THANK YOU! from the Gumbo Stomp Krewe
gator
Merci, Merci from Cajun Fred and the entire Gumbo Stomp Krewe for supporting the May 14th fundraiser by volunteering, making donations and bread pudding, and coming out on a cold and rainy night.

All who came had a stomping good time while raising ~$7000 (and still counting) to help rebuild 1 home in New Orleans and to support plant restoration, as well as folks living in Terrebonne Parish impacted by the BP drilling disaster and now living with more uncertainty due to potential flooding.  Keep these folks and our friends in NOLA in your prayers.

Tweet if You ♥ Jesus:  Practicing Church in the Digital Reformation
Lecture, Discuss
ion and Book Signing

The next Christian Reformation is happening on Facebook and Twitter.
Social media offer powerful tools for the practice of Christian faith and a great challenge to modern understandings of what it means to be a friend, a spiritual companion, or a member of a community.  What does it mean to 'love your neighbor' in a world in which a 'friend' might as easily be the kid from down the street you grew up with as a woman in Botswana whom you've never seen in person and only know in the context of Facebook?

Join Elizabeth Drescher, author of the new book, Tweet if You ♥ Jesus:  Practicing Church in the Digital Reformation, for a discussion about how these critical issues are grounded in the histories of Christianity and mass communications.  "We must travel through this landscape on its own terms," Drescher reminds us, "open throughout to the possibility that God just might be doing an entirely new thing among us-140 characters at a time."

Dr. Drescher will be available to sign her book, Tweet if You ♥ Jesus, which will be available for purchase at this event.

Elizabeth Drescher is an educator, scholar, writer and speaker on Christian spirituality, with an emphasis on the spiritual practices of ordinary believers and seekers today and in the past. She holds a PhD in Christian Spirituality from the Graduate Theological Union and an MA in Systematic Theology from Duquesne University. Dr. Drescher teaches in the undergraduate program in Religious Studies and the graduate program in Pastoral Ministry at Santa Clara University. Dr. Drescher is a regular contributor to the highly regarded online magazine, Religion Dispatchesand a well-known preacher, conference speaker, and workshop leader for churches, seminaries, colleges and universities, and religious organizations.

All Saints' Babysitting Night
Friday, June 3 from 6-10pm
Do you have children?

Has it been forever since you've had a "date night" with your spouse or significant other?

Having a hard time finding babysitters?

Bring the kids to All Saints' on Friday night, June 3rd from 6:00pm to 10:00pm!

We are hosting a babysitting night for children ages 0 - 12, in the sanctuary and reading room areas. We will have games, activities, and movies, sure to be a fun time for all!  We are asking for a $10 donation per family per hour - all money raised will go to support the church operating budget.

WE ALSO NEED VOLUNTEERS! Have you completed the "Keeping God's Children Safe" training? Please e-mail Christy Drackett (christydrackett@gmail.com) or Rick Lumsden (rlumsden@eb.com) if you can assist with childcare on the 3rd.
Enjoy Memorial Day - spend some time outside

For everything God created is good, and nothing is to be rejected if it is received with thanksgiving. - 1 Timothy 4:4

Let's get together on Sunday, June 5th between the  9 and 11am services to brainstorm ideas to make All Saints' greener.

A Concert by the High School Vocal and Handbell Choirs
from Christ Church, United Methodist of Louisville, KY

Tuesday, June 7 at 7pm in the Church

On Tuesday afternoon, June 7, about 50 young people from Christ Church United Methodist in Louisville, Kentucky will offer a choir and handbell concert at 7pm in the church after they learn more about what we do on Tuesday nights at our food pantry and community kitchen and spend some time volunteering.

If you've never volunteered at our Tuesday night Food Pantry and Community Kitchen, this is the perfect opportunity to give it a try- you can volunteer and then hear some beautiful music afterwards.

For more information about volunteering, contact Liz Embler, volunteer coordinator for Ravenswood Community Services, the food pantry and community kitchen here at All Saints', at liz@ravenswoodcommunityservices.org.

For more information about the concert, contact Beau Surratt, Associate for Music and Administration, at beau@allsaintschicago.org.

ADULT FAITH EXPLORATIONS
"The Wheel of Awesome: Summer Salons"
Adult Faith Explorations is putting together a summer series called "The Wheel of Awesome:  Summer Salons."  We trust this will be an "awesome" time to gather, connect, share refreshments, and discuss spiritual topics of deep relevance to our lives.  Every Wednesday evening from 7-8:30 pm we will spin the wheel. In small groups we will discuss whichever topic the wheel lands on.  Some of the ideas proposed so far include:

Church 2.0: Faith in the digital age
Saving Grace:  Where do we express thanks for grace?
Bible Gone Wild: Bad girls of the bible
Sin:  What really counts?

Lots of room remains on the wheel and we need your help.  Following the 9 am and 11 am services on June 5th please take a few minutes to add your ideas to the blackboards located in the church.  If you can't wait that long, feel free to submit your topics by June 15th to Jeanne Wirpsa at 773-316-6936 or

Join All Saints' ECW for a summer of fellowship!
This All Saints' women's group will be hosting monthly fun activities for the ladies in the church community. Join us as we kick off on Thursday, June 17th for Mini Golf and Milkshakes! We will be meeting at 7:30 pm at Adventure Golf at 3459 Oakton Street in Skokie, and heading out for milkshakes after our triumphant round of putt-putt. Please RSVP to Elizabeth Shapiro at care@allsaintschicago.org.

Join Team RCS in the Rally to End Hunger
teamrcs
Mark your calendar for Saturday, June 25, when the Greater Chicago Food Depository steps off for its 26th annual lakefront Hunger Walk rally to raise money and awareness for hunger relief in our community.  Hunger Walk will take place at Soldier Field this year.  Registration begins at 7:00 a.m., and step-off is at 8:15 a.m.

Like last year, transportation will be provided from All Saints' to Soldier Field and back. Or, if you want to be in control of your own destiny, free parking is available at Soldier Field for Hunger Walkers.  Email Wendy for parking details.

100% of the funds raised by RCS walkers will go directly to the purchase of food for our Tuesday night Food Pantry and Community Kitchen.  In 2010, Team RCS raised more than $8,000 to feed our hungry neighbors, and we haven't had to write a check to the Greater Chicago Food Depository since then!  Click here to make an online donation to Team RCS, or to join Team RCS and create your own personal Hunger Walk fundraising page.

All walkers who walk with Team RCS and submit a waiver the day of the event - regardless of whether they raise money or not -- help earn credits to purchase food for our Tuesday night neighbors.  The more walkers we have, the more credits we earn.  Come walk with us to help end hunger in our community!  For more information, contact Wendy at Ravenswood Community Services at wendy@ravenswoodcommunityservices.org

Social Justice Film Festival

The Justice Circle will be hosting Friday night movies at 7pm in the church, complete with popcorn and pop (and you're free to bring your own beverages or snacks).

A Dot on the Globe, a Difference in the World...
...IN AFRICA
alumaalextuition
At the end of February, in little over an hour, $20,500 was raised from our kids bake goods auction in late February.  Working with Hilary Waldron and Polly Tangora, and approved by the kids, we have made distributions of the funds to the following:
  • $5,500 for the salaries of Dr. Paul and the mid-wife at the Renk Town Clinic;
  • $5,000 for tuition for students at Nile High School in Arua, Uganda;
  • $3,000 for fencing of the garden that supports the restaurant in N. Geiger run by St. Peter Parish/St. Barnaba (companion parish with All Saints');
  • $1,000 for bricks for the building of the new high school in Renk Town;
  • and $4,689 for the support and feeding of displaced peoples returning home after the South voted for independence from the North in January (this was the youth group's idea!).
An additional $4,800 was also sent out of the All Saints' annual operating budget to support the salaries of two Sudanese priests in Renk Diocese.  This combined total equals $23,989 for 2011.

Thanks again to all for your help in baking, organizing, buying, setting up and cleaning up!  We're making a huge difference in so many peoples lives half-way around the world!

Blessings,

Mama Connie
Baking Bread for Jesus

Here at All Saints' the bread we use for Communion is baked by people who are a part of our worshipping community. We are currently in need of a few more volunteers to help with this ministry.

Bread bakers commit to baking bread for one month out of the year (either baking a whole month's worth of bread at one time or baking for four weeks spread out over the course of the year). Months which currently need bakers are January, April, May, July and August.

If you're interested in helping with this ministry, please contact Nina Chinn at ninachinn@comcast.net or 773-561-2407 and she can give you all the information you need to get started.

Tidbits from Ravenswood Community Services

For all you fashionistas out there...

Did you see the awesome Ravenswood Run shirts this year?  You're in luck!  A limited quantity of official shirts are available for a modest donation. $5 gets you the much sought-after 100% cotton heather gray t-shirt (as seen on perennial volunteer celebrities such as Chad Spreen, Michelle Mayes and Ahn Gallagher), available in sizes S, M, L, and XL while quantities last.

$20 scores you the official yellow runner "technical" tee.  Wear it to train for next year's race (set for April 29, 2012).  Available in sizes S, M, L, and XL while quantities last.

Shirts will be for sale at the RCS volunteer check-in table on Tuesday nights.  To make other arrangements to score one of these fantastic fashion must-haves, email Wendy.

Can you donate your green thumb to help feed hungry neighbors?

Colleen McVeigh, a teacher at Ravenswood School, has won a grant from Green Corps to plant a community garden at the school.  Ms. McVeigh and her Garden Club students have offered to donate some of the garden's produce to RCS to use in our Tuesday night Food Pantry and Community Kitchen.

RCS is looking for one or two volunteers who can help Ms. McVeigh and her students tend the garden over the summer.  The commitment includes once-a-week watering, weeding and harvesting.  To volunteer or for more information, please contact Wendy at the RCS office at 773-769-0282 or by email.
