Dear Friends,

I want to remind you of all the volunteer opportunities there are to help our neighbors in need.  Tuesday August 30 is "Family Night" at our pantry and meal program.  This is an opportunity for children to get hands on experience in the kitchen and help prepare and serve a meal.  Children of all ages are welcome to attend with their parents.  Volunteers are needed to come at 5:00 p.m.-7:00 p.m.  Please contact our volunteer coordinator Liz Embler to sign up at

liz@ravenswoodcommunityservices.org.

On Sunday September 18 from 5-7 p.m. we will hold our next "All Saints' Café".  This is a wonderful opportunity for our neighbors to have a fine dinning experience complete with a menu, choice of entrees, beverage service, wait staff and live entertainment.  Volunteers are needed on Saturday September 17th to help with food preparation and also on Sunday September 18 to help serve, bus tables, and clean up.  Please contact Liz Embler if you would like to volunteer.

This Sunday Brooke Lester will be our guest preacher.   Brooke  received his Phd in Biblical Studies from Princeton and is on the faculty of Garrett Evangelical Theological Seminary in Evanston.  He is also a parishioner here at All Saints'.

See You All on Sunday,

Rev. Fran Holliday

A Faith Response to Violence
Friday at 10:30pm, 7-Eleven at Halsted and Roscoe
This Friday, at 10:30pm at the 7-Eleven on Halsted and Roscoe, we'll be holding another Vigil Against Violence. This event, like the last one, provides a space to reflect pray for peace and safety for everyone who lives, works, plays in or visits Lakeview. No finger-pointing. No blaming. Instead, an invitation to prayer, reflection, and hope for peace.

You can RSVP at the Facebook event here:
More Yoga at All Saints'!
Mondays, August 22 and 29
6:30-7:45pm in the Parish Hall

If you didn't get a chance to come to the recent yoga classes at All Saints' or you came and left wanting more, now's your chance.

Certified Yoga teacher and All Saints' parishioner Ruth Frey will teach Gentle Yoga on two more Monday nights in August.

Join your friends and neighbors to stretch, breathe and relax in the All Saints' parish hall during this summer of awesome.  Bring a yoga mat if you have one or a blanket or sheet if you don't.  6:30 to 7:45 pm on August 22 and 29.

All Saints' Ladies' Boat Trip

Ladies! Sail away with ECW on our last Summer of Awesome outing! Join us on Thursday, August 25th as we cast off from Navy Pier and head out on Shoreline Chicago's nighttime architectural cruise! Beer and Hymns.

Friday, August 26 at 7pm at The Grafton, 4530 N. Lincoln

We'll get together, enjoy food and beverages (dutch treat) and sing hymns. This is guaranteed to be the most fun you've ever had on a Friday night.

RSVP via the Facebook event here.

Please, no more bags!
The Ravenswood Community Services (RCS) food pantry has enough plastic bags to last us until the second coming! Thank you for your bag donations, please note that we are no longer accepting bag donations!
Potluck Eucharist
Wednesday, August 31 at 6:30pm
Please join us as we bring the Summer of Awesome to a close by sharing a Potluck Meal and a Eucharist together.

We'll gather much like we do on Maundy Thursday, around delicious food prepared by members of the All Saints' community. We'll sing together, eat together, spend some time talking about Scripture and share together in the Eucharist-- in Communion--in God's holy meal of thanksgiving.

We'll make the liturgy together.
If you'd like to help shape the liturgy- the framework and common prayer for our time together, contact Fran Holliday (fran@allsaintschicago.org) or Jack Clark (jack@allsaintschicago.org)

We'll make a dish together
If you'd have some time to get together a little earlier in the day, the staff will be making a dish together to contribute to the gathering. Contact Beau Surratt at beau@allsaintschicago.org if you'd like to help cook.

Bring yourself, your family and friends, and a dish to share. The church staff will provide the rest.
Baby Playdate
Thursday, September 1 at 10:30am

Please join us as we celebrate the summer of awesome... babies! Bring your little one to a picnic in the Parish Hall on Thursday, September 1 at 10:30am (parking is better after 10!). We'll share stories, laugh, and enjoy each other's company... all before nap time! This is a great event for new families... or families new to All Saints! Please RSVP to care@allsaintschicago.org

Church School Returns September 11!
cschool
There are three classes that meet at 10am almost every Sunday  - 3 to 6 year-olds, 6 to 9 year-olds and 9 to 12 year-olds.

Do you have a 3 year old who will be new to church school this year? Do you have a child, of any age, who will be new to church school? If so, please contact Polly Tangora at polly@allsaintschicago.org or Andrea Garland at agarland@ameritech.net so that we may provide you and your child with important information.  We look forward to a great church school year!

Interested in working with our children at All Saints'?
cschool

As we begin the new church school year All Saints' is looking for help in our church school classrooms on Sunday mornings and with a number of events and activities throughout the year:

· Fright Fest / Day of the Dead Weekend - October 28, 29, 30 - helping plan, set up and run the Horrible Haunted Undercroft, The not so scary haunted maze and the incredibly fun spooky games in the parish hall

· "Saturday Camp" days -Dec. 3 for Advent and Palm Saturday March 31 for the children 4 to 9

· The Christmas pageant during December assisting with the rehearsals and preparation for the production that will be given December 18

· Exploring and planning the possibility of holding an All Saints' Vacation Bible School next summer

· Sunday morning church school classes.  There are three classes that meet at 10am almost every Sunday  - 3 to 6 year-olds, 6 to 9 year-olds and 9 to 12 year-olds.   Often people interested in working in these classes begin by serving as assistants after meeting for a Saturday orientation session to get some "basic training".  Some of our assistants work on a fairly regular basis while others serve as occassional substitutes.

· Youth Group - Our youth group here at All Saints' meets on Sunday afternoons from around 3pm to 6 or 7pm.  This last year there have been craft projects, reflections, discussions, worship and the production of a fantastic Christmas pageant.  The youth group also takes field trips, spends the night before Pentecost sleeping in and around the church and helps carry out the Bake Auction.  Help with supervision and just hanging out is needed.

We ask all our volunteers to fill out an application and take part in an interview to discern what kind of assignment might best suit their talents and schedule.  Volunteers also need to take the "Keeping God's People Safe" workshop either before or within the first few months of their service.

If you are interested in helping with any of these please speak with one of our church school teachers, youth leaders or contact Polly Tangora, polly@allsaintschicago.org.

Ravenswood School Supply Drive, Sponsored by the All Saints Youth Group! (ASYG)
schoolsupplies

Our youth group would like to ask for your participation in a school supply drive for Ravenswood School!

WHO: Many of the 6th, 7th and 8th grade children will come to Ravenswood school without any basic supplies to start the school year.  In fact, most of the middle schoolers are on free or reduced lunch, which means they live in a low income household. There are about 40 children per class, and we'd like to set them up for a great start to the school year!

WHEN:  In the next 4 weeks, we'd like to collect the needed supplies so that we can present them to the Ravenswood School representatives at the Backpack Blessing on Sunday, September 18.

WHAT WE NEED:

Spiral Notebooks

Composition Notebooks

Loose Leaf Paper

Two Pocket Folders

Pens

Pencils (#2)

Index Cards

Hand Held Pencil Sharpeners

Scotch Tape

Glue Stick/Elmers Glue

Highlighters

Binders

Three Hole Punch

Rulers

Scissors

Small Staplers

Pencil Bags/Cases

Copy Paper---Lots and lots of copy paper!

WHERE:  Please drop off your donations in the back of the church near the front doors. There are several containers that say RAVENSWOOD SCHOOL DONATIONS.

Thank you so very much for your time and efforts in supporting this most important neighborhood ministry.

Please contact Beth Lee at Blee@jny.com with any questions!

Peace,

ASYG

Upcoming Liturgy and Music

Sunday, August 28

Ed Bird, All Saints' parishioner and seminary student at McCormick Seminary in Hyde Park, will be our guest preacher.

Erin Marshall, Soloist, singing the Welsh hymn "Calon Lân," a hymn often associated with Welsh rugby union, being sung before almost every Test match involving the Welsh national team.

Juleigh Ruby, Lori Gee, Beau Surratt and Ken Jones in a quartet, singing Thomas Tallis's "If Ye Love Me," a beautiful (and relatively popular) piece from 16th century Tudor England.

Sunday, September 4

This Labor Day weekend, we will pray in the spirit of the Collect for Labor Day from the Book of Common Prayer:

Almighty God, who hast so linked our lives one with another that all we do affects, for good or ill, all other lives: So guide us in the work we do, that we may do it not for self alone, but for the common good; and, as we seek a proper return for our own labor, make us mindful of the rightful aspirations of other workers, and arouse our concern for those who are out of work; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. (BCP 210)

Jack Clark will preach and Karen Mooney, vocalist and guitarist, will be our guest musician.

Sunday, September 11

On this, the 10th anniversary of the September 11th attacks, we will pray about how we strive to live as a people of reconciliation, forgiveness, hope, justice and peace in light of the events of 9/11/2001.

Bonnie will be back and preaching, our choirs will be back to singing at the 9 and 11am services and Kathy Flint, cellist, will offer special music for the prelude and during communion.

Sunday, September 18

Backpack Blessing! The Rev. Ashley Thom, All Saints' parishioner, teacher at Rogers Park Montessori School and Episcopal Priest, will be our guest preacher.

News from Santa Maria Virgen and the Diocese of Southeast Mexico
Dave and Karen, facilitators of our partner parish relationship in the Diocese of Southeast Mexico, have asked us to keep our relationship with Santa María Virgen and the rest of the Diocese of Southeast Mexico in our prayers this Sunday. See below for highlights of their trip so far and read more on our website.

We have now been in Mexico nearly three weeks.  Highlights of our trip include:

A visit to Mission San Pedro in Arroyo Zacate, where we attended a baptism and Sunday Mass and visits to two missions in Chiapas, one in San Cristobal and the other in the small, mainly indigenous village of Yochib.  We continue to be impressed with the work that the clergy and lay Anglicans are doing in the Diocese of Southeast Mexico under very challenging conditions.

In a couple of days we will continue on to Xalapa to meet with Bishop Benito and our friends at Iglesia Santa María Virgen.  On Sunday, we will be in the congregation when Bayron Chanchanac, a former Roman Catholic priest, will be received into the Anglican Communion.  In six months or so he will be received as an Anglican priest and will take over as the new leader at Santa María.  Please keep him, Bishop Benito and the faithful of Santa María Virgen in your prayers.

Inquirers/Newcomers Conversations

question
Several ways to get your All Saints' news
Via Facebook and Twitter
Up-to-the-minute updates and interesting things from all sorts of sources are posted via our Facebook and Twitter accounts. The best part about social media is that all of us can post items and engage in conversation about what is posted! You can also view our recent Facebook posts on each page of our website at http://www.allsaintschicago.org.

Via This Weekly Newsletter and Midweek Updates
Each Friday afternoon, we send out this email newsletter that contains information about everything we know of that is coming up at All Saints'. The deadline for submitting items for this newsletter is Wednesday at 5pm. Additional reminders and other news not included in the Friday email are occasionally sent out mid-week on an as-needed basis. You can sign up for this email list by using the link at the bottom of the newsletter, at our website here or by emailing Beau in the office at beau@allsaintschicago.org.

Via the Website
Information about some upcoming events is conveyed via the scrolling pictures on the homepage of our website (all of them are links to more information), www.allsaintschicago.org. The weekly email newsletter is also posted on the website here and the calendar is here. Other resources, such as information about various ministries, staff contact info, pledge and donation info and liturgical ministers schedules are also available via the website.

In Print
If you're a person who prefers to get the news in print, we have a way for you to stay updated as well! We've always provided a print version of the All Saints' news in the weekly worship booklet, but recently, in an effort to save paper, the environment and money (not necessarily in that order) and to avoid duplication of work, we've begun to provide a limited number of paper copies of our email newsletter to satisfy our need for a paper newsletter. As you leave church on Sunday or during the week, you can find (color!) copies of the email newsletter at the main Hermitage Ave. entrance to the church, at the entrance near Bonnie and Beau's office and at the ramp entrance to the church. Feel free to take one so you can stay informed of all the latest news from All Saints'.

Feedback?
As always, if you have feedback about ways we could communicate more effectively at All Saints', especially as it concerns the day-to-day news and notifications, please speak to Beau Surratt or any member of the staff or email Beau at  beau@allsaintschicago.org.
