flowers, photographs, the favorite food and drink of the departed, and candies and toys in the shapes of skulls and skeletons symbolizing the promise of resurrection, rather than decay and death. Profuse displays of marigolds and chrysanthemums are common.

About Hunger and Resilience.  Can you help?
St. James Cathedral (65 E. Huron Street, downtown) is hosting "About Hunger and Resilience," an interactive exhibit by Michael Nye October 7 through October 30.

St. James Cathedral will open its doors, inviting all into a sacred space to look, listen, learn, contemplate and act. The exhibit is open Wednesday through Saturday from noon until 6 p.m. and Sundays between 12:30 p.m. and 3 p.m. (closed on Mondays and Tuesdays).

Click here to listen to (or read) NPR's story about this moving exhibit:   http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=125299636

Or go here for more information about the exhibit:

http://vimeo.com/28835693

The Cathedral is seeking volunteers who care about the issue of hunger to serve as hosts.  Volunteer hosts will staff an information table near the entrance/exit to the exhibit, and will be invited to share information with guests about how they can help address the issue of hunger.

Ravenswood Community Services is partnering with the Cathedral to provide volunteer hosts at the exhibit.  Volunteer shifts are available Wednesdays through Saturdays each week in October from noon until 2 p.m., 2 o'clock until 4 p.m. and 4 o'clock until 6 p.m; and Sundays from 12:30 p.m. until 3 o'clock. There is a particular need for volunteers on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays.  If your schedule allows, please consider volunteering for a few shifts throughout the month to tell curious guests about your work at RCS.

All volunteers are invited to a reception with Michael Nye on Thursday, October 6 from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. at St. James Cathedral.  Meet the artist, meet others who care about hunger and learn more about this powerful exhibit.

To reserve your volunteer shift, please contact Susan Rex at hunger@saintjamescathedral.org.  Be sure to mention that you are volunteering on behalf of Ravenswood Community Services, as any donations collected at the exhibit will be shared among participating partner agencies to support their hunger relief efforts.

Please note:  St. James Cathedral is located near the Red Line (Chicago Avenue stop).  Discounted parking is available for $9 at the Millenium Centre Parking Garage at 33 W. Ontario (entry on either Ontario or Ohio).  But sure to ask for a discount parking ticket at the Cathedral.
