Dear Friends,
Thank you so very much for your wonderful generosity--we are moving steadily toward our goal of 100% participation in contributing to fix the hole in the North wall foundation. We have 60 families/individuals who have already made contributions of all sizes. We're hoping to increase participation to 100 individuals/families by Sunday.
Speaking of Sunday- it is YOUTH Sunday and Jeanne Em DuBose will be our preacher. She has an awesome sermon prepared so please come and revel in the depth of spirit our young people have to offer us.
Congratulations to Connie Wilson who was honored by our Bishop this past week as an outstanding leader in our diocese. Connie was specifically honored for her work and ministry with and for our friends in Sudan. So a great big shout out to Connie!
Gumbo Stomp--in spite of the weather--was a great success. Thanks to Joey Sylvester, Larry Dieckmann, Lucy Jenkins, Barb Dufford, Ruth Frey, Lynn Bowers, Caty and Mike Burke and everyone who helped to plan and who participated in the festivities! With your vision and tenacity we are making a difference in New Orleans.
If you'd like to really increase your knowledge of scripture, theology and history I encourage you to venture forth to the Education For Ministry (EFM) open house that will be held this Wednesday, May 25th at 7:00 in the Parish Hall. It's a great group of people who are committed to asking questions and seeking answers for the deeper questions regarding our faith. (For more information e-mail Ruth Frey at efm@allsaintschicago.org)
That's the news here from All Saints: our wall will be fixed, Spring will reveal herself (eventually), and of course, there is always the impending rapture to consider...
Blessings,
Bonnie

| Social Justice Film Festival | |
The Justice Circle will be hosting Friday night movies at 7pm in the church, complete with popcorn and pop (and you're free to bring your own beverages or snacks).
Friday, May 20th at 7pm:Little Town of Bethlehemhttp://littletownofbethlehem.org/about/Little Town of Bethlehem, a documentary film, follows the story of three men of three different faiths and their lives in Israel and Palestine. The story explores each man's choice of nonviolent action amidst a culture of overwhelming violence. The film examines the struggle to promote equality through nonviolent engagement in the midst of incredible violence that has dehumanized all sides. Sami's story begins as a young boy living in the Israeli-occupied West Bank; Yonatan's starts on an Israeli military base; and Ahmad's begins in a Palestinian refugee camp. All three men have had their lives threatened by members of their own communities as a result of their work. Sami, Yonatan, and Ahmad continue to embrace their common humanity and equality for all, daring to have the hope that peace in the Holy Land can be achieved through nonviolent struggle.

A Dot on the Globe, a Difference in the World... ...IN AFRICA | | At the end of February, in little over an hour, $20,500 was raised from our kids bake goods auction in late February. Working with Hilary Waldron and Polly Tangora, and approved by the kids, we have made distributions of the funds to the following: - $5,500 for the salaries of Dr. Paul and the mid-wife at the Renk Town Clinic;
- $5,000 for tuition for students at Nile High School in Arua, Uganda;
- $3,000 for fencing of the garden that supports the restaurant in N. Geiger run by St. Peter Parish/St. Barnaba (companion parish with All Saints');
- $1,000 for bricks for the building of the new high school in Renk Town;
- and $4,689 for the support and feeding of displaced peoples returning home after the South voted for independence from the North in January (this was the youth group's idea!).
An additional $4,800 was also sent out of the All Saints' annual operating budget to support the salaries of two Sudanese priests in Renk Diocese. This combined total equals $23,989 for 2011.Thanks again to all for your help in baking, organizing, buying, setting up and cleaning up! We're making a huge difference in so many peoples lives half-way around the world!Blessings, Mama Connie |
Thursday, June 2, 7 pm Tweet if You ♥ Jesus: Practicing Church in the Digital Reformation Lecture, Discussion and Book Signing |
| |
The next Christian Reformation is happening on Facebook and Twitter.
Social media offer powerful tools for the practice of Christian faith and a great challenge to modern understandings of what it means to be a friend, a spiritual companion, or a member of a community. What does it mean to 'love your neighbor' in a world in which a 'friend' might as easily be the kid from down the street you grew up with as a woman in Botswana whom you've never seen in person and only know in the context of Facebook? Join Elizabeth Drescher, author of the new book, Tweet if You ♥ Jesus: Practicing Church in the Digital Reformation, for a discussion about how these critical issues are grounded in the histories of Christianity and mass communications. "We must travel through this landscape on its own terms," Drescher reminds us, "open throughout to the possibility that God just might be doing an entirely new thing among us-140 characters at a time."
Dr. Drescher will be available to sign her book, Tweet if You ♥ Jesus, which will be available for purchase at this event.
Elizabeth Drescher is an educator, scholar, writer and speaker on Christian spirituality, with an emphasis on the spiritual practices of ordinary believers and seekers today and in the past. She holds a PhD in Christian Spirituality from the Graduate Theological Union and an MA in Systematic Theology from Duquesne University. Dr. Drescher teaches in the undergraduate program in Religious Studies and the graduate program in Pastoral Ministry at Santa Clara University. Dr. Drescher is a regular contributor to the highly regarded online magazine, Religion Dispatchesand a well-known preacher, conference speaker, and workshop leader for churches, seminaries, colleges and universities, and religious organizations.

We are hosting a babysitting night for children ages 0 - 12, in the sanctuary and reading room areas. We will have games, activities, and movies, sure to be a fun time for all! We are asking for a $10 donation per family per hour - all money raised will go to support the church operating budget.
WE ALSO NEED VOLUNTEERS! Have you completed the "Keeping God's Children Safe" training? Please e-mail Christy Drackett ( christydrackett@gmail.com) or Rick Lumsden ( rlumsden@eb.com) if you can assist with childcare on the 3rd.

Recycling and Caring for the Environment at All Saints' A Discussion on June 5 at 10am in the Reading Room
Do we have time to reduce/reuse or recycle? Do we not have time? Does it take more effort to recycle than just to throw it out? When a recycling plan is started - will we use it? Can our collective actions lead to reducing the volume of "trash"?
Let's get together on June 5 between the 9 and 11 services to discuss about how we can make care for the environment more a part of our community life here at All Saints'.

| Baking Bread for Jesus | | Here at All Saints' the bread we use for Communion is baked by people who are a part of our worshipping community. We are currently in need of a few more volunteers to help with this ministry. Bread bakers commit to baking bread for one month out of the year (either baking a whole month's worth of bread at one time or baking for four weeks spread out over the course of the year). Months which currently need bakers are January, April, May, July and August.
If you're interested in helping with this ministry, please contact Nina Chinn at ninachinn@comcast.net or 773-561-2407 and she can give you all the information you need to get started.

Tuesday, June 7 at 7pm in the Church

On Tuesday afternoon, June 7, about 50 young people from Christ Church United Methodist in Louisville, Kentucky will offer a choir and handbell concert at 7pm in the church after they learn more about what we do on Tuesday nights at our food pantry and community kitchen and spend some time volunteering.
If you've never volunteered at our Tuesday night Food Pantry and Community Kitchen, this is the perfect opportunity to give it a try- you can volunteer and then hear some beautiful music afterwards.
For more information about volunteering, contact Liz Embler, volunteer coordinator for Ravenswood Community Services, the food pantry and community kitchen here at All Saints', at liz@ravenswoodcommunityservices.org. | Spring is for Singing!
Spring is the perfect time to try singing with the choir. With about 7 weeks left in the choir season, you can get a little taste of the fun you can have. Our 9 o'clock choir rehearses at 8am and sings for the 9am service each Sunday and our 11 o'clock choir rehearses on Wednesday evenings from 7:30-9pm (with a 10:15am warmup on Sunday morning) and sings for the 11am service each Sunday.
Additionally, the All Saints' All Ages Choir sings once a month at 9:00 service and rehearses from 9:30 to 10:15 a.m. on the Saturday before, and at 8:30 a.m. in the Parish Hall on Sundays the group is singing. The All Ages Choir is open to children ages 5 and up, their parents or other accompanying adults, unaccompanied young people ages 12 and up and anyone who likes the idea of a one-month-at-a-time commitment. The 9:00 service Adult Choir joins with the All Ages Choir when they sing. The next All Ages choir rehearsal will be on Saturday, May 21, singing on Youth Sunday, May 22.
Finally, on Pentecost, June 12, the last regular choir Sunday for the season, we'll have a combined choirs Sunday. At the 9am service, the All Ages choir, 9 o'clock choir and 11 o'clock choir will sing, and at the 11am service, the 9 o'clock and 11 o'clock choirs will join together. If you're looking for a one-time opportunity to try out singing, June 12 is the day.
For more information about any of these opportunities, give Beau Surratt a call at 773-561-0111 or send him an email at beau@allsaintschicago.org.
