Dear Friends,

I'm back safe and sound--with pictures and video to share.  To avoid having to relive my week at Land's End (literally) avoid looking me in the eye!

I am so very excited about the start of our new pastoral care ministry. Please read on to find out about the good work that Fran Holliday, Elizabeth Shapiro and others are doing for our community.

I'll be preaching this Sunday and I'm looking forward to seeing all of you.

All the Best,
Bonnie
British Canoe Union (BCU) 4 star leader & Level 3 Sea Coach

Dear Friends,

I am very happy to announce that this weekend we are officially launching the "All Saints' Care Ministry."   Caring for one another and reaching out to all people in our community is an important part of our life together.  The Care Ministry is a way in which we can offer more help and support to one another and to all people, be they newcomers or folks who have been here for a long time.

The All Saints' Care Ministry Team will coordinate support for those in need: during an illness, birth of a child, a death in the family or during other times of transition and stress.

These support services include Love on Wheels (rides to the doctor, to church, on errands) and Love on a Plate (delivery of meals for a time to you and /or your family).  We will gladly assist you in setting up an online care calendar so that others may sign up to help provide rides and meals when you need them.  Additionally, if you are homebound and would like communion, anointing for healing or a pastoral visit, our Pastoral Chaplain John Sattelmaier is available.  For all of these services you may email care@allsaintschicago.org.

I am also happy to let you know that our Care Ministry Coordinator Elizabeth Shapiro has begun a New Parents' (Play Group).  Meet and connect with new parents (and some veteran ones) to chat about navigating life in the city with a small child.  To find out more about this group email Elizabeth at care@allsaintschicago.org.

With this new and awesome ministry comes an opportunity for everyone to get involved.  If you can help provide an occasional meal or ride to someone in need please sign up and be part of our database.  We will contact you as requests come in.  I would like to thank those who have already volunteered to provide this support.  Many more people are needed!!

I also want to thank Elizabeth Shapiro, our Care Ministry Coordinator, for all her hard work organizing this ministry.  Together we will be working to help coordinate support for all members of our community.

Blessings,

Rev. Fran Holliday

ADULT FAITH EXPLORATIONS LENTEN PROGRAM:
"Ashes to Ashes: A Body-Centered Faith"
ashes

Sunday, April 3 at St. James Cathedral

"A Life-Affirming, This-Worldly Christianity, Hidden in Plain Sight"

with Rita Nakashima Brock and Rebecca Parker
Evensong, "God as Beauty:" 4 pm
Lecture: 5 to 6 pm; Book Signing and Reception: 6 to 6:30 pm
St. James Cathedral, 65 E. Huron Street, Chicago.

For the first millennium of the faith, no images of Jesus dead existed in Christian art. Instead, churches filled their spaces with images of the risen Christ who hosted the Eucharist feast of abundant life and paradise in this world. Join Rita Nakashima Brock and Rebecca Parker to explore how early Christian communities understood salvation and shaped themselves as the body of Christ that fed the hungry, healed the sick, and resisted imperial violence and oppression. More information about this event here: http://www.seabury.edu/events/parker-brock-lecture-chicago.html

Monday, April 4 at Grace Episcopal Church in Oak Park:

Saving Paradise: How Christianity Traded Love of this World for Crucifixion and Empire

with Rita Nakashima Brock and Rebecca Parker

Monday, April 4; 10 am to 3:30 pm

Grace Episcopal Church, 924 Lake Street, Oak Park, Illinois

How did Christianity go from love of this world as God's paradise to atonement and Holy War? The imperial violence of the 9th-12th centuries changed Christianity's understanding of salvation and recast the Eucharist as a ritual with sacred violence at its heart. In doing so, the Western church justified launching holy wars of conquest and the African slave trade. But by understanding history, we can recover Christianity's vision of a life-affirming, this-worldly, justice-seeking faith whose rituals of baptism and Eucharist appreciate beauty and attune people to the Spirit in creation.  More information here:

Saturday, April 9; 1-3pm in the Parish Hall:  Walking the Labyrinth

For those interested in walking a labyrinth with All Saints' on Saturday April 9th, we have decided that we will in fact be staying here and doing the walk in our very own parish hall, starting at 1 pm. All are welcome to attend even if you have no idea what a labyrinth is! The event is a great introduction for those interested in learning about an ancient ritual of spiritual reflection and should be a wonderful time for reflection during our journey through Lent.

Sunday, April 10, 10:15-11 in the Parish Hall: Exploring Body-Centered Prayer

Join parishioner Meggie Smith and Rev. Bonnie Perry for body-centered prayer and an exploration of our own potential to foster healing in our loved ones.  We will learn and practice simple, hands-on healing techniques for balancing the body's energy and supporting a sense of well-being.

Buildings and Grounds Meeting
April 9 at 10:30am in the Parish Office

Spring has sprung (or is trying to, anyway), and Buildings & Grounds will meet on April 9 at 10:30 (after Market Pantry) to make gardening plans and set a gardening date.
Like last year, we'll ask for plants you can share from your gardens and hope to see kids, new-gardeners and people who just like to dig in the dirt.

On April 9, we'll go over the usual, including catching up with the current maintenance being done by our Building Manager, Ron Young, and addressing any issues with the buildings.  We'll have an update on the capital campaign and status on the north foundation work.  If you can't make the meeting, but want to garden, please email Nancy Lischer at buildingsandgrounds@allsaintschicago.org

Holy Week and Easter Services at All Saints'

Join us for the "high holy days" of the Christian year beginning with Palm Sunday on April 17. Each week between now and Easter, we'll highlight a few of the services to take place. The full list of services can be found here.

Palm Sunday
April 17, 9 and 11am

On Palm Sunday we celebrate Jesus' triumphal entry into Jerusalem, when the crowds expected Jesus to rule as a just king. We wave palm fronds and streamers, we have stilt-walkers and jugglers, and our procession stops traffic on Wilson Avenue! But after this show of hope and joy, we enter the church to hear a dramatic reading of the Passion story.

Holy Monday
April 18, 7pm

Save me, God...I sink in the muddy depths...(Psalm 69)
Despite all we read and her about Jesus' miraculous presence among us, we still seem to be "in over our heads." We will pray together using language and images from Scripture and our lives to set the stage for Christ's saving work.

Read the full list of services here.

SOCIAL JUSTICE at All Saints'
Justice Circle Meeting on Monday
The next meeting of the Justice Circle will be Monday, April 4th at 7:30pm outside of Bonnie and Beau's office. All are welcome and encouraged to come! We'll be discussing the film festival, the "We Are One" week of labor action, the situations in Sudan, Japan, and Syria, and more. If you have any questions, contact Jack at jack@allsaintschicago.org.

Lenten Social Justice Film Festival
The film festival continues this Friday at 7:00pm, celebrating April Fools' Day with A Day Without a Mexican, in which California wakes up and not a single Latino is left in the state. They have all inexplicably dissappeared-- chaos, tragedy, and comedy quickly ensue. We will bring pop and popcorn, and we invite you to bring a snack or drink to share. The festival continues on 4/8 with At the River I Stand and on 4/15 with Waiting for Superman.

Special Film Festival Screening: At the River I Stand
As part of both the Lenten Film Festival and the We Are One week of labor justice commemorating the anniversary of the death of Dr. King, the Justice Circle will be screening At the River I Stand on Friday, April 8th at 7:00pm. it is a powerful documentary about the Memphis sanitation worker strike, Dr. King's last campaign. You can check out the film trailer here, and check out the event pages here and here. Please come and invite your friends!

We Are One Labor Rally
On April 9th at 1:00pm, the Chicago Federation of Labor will be hosting a rally for workers' rights at 1:00pm (tentatively at Daley Plaza). The rally is part of a larger week of action commemorating the death of Dr. King and to demonstrate solidarity with workers in Wisconsin and Ohio. For more information about the rally, see the AFL-CIO webite here. For more information about the We Are One campaign, visit the website here.

Learn more about the All Saints' Justice Circle here.

You are invited to join in a celebration of Solemn Communion

Saturday, April 9, 2011 at 3pm here at All Saints'

The Eucharist will begin at 3pm with a short reception following to honor the children of this year's group.

Solemn Communion  offers children the opportunity to consider in a more serious way what it means to receive the Eucharist.  Although in the Episcopal Church children receive the bread and wine from the time of baptism, as they grow older they are able to examine the meaning of this gift more deeply.

This year 12 of our children have participated in the six-week preparation for this ceremony:  Daniel Roberts, Elizabeth Rutledge, Linnea Jones, Maryjayne Allen, Michael Hatzis, Morgan Kingsley, Morgan Mankowski, Naomi Mayes, Nora Lumsden, Olivia Fergus-Brummer, Sarah Palmentera-Reid, and Zachary Gee.

CHILDREN at All Saints'

"Palm Saturday" Workshop

April 16th from 10am-2pm

Children from 4 to 9 are invited to join in a "Palm Saturday" workshop at All Saints' Church in preparation for Holy Week Saturday, April 16th from 10:00am to 2:00pm.

The day will include banner making, singing, and simple crafts. There will be a prayer walk with reflection on the events  of Holy Week.  Lunch will be served with prayers and songs as we remember the evening Jesus and his friends celebrated Passover together.

Friends and neighbors (4 to 9 years-old) are welcome to join us. However, the group will be limited to 25 children so please reserve.  Parents of 4 year-olds should plan on attending with their child for the first part of the morning (10:00 to 11:30).  We ask for a $5.00 fee per child to cover the cost of materials and lunch.

If your child would like to attend, please R.S.V.P. to Polly Tangora (773-878-7118) by Sunday, April 10 so that we can plan for food and materials.  We will not be able to accept reservations after Tuesday, April 12th.

Music News from All Saints'
Our own Jae Hoesley will be leading choir rehearsals and our Sunday morning music April 3, 10 and 17.

The 11 O'Clock Choir has resumed rehearsals: Wednesdays at 7:45pm.

The 9 O'Clock Choir rehearses on Sunday mornings at 8am in the Parish Hall.

Jackie Totsch and Jean Lyles, respected musicians in the Diocese of Chicago, will be with us to play for the Easter Vigil and Easter Sunday, respectively.

On May 1, Robert "Beau" Surratt will become our new Associate for Music and Administration.  Many of you will recognize his name as Beau is currently our Parish Administrator.  Beau will be leaving his Sunday ministry with St. Elisabeth's in Glencoe and joining us for more than full-time employment.  I could not be more excited about this.  We held a full open search and the committee (consisting of Andrea Knepper, Julie Donalek, Juleigh Ruby, Colby Maddox, George Thiruvathukal and diocesan musician Dent Davidson) and I were in agreement that Beau is the right person for this ministry.  I am delighted that he applied and excited that he will now be with us on Sundays as well as days in the week.  I'll let you know more about his schedule in future notes.

Margaret McCamant Photo Album Books for Sale
Several people have asked about ordering copies of the album we created for Margaret McCamant.  You can order copies from Blurb.com here.

To have a copy just like the one we gave Margaret, select the Hardcover Imagewrap option (the third option).

Note from Helen Poot: I've never ordered Softcover,so I can't tell you what it would look like.  I would not order Hardcover, dust jacket, as I did not create the inside flaps (unless you don't care about that!).

If you have any questions, please contact Helen Poot at realityfair@ravenswoodcommunityservices.org.

Palm Sunday Readers Needed

Reading the story of the Passion of Christ aloud is an integral part of the Palm Sunday service.  Like we did last year, All Saints will have a "cast" of readers telling the story.  If you are interested in participating in this year's reading on Sunday, April 17, please email Juleigh Ruby at jmruby23@aol.com.  Be sure to type PALM SUNDAY READING in the Subject Line.

Thank You from Margaret McCamant
margaretfarewell

Dear fellow All Saints' parishioners,

I'm still replaying in my memory the wonderful day that March 6 was for me. Thank you to everyone for all you did to make that retirement Sunday so memorable. I am grateful to all of the singers who worked on the anthem that I chose and then cooked up two wonderful musical surprises for me. Thank you for organizing and attending the after-church party with its All Saints' version of high tea. All your moving and kind words will be with me forever. I treasure the All Saints gifts from all of you: the mounted square of late-but-not-lamented sanctuary carpet and the amazing book of photos of my tenure made so precious with all your loving notes. My knitter's heart is proud to have fiber-providing animals donated in my name through the Heifer Project, and I look forward to using your gift of a combined prayer book/hymnal when I'm back singing with you all on Sunday mornings. Choir or congregation? Nine or eleven o'clock service? Those are decisions still to be made as I figure out how to be retired and how to structure my weeks in a new way. With just one not-at-All-Saints Sunday under my belt, I can tell you that it felt odd to not be where I've been most weeks for 20 years and I missed you all. As you can imagine, though, it was a distinct pleasure to ignore the change to daylight saving time on March 13 and to simply get up when I woke up!

Gumbo Stomp 3
Saturday May 14, 7-11pm
gs3
GET READY TO STOMP, shout, or just enjoy the music!

Saturday, May 14, 2011, 7 - 11 pm, is the date for our third annual Gumbo Stomp!, a Cajun/zydeco dance party to raise money for our rebuild efforts in New Orleans post-Katrina and for the first time, help save the coastal wetlands. Live music by the terrific Midway Ramblers Cajun Band, dance instruction (optional!), and yummy bread pudding are all included in your ticket price of $25. Beverages and various tempting flavors of Zapp's (planet's best potato chips, made in Louisiana) will again be for sale.  Part of the proceeds will go towards saving the wetlands, which are essential for the survival of coastal Louisiana and New Orleans. This allocation is inspired in part by a presentation we heard last October on our work trip to NOLA (All Saints' 10th trip). Diane Huhn, volunteer coordinator for Bayou Grace, gave us insight into how that organization is advocating for change and assisting families in southern Louisiana who are most directly affected by the unnatural land loss that continues daily. We hope to  do some environmental

volunteer work on our next trip, September 30-October 8, 2011. Gumbo Stomp tickets are available online here! For more information or to volunteer, email gumbostomp@allsaintschicago.org

The next pre-baptismal counseling sessions are on Saturday, April 9 or April 16 at 9am.

Ravenswood Run
Sunday, May 1
On Sunday, May 1, thousands of neighbors will converge on the Chicago intersection of Wilson and Hermitage Avenues for a morning of running, socializing and community-building that raises funds to help neighbors in need.  Proceeds from the Ravenswood Run benefit Ravenswood Community Services' local hunger relief efforts and the student health centers at Amundsen and Lake View high schools.  Register now for the 15th Ravenswood Run 5k.

Do you have a prayer request? Will you pray for others?
What are we doing when we say prayers of thanksgiving and intercessions for others in church? Is praying at home in private different from praying together in church? In the intentional act of naming the joys and concerns of others, we become present to those for whom we pray. The "Prayers of the People" is a time in our service to say aloud the names of people who have asked for prayers. It doesn't matter if you know them. It doesn't matter if two or ten or one hundred people are speaking at the same time. This cacophony of prayer is heard by God. The intercessions we pray in church provide a tangible and powerful way for each one of us to partner with God in compassion, mercy, and justice.

To add a name to the Parish Prayer List (names listed in the church bulletin, and the weekly e-mail announcements) please enter them at prayerlist@allsaintschicago.org
