Greetings!

This Sunday, The Rev. Kevin Goodman will be preaching at our services.  Kevin was the assistant here and is now serving as the Associate Dean of St. James Cathedral.  He is very excited to see everyone.

During our Sunday service we will be remember and pray for the people of the Sudan.  This Saturday, July 9th, the Southern Sudan will officially become an independent country.  Please join us as we pray for the Sudan during this time of transition.

If you are looking for something to do over the summer, please join us on Tuesday nights from 5:30 p.m.-7:30 p.m. at our food pantry and meal program.  This Saturday, July 9 we also have our Mobile Pantry at the Ravenswood School parking lot.  Volunteers are needed from 8:30 a.m.-11:00 a.m. This is a great activity as well for children of all ages.

This Monday evening The Rev. CJ Hawking, Executive Director of ARISE Chicago, will be attending the Social Justice Circle Meeting.  She will be dicussing how we can stand  with workers experiencing wage theft. The meeting is at 7:00 and will be held in space outside of Bonnie and Beau's office. If you are interested in this topic, please join us.

I hope that all of you are having an awesome summer.  If you should need any assistance or have a pastoral care issue you may contact the church office at 773-561-0111.  You may also contact me on my cell phone  312-401-2058.

See you on Sunday,

All Saints' Book Group
Thursday, July 14 at 7pm

We will be reading the true-story account of Reading Lolita in Tehran by Azar Nafisi on Thursday July 14th at the Burke's house. For those interested in background reading, you are welcome to forge through Lolita, but Vladmir Nabokov, but this book group found it a bit strenuous and has made that reading optional.

As always, we will meet around 7 and try to get the discussion going by 7:15 over food, wine, and general hospitality. All are welcome!

For more information and exact location, contact Aubrey at bookgroup@allsaintschicago.org.

Wheel of Awesome:  Summer Salons
Bring your lawnchair, open mind and heart, and longing to connect deeply with others.  Wednesday evenings from 7-8:30 pm (June 29th-August 17th) on the northeast lawn of the church we will join in small groups to discuss spiritual topics of relevance to our lives.  Each week we will spin the wheel to see where our discussion will land:  "How does social networking impact our spiritual lives?"  "Can we unplug and still connect?"  "What REALLY counts as sin?"  "Is a playful piety an oxymoron?"  "What do the Bad Girls of the Bible have to say to us today?"

No Wheel of Fortune experience necessary to participate. No previous lawnchair theology required.  No lawnchair required -- bring a blanket.  Come, relax, make new friends, and enliven your faith this summer!

Childcare provided if there is a need -- just let us know ahead of time.   If you want to know more, or need childcare email  adultformation@allsaintschicago.org or call Jeanne Wirpsa @ 773-316-6936.

Buildings and Grounds Meeting
Saturday, July 9 at 10:30am
The B&G (Building & Grounds) gang will meet at 10:30 on July 9 --
we will catch up on the capital campaign and find out the current maintenance issues.  We welcome new members, and the time commitment is limited -- a meeting every other month now that we have our wonderful maintenance person.  We need your new ideas and fresh input!

For more information, contact Nancy Lischer at buildingsandgrounds@allsaintschicago.org

Coffee Hour is Going Green!
We have decided to begin using reusable cups and glasses for coffee hour to conserve resources and reduce trash.  Cups and glasses will be set out in their dishwasher racks on the coffee hour tables.  When you have finished with your cup or glass, please pour any remaining beverage down the sink and place the empty cup or glass on the metal trays.  Paper and plastic items should be placed in the garbage cans.  This will be greatly appreciated by the coffee hour hosts when they clean up.  If you prefer to use your own mug, feel free to do so.  Just remember to take it home with you.

New Orleans Outreach Ministry Update
nola2010

Merci and thank you All Saints' for your ongoing support to help rebuild New Orleans and the Gulf Coastal wetlands.  Here are acknowledgements from Episcopal Community Services and Bayou Grace for our support for their work and news about our 10th rebuild trip.

Episcopal Community Services of Louisiana (ECSLA)

Please accept our gratitude for your recent generous gift totaling $6,000 for the Rebuild Program. You have been such faithful and enthusiastic partners in this ministry, and integral to its ability to serve hundreds of vulnerable residents of our area. More than anything, your continued expressions of solidarity inspire and motivate us!  We are looking forward to seeing you in October.  We appreciate your generosity and kindness in helping us turn devastation into God's beloved community.

ln gratitude,

Nell Bolton, Executive Director

Bayou Grace

Thank you for the generous contribution of $4000.  Your generosity helps to sustain our programs that create partnerships with residents of Bayous Pointe aux Chenes, Terrebonne, Petit Cailou, Grand Cailou and Dularge in Terrebonne Parish and concerned individuals from across the country to address Louisiana's most critical issues:  the effects of unnatural coastal erosion and the imperative for holistic restoration and protection.  It was a privilege and pleasure to be a small part of planning for GS3.

Warmest regards,

Rebecca Templeton, Executive Director

Rebuild Trip September 30-October 8, 2011

We will meet on July 20th at 7:00 pm in the Parish Hall to make plans for our 10th rebuild trip. Please contact Joey Sylvester or Rob Book at neworleans@allsaintschicago.org if you are interested.

Mexico Partnership Updates

A lot has been happening at Santa María Virgen, Xalapa, and we need to bring you up-to-date.

Padre César, who visited All Saints' last year has left Santa María, and Padre Bayron Chanchavac has taken his place. Padre Byron is a Roman Catholic priest, who is being received into the Anglican Church on August 14 and will be ordained an Anglican priest in about six months.  Padre Byron is from southern Mexico and is of indigenous heritage.  We have heard that Padre Bayron is a fine person, who is working hard to grow and develop the church in Xalapa.

We are going to Mexico on vacation in the middle of July and will attend Padre Bayron's reception service on August 14.  We also want work to develop new and stronger ties to the lay people of Santa María Virgen while we are there....

Growing Relationship with Cristo Rey, Chicago

For about a year now, several of us have been working to develop a relationship with the people of Iglesia Cristo Rey, a Hispanic Episcopal congregation at 5101 W. Devon.  Some of us have visited Cristo Rey for a Sunday service (11:00) and have attended various special events - they really know how to have fun!  Their Sunday Eucharist is bilingual, and we have been warmly welcomed.  In addition, Karen has begun teaching a class for members who want to learn or improve their English...

Episcopal Church Women (ECW)
An Evening of Gossip and Art
Thursday, July 21 at the Art Institute of Chicago

Looking for an evening of gossip and art?  ECW is off to the Art Institute on Thursday July 21, for a guided tour of collection highlights given by parishioner Lydia Carr.  Lydia has years of museum experience, a fabulously decorative collection of advanced degrees, AND she's funny.  When she tells you the hot goss about Van Gogh or Saint Joan, you know it's 110% reliable.  We will meet at the Art Institute at 5:45, tour until 7-ish, and then repair to a local hostelry for dinner.  RSVP by Monday July 18 to Elizabeth Shapiro at care@allsaintschicago.org.

Important Note: If you have an AI membership card, you can bring in up to 4 guests free - so please let the ECW organizers know if that's the case when you sign up, and hopefully we'll all get in for nothing!

Big, big thanks!

Thank you to everyone who helped make Team RCS' participation in the Greater Chicago Food Depository's 26th Annual Hunger Walk last weekend such an amazing success.  Two school busses carried about 100 (yes, that's two zeros!) Team RCS members down to Soldier Field last Saturday to join more than 8,500 other Hunger Walkers in an effort to raise awareness and funds for local hunger issues. Donations are still coming in and the Food Depository is still calculating, but our best guess so far is that Team RCS raised about $7,000 through Hunger Walk, all of which will go directly to the purchase of food for our Tuesday night Food Pantry and Community Kitchen.  (Online donations will continue to be accepted until July 31 at www.chicagosfoodbank.org/goto/ravenswood.)

It will likely be August before we have the final, final tally for Team RCS, but in the mean time, RCS will continue to provide hunger relief to almost 300 families and individuals each week.  Thank you again to everyone who walked, donated, asked anyone for money, carried the flamingo, prayed for good weather or otherwise supported our Hunger Walk cause.  Everyone single one of you made a difference.

Acolyte Make-up Training
Any acolyte who could not make Great America is welcome to join Jack on Sunday, July 10th between the 9:00 and 11:00 services in the church for a brief training. Please RSVP to Jack at jack@allsaintschicago.org. If this doesn't work, please contact Jack to schedule individual training at jack@allsaintschicago.org

Thanks to Liz Embler

A very special thank you to Liz Embler, our Julian Intern who just completed her first year as the intern for Ravenswood Community Services.  Liz serves as our Volunteer Coordinator and has done

a remarkable job.  We are very happy that she will return for another year with RCS beginning in mid- August.   Currently she has returned home to Knoxville Tennessee for a well deserved break. Liz lived in community with 8 other Julian Interns who

5 of whom will also be returning to Chicago for another year working with Episcopal Charities Agencies.

Sudan Update
We are rapidly approaching the July 9, when Southern Sudan will officially become an independent country. Check out the Statement from the President below for an update on the situation, and please keep the people of Sudan in your prayers during this difficult time of transition.

THE WHITE HOUSE

Office of the Press Secretary

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

June 22, 2011

Statement from the President on Sudan

On Monday, the Government of Sudan and the Sudan People's Liberation Movement (SPLM) signed an agreement in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, to reduce tensions in Abyei and allow UN peacekeepers from Ethiopia into the region.   I commend the parties for taking this step forward toward peace, and I urge them now to build on that progress and agree to an immediate cease fire in Southern Kordofan.  Under the Comprehensive Peace Agreement, both parties committed to resolve their differences peacefully, and both parties have a responsibility to end the current violence and allow immediate humanitarian access to desperate people who have been driven from their homes and are now cut off from outside help.

The situation in Southern Kordofan is dire, with deeply disturbing reports of attacks based on ethnicity.  The United States condemns all acts of violence, in particular the Sudanese Armed Forces aerial bombardment  of civilians and harassment and intimidation of UN peacekeepers.  With a ceasefire in Southern Kordofan, alongside the agreement to deploy peacekeepers to Abyei, we can get the peace process back on track.  But without these actions, the roadmap for better relations with the Government of Sudan cannot be carried forward, which will only deepen Sudan's isolation in the international community. Without a cease-fire and political negotiations, the people of Southern Kordofan cannot enjoy the right to have their political grievances addressed. The negotiations now under way in Addis Ababa demand the urgent commitment from both sides to peace and to the agreement for immediate help to those civilians caught up in this conflict.
