Dear Friends,
Below you will find an update on our North "hole in the" Wall Project. Please take a few moments to read this message from the Capital Campaign group for the latest news about when construction is expected to begin, etc.
I want to take this opportunity to remind you about the "All Saints' Care Ministry" which is available to parishioners and their families in times of difficulty or during any type of life transition. The Care Committee is a team of people who can prepare and drop off meals, help with brief errands and rides. If you are ill, have a death in your family, are having a new baby or you are facing any other life transition the Care Committee is here to support you. Please contact us if you need this type of support at care@allsaintschicago.org. Elizabeth Shapiro and I coordinate this ministry and we are always looking for new people to join the care team. Please contact us if you are able to occasionally provide a meal or a ride to someone in need.
This Sunday we will be observing Labor Day with a special Sunday Service designed by the Justice Circle. Karen Mooney will be our guest musician and Jack Clark will preach.
On Sunday September 11 we will observe the tenth anniversary of 9-11 and on Sunday September 18 we will kick off the school year with our annual Backpack Blessing at our 9 and 11:00 a.m. services.
Please remember that we are starting all of our Sunday Services on time. Keep this in mind when you set your alarm clocks.
Bonnie Perry will be back in the office on Wednesday.
I am looking forward to seeing all of you on Sunday,
Rev. Fran Holliday

North "Hole in the" Wall Project Update
Dear Friends,
As we mentioned to you in our e-newsletter on June 24 and in our printed bulletin in the following weeks, we have begun the process of getting the necessary permits, etc. to begin the north ("hole in the") wall repair project. At that time, we expected that we'd be starting construction beginning in September but we are still in permitting phase and hope to start construction next month. However, as any of us who have been involved in construction projects know, it doesn't go as quickly as planned. Our architects from Bauer Latoza Studio have been actively working with the City pursuing the necessary permits to enable us to begin the project. This is not a simple project as it involves major structural repairs to the church building. There have been some recent changes in the Building Department which we hope will not delay the process.
At this point, our project schedule has us beginning construction in October. We are currently on track with the permitting process and believe that, barring any unforeseen circumstances, we will be able to complete this work this year as indicated on the original schedule. Although there has been some concern about cold weather impacting the curing of concrete with this later start date, the professionals involved in the project tell us that, barring an unusual early cold snap or extended delay in obtaining the permit (an outside possibility), there should be time to pour concrete without any problems (concrete cures via a chemical reaction, not dries, and actually produces heat in the curing process).
There has been lots of "behind the scenes" hard work going on with this project throughout the summer and we will soon be able to see some tangible evidence of that work and the extraordinarily generous contributions of all us toward repairing our 127 year-old church home.
Particular thanks to parishioner (and architect!) David Jennerjahn who has spent hours acting as translator of architectural/engineering language.
In the mean time, pray. And we'll keep you updated.
Blessings,
Bonnie, Jack Garland, Anneliese Gallagher and Ann McKenzie

| Church School Returns September 11! | | There are three classes that meet at 10am almost every Sunday - 3 to 6 year-olds, 6 to 9 year-olds and 9 to 12 year-olds.
Do you have a 3 year old who will be new to church school this year? Do you have a child, of any age, who will be new to church school? If so, please contact Polly Tangora at polly@allsaintschicago.org or Andrea Garland at agarland@ameritech.net so that we may provide you and your child with important information. We look forward to a great church school year! |
| Ravenswood School Supply Drive, Sponsored by the All Saints Youth Group! (ASYG) | | Our youth group would like to ask for your participation in a school supply drive for Ravenswood School!
WHO: Many of the 6th, 7th and 8th grade children will come to Ravenswood school without any basic supplies to start the school year. In fact, most of the middle schoolers are on free or reduced lunch, which means they live in a low income household. There are about 40 children per class, and we'd like to set them up for a great start to the school year!
WHEN: In the next 4 weeks, we'd like to collect the needed supplies so that we can present them to the Ravenswood School representatives at the Backpack Blessing on Sunday, September 18.
WHAT WE NEED:
Spiral Notebooks
Composition Notebooks
Loose Leaf Paper
Two Pocket Folders
Pens
Pencils (#2)
Index Cards
Hand Held Pencil Sharpeners
Scotch Tape
Glue Stick/Elmers Glue
Highlighters
Binders
Three Hole Punch
Rulers
Scissors
Small Staplers
Pencil Bags/Cases
Copy Paper---Lots and lots of copy paper!
WHERE: Please drop off your donations in the back of the church near the front doors. There are several containers that say RAVENSWOOD SCHOOL DONATIONS.
Thank you so very much for your time and efforts in supporting this most important neighborhood ministry.
Please contact Beth Lee at Blee@jny.com with any questions!
Peace,
ASYG

Dates will be announced in the All Saints' e-newsletter and at rehearsals.

The 9am Adult Choir joins with the All Ages Choir when they sing. All Ages Choir dates are still be determined. | All Saints' Book Group Meeting | | The All Saints' Book Group will be meeting Thursday September 8th at 7:30 pm in the humble abode of Anne Ellis (contact Aubrey, bookgroup@allsaintschicago.org, for directions). We will be discussing the fearsome and slim novel Wide Sargasso Sea by Jean Rhys, which is an account of Mrs. Rochester (you know, the crazy one) from Charlotte Brontë's immortal classic Jane Eyre (which we read last month).
If you are totally unfamiliar with Jane Eyre, there are plenty of movies ranging from 6.5 to 2 hours long, depending on your taste. Brush up, hit the book, and join us! We'll also be planning books for future months, so bring suggestions!

Bring nothing but yourself, a smile, big dreams, and an open mind-- we are so excited to see you! Parents of ASYG members are asked to meet at 10 am outside Bonnie & Beau's office on kickoff Sunday, Spetember 11 for more information about the upcoming year. To find out more, contact Beth Lee and the ASYG leadership team at asyg@allsaintschicago.org.

Are you in your 20's/30's, and interested in worship? All Saints is participating in a project with three other progressive Protestant churches on the northside. Participants will share a meal, then, over the course of three months, visit each of the other churches with the aim of exploring why these churches are flourishing and attracting young adults. The project will conclude with a conference and final dinner next spring. If you're interested or have questions, contact Jack Clark at jack@allsaintschicago.org.

| Interested in working with our children at All Saints'? | | As we begin the new church school year All Saints' is looking for help in our church school classrooms on Sunday mornings and with a number of events and activities throughout the year: ˇ Fright Fest / Day of the Dead Weekend - October 28, 29, 30 - helping plan, set up and run the Horrible Haunted Undercroft, The not so scary haunted maze and the incredibly fun spooky games in the parish hall ˇ "Saturday Camp" days -Dec. 3 for Advent and Palm Saturday March 31 for the children 4 to 9 ˇ The Christmas pageant during December assisting with the rehearsals and preparation for the production that will be given December 18 ˇ Exploring and planning the possibility of holding an All Saints' Vacation Bible School next summer ˇ Sunday morning church school classes. There are three classes that meet at 10am almost every Sunday - 3 to 6 year-olds, 6 to 9 year-olds and 9 to 12 year-olds. Often people interested in working in these classes begin by serving as assistants after meeting for a Saturday orientation session to get some "basic training". Some of our assistants work on a fairly regular basis while others serve as occassional substitutes. ˇ Youth Group - Our youth group here at All Saints' meets on Sunday afternoons from around 3pm to 6 or 7pm. This last year there have been craft projects, reflections, discussions, worship and the production of a fantastic Christmas pageant. The youth group also takes field trips, spends the night before Pentecost sleeping in and around the church and helps carry out the Bake Auction. Help with supervision and just hanging out is needed. We ask all our volunteers to fill out an application and take part in an interview to discern what kind of assignment might best suit their talents and schedule. Volunteers also need to take the "Keeping God's People Safe" workshop either before or within the first few months of their service. If you are interested in helping with any of these please speak with one of our church school teachers, youth leaders or contact Polly Tangora, polly@allsaintschicago.org. |
| Sudanese Guests September 25 | |
Bishop Joseph Garang Atem and Chief Bior Kuir Aguer Deng, chief of the Dinka Tribe in Upper Nile State, South Sudan, will be with us on Sunday, September 25th. | Several ways to get your All Saints' news | | Via Facebook and Twitter Up-to-the-minute updates and interesting things from all sorts of sources are posted via our Facebook and Twitter accounts. The best part about social media is that all of us can post items and engage in conversation about what is posted! You can also view our recent Facebook posts on each page of our website at http://www.allsaintschicago.org.
Via This Weekly Newsletter and Midweek Updates Each Friday afternoon, we send out this email newsletter that contains information about everything we know of that is coming up at All Saints'. The deadline for submitting items for this newsletter is Wednesday at 5pm. Additional reminders and other news not included in the Friday email are occasionally sent out mid-week on an as-needed basis. You can sign up for this email list by using the link at the bottom of the newsletter, at our website here or by emailing Beau in the office at beau@allsaintschicago.org. Via the Website Information about some upcoming events is conveyed via the scrolling pictures on the homepage of our website (all of them are links to more information), www.allsaintschicago.org. The weekly email newsletter is also posted on the website here and the calendar is here. Other resources, such as information about various ministries, staff contact info, pledge and donation info and liturgical ministers schedules are also available via the website.
In Print
If you're a person who prefers to get the news in print, we have a way for you to stay updated as well! We've always provided a print version of the All Saints' news in the weekly worship booklet, but recently, in an effort to save paper, the environment and money (not necessarily in that order) and to avoid duplication of work, we've begun to provide a limited number of paper copies of our email newsletter to satisfy our need for a paper newsletter. As you leave church on Sunday or during the week, you can find (color!) copies of the email newsletter at the main Hermitage Ave. entrance to the church, at the entrance near Bonnie and Beau's office and at the ramp entrance to the church. Feel free to take one so you can stay informed of all the latest news from All Saints'.
Feedback? As always, if you have feedback about ways we could communicate more effectively at All Saints', especially as it concerns the day-to-day news and notifications, please speak to Beau Surratt or any member of the staff or email Beau at beau@allsaintschicago.org. |
