Greetings!

If you have been around the church at all then you know the "Summer of Awesome", continues to be awesome!

Every Wednesday evening we continue to gather on the front lawn at 7 p.m. to spin the "Wheel of Awesome" at our Summer Salon.

The topic of discussion for the evening is determined by where the spinner lands. Please join us for conversation, refreshments and just a great time of fun and relaxation.

Ravenswood Community Services is also having an awesome summer. I am pleased to let you know that thanks to the work of Wendy Vasquez, Jack Clark, and RCS board member Avril Greenberg, we have begun to offer a 6 week cooking and nutrition class, to our neighbors in need.   The class is taught by "Cooking Matters", an organization working to end hunger and promote good nutrition. They provide the nutritionist, cook and other volunteers who run the class. We have 15 neighbors enrolled in the current class, which began Wednesday July 13.   It is our hope to continue to provide the class to more of our neighbors in the near future.

On Sunday July 31 the Rev. Lora Walsh, parishioner and transitional deacon will be preaching. We are also celebrating "Seersucker, Straw Hat Sunday"  and you are invited to dress appropriately. Lemonade will be served on the front lawn in between the 9 and 11:00 services.

This Sunday our very own awesome seminarian/intern Jack Clack will be preaching.

Looking forward to seeing you all on Sunday.

Rev. Fran Holliday

A Faith Response to Violence
Saturday, July 23 at 10:30pm
7-Eleven Parking Lot at Halsted and Roscoe
All Saints' folks who plan to go do the event are invited to meet at the Parish Hall entrance (1757 W. Wilson) at 9:30pm to take the bus down together.

Join All Saints' Justice Circle as we offer A Faith Response to Violence-- a silent and reverent space to reflect on the violence (physical, emotional, and spiritual) in our communities and pray for its end. While the past few weeks in Boystown have brought about a stir of emotions, it's important now to find ways to reconcile and forgive-- and work towards lasting solutions for peace.

Let's be the change we want to see and show our opposition to all forms of violence and our commitment to building a safe community for all. Please join us for a time of prayer and reflection on Saturday, July 23, at 10:30 p.m. at the 7-Eleven parking lot located at Halsted and Roscoe.

We look forward to seeing many of you on the night of July 23rd, and ask that you keep the Faith Response to Violence as well as the Lakeview community in your prayers. And please bring candles with you to participate in the vigil.

Wheel of Awesome:  Summer Salons
CHILDCARE AVAILABLE
Bring your lawnchair, open mind and heart, and longing to connect deeply with others.  Wednesday evenings from 7-8:30 pm (June 29th-August 17th) on the northeast lawn of the church we will join in small groups to discuss spiritual topics of relevance to our lives.  Each week we will spin the wheel to see where our discussion will land:  "How does social networking impact our spiritual lives?"  "Can we unplug and still connect?"  "What REALLY counts as sin?"  "Is a playful piety an oxymoron?"  "What do the Bad Girls of the Bible have to say to us today?"

No Wheel of Fortune experience necessary to participate. No previous lawnchair theology required.  No lawnchair required -- bring a blanket.  Come, relax, make new friends, and enliven your faith this summer!

Childcare is available. If you want to know more,
adultformation@allsaintschicago.org or call Jeanne Wirpsa @ 773-316-6936.

Items needed for Ravenswood Community Services hygiene kits
Ravenswood Community Services (RCS) is in need of the following items for our hygiene kits: shaving cream, bar soap and tooth brushes.
We can use sample sizes or regular sizes.  If you would like to make a donation please leave them in the bins at the back of the church on Sunday
or drop them off at our food pantry.  Items are needed by Wednesday July 27th. For more information, contact Fran Holliday at fran@ravenswoodcommunityservices.org.

Please, no more bags!
The Ravenswood Community Services (RCS) food pantry has enough plastic bags to last us until the second coming! Thank you for your bag donations, please note that we are no longer accepting bag donations!

Chef Needed!

Three times a year, Ravenswood Community Services (RCS) transforms its weekly Community Kitchen into the "All Saints' Cafe," an amazing fine dining experience for our hungry neighbors. More than 100 volunteers come together to plan, shop, decorate, cook and serve this remarkable meal inspired by Chicago's top restaurants.

The All Saints' Café team is looking for a volunteer chef to lend his/her talents to this fall's edition of the Café, tentatively scheduled for September 11 (the date is flexible, depending on chef availability). Volunteer chef duties include working with the volunteer team to establish a theme, develop a menu, write a shopping list and oversee prep and cooking the weekend of the café. Click here for more information about the volunteer chef position or contact Fran Holliday by email or at 773-769-0282.

New Orleans Outreach Ministry Update
nola2010

Merci and thank you All Saints' for your ongoing support to help rebuild New Orleans and the Gulf Coastal wetlands.  Here are acknowledgements from Episcopal Community Services and Bayou Grace for our support for their work and news about our 10th rebuild trip.

Episcopal Community Services of Louisiana (ECSLA)

Please accept our gratitude for your recent generous gift totaling $6,000 for the Rebuild Program. You have been such faithful and enthusiastic partners in this ministry, and integral to its ability to serve hundreds of vulnerable residents of our area. More than anything, your continued expressions of solidarity inspire and motivate us!  We are looking forward to seeing you in October.  We appreciate your generosity and kindness in helping us turn devastation into God's beloved community.

ln gratitude,

Nell Bolton, Executive Director

Bayou Grace

Thank you for the generous contribution of $4000.  Your generosity helps to sustain our programs that create partnerships with residents of Bayous Pointe aux Chenes, Terrebonne, Petit Cailou, Grand Cailou and Dularge in Terrebonne Parish and concerned individuals from across the country to address Louisiana's most critical issues:  the effects of unnatural coastal erosion and the imperative for holistic restoration and protection.  It was a privilege and pleasure to be a small part of planning for GS3.

Warmest regards,

Rebecca Templeton, Executive Director

Rebuild Trip September 30-October 8, 2011

We will meet on July 20th at 7:00 pm in the Parish Hall to make plans for our 10th rebuild trip. Please contact Joey Sylvester or Rob Book at neworleans@allsaintschicago.org if you are interested.

Mexico Partnership Updates

A lot has been happening at Santa María Virgen, Xalapa, and we need to bring you up-to-date.

Padre César, who visited All Saints' last year has left Santa María, and Padre Bayron Chanchavac has taken his place. Padre Byron is a Roman Catholic priest, who is being received into the Anglican Church on August 14 and will be ordained an Anglican priest in about six months.  Padre Byron is from southern Mexico and is of indigenous heritage.  We have heard that Padre Bayron is a fine person, who is working hard to grow and develop the church in Xalapa.

We are going to Mexico on vacation in the middle of July and will attend Padre Bayron's reception service on August 14.  We also want work to develop new and stronger ties to the lay people of Santa María Virgen while we are there....

Growing Relationship with Cristo Rey, Chicago

For about a year now, several of us have been working to develop a relationship with the people of Iglesia Cristo Rey, a Hispanic Episcopal congregation at 5101 W. Devon.  Some of us have visited Cristo Rey for a Sunday service (11:00) and have attended various special events - they really know how to have fun!  Their Sunday Eucharist is bilingual, and we have been warmly welcomed.  In addition, Karen has begun teaching a class for members who want to learn or improve their English...

For more information about our ministries with Cristo Rey and Santa María Virgen, contact Dave and Karen Howe at mexico@allsaintschicago.org.

Coffee Hour is Going Green!
We have decided to begin using reusable cups and glasses for coffee hour to conserve resources and reduce trash.  Cups and glasses will be set out in their dishwasher racks on the coffee hour tables.  When you have finished with your cup or glass, please pour any remaining beverage down the sink and place the empty cup or glass on the metal trays.  Paper and plastic items should be placed in the garbage cans.  This will be greatly appreciated by the coffee hour hosts when they clean up.  If you prefer to use your own mug, feel free to do so.  Just remember to take it home with you.
