Dear Friends,

This Sunday we'll begin Holy Week; the seven days preceding Easter when we try to imagine what it must have been like for Jesus the week he chose to die on the cross.  At All Saints' we offer worship services every day of this upcoming week.  Each day, each worship service invites us to enter into a different aspect of Jesus' life.

On Palm Sunday (8,9,11am) we will remember Christ's triumphal entry into Jerusalem, an entrance that was viewed by the ruling religious and political authorities of the day with great fear and dismay.

On Monday (7pm) we'll have plenty of quiet meditative time to reflect on those times in our own life when we have felt alone or forgotten.

On Tuesday (7pm) we'll have the opportunity to ask for anointing and prayers for healing.

On Wednesday (7pm), through a series of contemporary readings we'll be invited to reflect on our complicity in such systemic sins as war, environmental degradation, and consumerism.

On Thursday we'll gather at 6:00 pm in the parish hall to share a simple soup supper and remember the night before Jesus died.  Following our dinner we'll wash one another's hands or feet and then move to the sanctuary to pray as some of us strip away all of the ornaments and decorations of our sacred space. We will end our time in complete darkness.

Following the service you may sign up for confession or conversation with me from 9 to 11 that evening.  Or for confession or conversation with Fran from 1 to 3 on Friday afternoon.  We'll also have the option of staying, praying all night long in either the sanctuary or the Reading Room.

On Good Friday morning, we will begin this most solemn day with Morning Prayer at 7:00.  At noon we'll have the Stations of the Cross.  From 1 to 3 the sanctuary will be open for prayer and meditation and at 8:00 in the Evening our young people will lead our evening Remembrance of Christ's Death.

On Saturday morning we'll have a simple service at 9:00.  Then we'll jump ahead for just a moment with our Community Easter Egg Hunt (rain or shine) from 10:00 am to Noon.  At 8:00 on Saturday evening we will gather around the sacred flame to begin our Easter Vigil.  This amazing worship service will offer each of us a glimpse into our Holy Scriptures and God's saving works in a most memorable fashion.  (Bring Bells to ring.)

Then on Easter Sunday morning at 8,9 and 11 o'clock we'll remember and celebrate Christ's life-giving resurrection from the grave (Again bring those bells to ring).

So there is much to take in, many worship services to choose from.  Mostly it is a time for us to take seriously how we are complicit in the ills of this world AND to take equally seriously how through Christ's death and resurrection we now, need never settle for anything less than life and life in abundance.

I look forward to seeing all of you this week.  We'll have child care throughout the evening on Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

All my best,

Bonnie

Volunteer for the Ravenswood Run!

On Sunday, May 1, thousands of neighbors will converge on the Chicago intersection of Wilson and Hermitage Avenues for a morning of running, socializing and community-building that raises funds to help neighbors in need. Proceeds from the Ravenswood Run benefit Ravenswood Community Services' local hunger relief efforts and the student health centers at Amundsen and Lake View high schools.

We need your help to make this race a success. Sign up to volunteer now by filling out this form!

Neighborhood Leafleting (Mon 04/25, Tue 04/26, Fri 04/29, Sat 04/30)

As part of our community outreach, we will be posting flyers and door hangers along the course to inform neighbors about our race and alert them to the parking regulations for race day. We will meet in the parish hall at 9:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. each day.

In-Store Registration and Packet Pickup (Thu 04/28, Fri 04/29, Sat 04/30)

We need volunteers to help with registration and packet pickup at the Lincoln Square Fleet Feet store in the days leading up to the race. Shifts are from 9:45am - 1:00pm, 1:00pm - 4:00pm, or 4:00 - 8:00pm. In some cases we can split shifts.

Race Day (Sun 05/01)

We need more than 200 volunteers on race morning to help set up, register runners, hand out goody bags, check gear, act as course marshals, serve refreshments and assist with recycling, clean up and signage removal. Most jobs start at 6 or 7 a.m. and all shifts will be finished by 11 a.m.

Contact Nicole Donnelly at raverun@allsaintschicago.org or 773-539-1020 with volunteer questions. Race registration and info can be found at www.ravenswoodrun.com

Can you help take the plastic off our windows?

If so, join Ahn Gallagher this Sunday after the 11am service for a plastic removal party in the church.

Holy Week and Easter Services at All Saints'

Join us for the "high holy days" of the Christian year beginning with Palm Sunday on April 17. Each week between now and Easter, we'll highlight a few of the services to take place. The full list of services can be found here.

Maundy Thursday All-Night Vigil

Many of us stay to pray after the Maundy Thursday service.  The church will be open and staffed for an all night vigil, with tools for meditation available in the reading room to help guide our reflections and prayer. The vigil will end with Morning Prayer at 7:00 am on Friday.

Good Friday

April 22; 7am, Noon and 8pm

We remember Christ's suffering and death with Morning Prayer at 7, stations of the cross at noon, and an evening prayer service at 8pm. The Good Friday evening service is a meditation on Christ's suffering as we explore themes of injustice in our world.

Holy Saturday Liturgy                                                                                            April 23, 9am

On this day, as in no other, we are invited into the most profound silence of the life of God, whose Son, "of one being with the Father," lay buried in a tomb. Today, for this service, we speak from the emptiness of death as we know it and as the very Being of God experienced it.

Community Easter Egg Hunt
Saturday, April 23, 10am-Noon

Rain or shine--bring your kids and your friends and your friend's kids.

Easter Vigil
Saturday, April 23, 8pm

Our community gathers around the altar fire to hear the stories of God's work in our world throughout history and in the present. We baptize and welcome new members into our community, and we celebrate the Resurrection with joy. Bring bells to ring!

Easter Sunday
April 24, 8, 9 and 11am

This festival Eucharist proclaims the risen Christ, the fulfillment of hope, the triumph of justice, and the immortality of love. A sparkling Easter brunch lasts from 10am until the afternoon. Bring bells to ring!

Staff Schedules and Space Use

(or...the stuff you've been looking forward to reading.)

Dear Friends,

Following Margaret McCamant's retirement and Beau Surratt's appointment as Associate for Music and Administration, we thought we'd give everyone an update on what our weekly schedules will typically be beginning on May 1. If you plan to stop by to take care of something during the week at the church, it is always best to call and make sure someone will be around or to make an appointment. All of us have meetings and errands that take us away from the All Saints' campus from time to time, even during our regular work times.

Also, if you've been around the building during the week lately, you've probably noticed that meeting space is at a premium. With all of the All Saints' and RCS events taking place in a typical week, the daily space needs of the staff and the outside groups who use space in our building, it has become extremely important to have ALL meetings and events on the church calendar, especially if you intend to occupy a space at the church for any amount of time. Whether you've got a big event to schedule or just a meeting with one or two people, please email Beau at beau@allsaintschicago.org and make sure that your event/meeting has space reserved for it. Doing that will help make all of our lives a little easier.

Blessings,
Bonnie and the All Saints'/RCS Staff

Fiesta at Iglesia Cristo Rey
fiestaAs a part of our Mexico outreach, we are in the process of developing activities we can share with Iglesia Cristo Rey, a Hispanic Episcopal church on Devon here in Chicago. Right now we are working on:  ESL classes and joint activities for our youth groups and young adults.

Cristo Rey will be celebrating its annual Spring Festival on Saturday, April 30.  They will be serving up Latin food, music and fun beginning at 6:30 pm. Join us for an evening of fun sharing food and fellowship with our new friends there.  Let Karen or Dave Howe (mexico@allsaintschicago.org) know if you'd like to come so that we can tell them how many to expect.

Gumbo Stomp 3
Saturday May 14, 7-11pm
gs3
GET READY TO STOMP, shout, or just enjoy the music!

Saturday, May 14, 2011, 7 - 11 pm, is the date for our third annual Gumbo Stomp!, a Cajun/zydeco dance party to raise money for our rebuild efforts in New Orleans post-Katrina and for the first time, help save the coastal wetlands. Live music by the terrific Midway Ramblers Cajun Band, dance instruction (optional!), and yummy bread pudding are all included in your ticket price of $25. Beverages and various tempting flavors of Zapp's (planet's best potato chips, made in Louisiana) will again be for sale.  Part of the proceeds will go towards saving the wetlands, which are essential for the survival of coastal Louisiana and New Orleans. This allocation is inspired in part by a presentation we heard last October on our work trip to NOLA (All Saints' 10th trip). Diane Huhn, volunteer coordinator for Bayou Grace, gave us insight into how that organization is advocating for change and assisting families in southern Louisiana who are most directly affected by the unnatural land loss that continues daily. We hope to  do some environmental

volunteer work on our next trip, September 30-October 8, 2011. Gumbo Stomp tickets are available online here! For more information or to volunteer, email gumbostomp@allsaintschicago.org
