Dear Friends,

As we come into the last week of March, I am reminded of all the many ministries, and activities we have going on at the church.  I hope that you will consider attending some of these events and offerings and connect with others in this community of faith.

During Lent the Justice Circle is hosting a Friday Night Movie at 7:00 p.m., complete with popcorn and beverages.  The Inquirers' Class continues to meet on Wednesday nights for those interested in learning more about the Episcopal Church and All Saints.   This class has four more sessions and meets in the parish hall at 7:00 p.m., beginning with a light soup supper. Please sign up with our Parish Administrator at beau@allsaintschicago.org

The Adult Faith Explorations group continues with their Lenten program series between the 9:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. services: "Ashes to Ashes: a Body Centered Faith."  This Sunday the Rev. Carol Reese, who is a chaplain at Cook County Hospital, will reflect on Jesus' healing narratives in light of her work at the hospital's trauma unit.

In addition to all of these offerings, we have lots of volunteer opportunities for all ages.  "Family Night" at the food pantry is this Tuesday night from 5:30-7:30 p.m.   Children of all ages, accompanied by an adult, are welcome.  We also have our next All Saints' Café coming up Sunday April 3 from 5-7 p.m.  Volunteers are needed to help cook, clean, serve and greet our neighbors in need.  This is a wonderful opportunity for our neighbors to experience a five star restaurant dining experience.   Please contact Liz Embler (liz@ravenswoodcommunityservices.org) to volunteer at the Café or at our Tuesday night pantry and meal program.  Volunteers of all ages are welcome.

If you are a volunteer or are interested in volunteering with our meal and pantry program, you are invited to attend the Volunteer Steering Committee meeting this Tuesday night at 7:30 p.m. in the parish hall.  Food and beverages will be made available.  The last half of our meeting will be a discussion regarding the possibility of moving our pantry to a "Choice Model" and away from the "Pre-Set Bag Model" that we currently use.  The Greater Chicago Food Depository has asked us to engage in this conversion and discuss the feasibility of making this change.  Please come and help us think this through, so that we may determine if this kind of shift is something we want to do and if it is possible.

I invite you to participate in some of these offerings and opportunities.  All are welcome!

Bonnie is out town kayaking the English Channel.  She will return to the office on Wednesday.  Please don't hesitate to contact the office if you need assistance or for a pastoral emergency.

See You Sunday,

Rev. Fran Holliday

Lenten Social Justice Film Festival
Friday Nights in Lent at 7pm

Friday, March 25 - "North Country"

What Josey Aimes wants is a decent job so she can put food on the table and take care of her kids. What she gets is threatened, insulted, ogled, fondled, belittled, attacked and called filthy names. "Take it like a man," her callous male boss says. Instead, she takes it like a human being - and fights back. Charlize Theron portrays Josey in North Country, the searing story of women who broke the gender barrier laboring in hazardous Minnesota iron mines... and broke legal ground with the nation's first class-action sexual-harassment lawsuit. Frances McDormand, Sissy Spacek, Woody Harrelson and Sean Bean star with Theron in this emotionally explosive tale of taking on the odds to achieve what everya range of abuse while working as a miner filed and won the landmark 1984 lawsuit.

Friday, April 1 - "A Day Without a Mexican"

One day California wakes up and not a single Latino is left in the state. They have all inexplicably dissappeared-- chaos, tragedy, and comedy quickly ensue.

Music News from All Saints'
Thank you to Steve Edfors who has been with us at the organ and piano on Sunday mornings for the past three weeks. This Sunday, March 27, will be his last Sunday with us during this interim period.

Our own Jae Hoesley will be leading choir rehearsals and our Sunday morning music April 3, 10 and 17.

The 11 O'Clock Choir will resume rehearsals this coming Wednesday, March 30 at 7:45pm.

Jackie Totsch and Jean Lyles, respected musicians in the Diocese of Chicago, will be with us to play for the Easter Vigil and Easter Sunday, respectively.

On May 1, Robert "Beau" Surratt will become our new Associate for Music and Administration.  Many of you will recognize his name as Beau is currently our Parish Administrator.  Beau will be leaving his Sunday ministry with St. Elisabeth's in Glencoe and joining us for more than full-time employment.  I could not be more excited about this.  We held a full open search and the committee (consisting of Andrea Knepper, Julie Donalek, Juleigh Ruby, Colby Maddox, George Thiruvathukal and diocesan musician Dent Davidson) and I were in agreement that Beau is the right person for this ministry.  I am delighted that he applied and excited that he will now be with us on Sundays as well as days in the week.  I'll let you know more about his schedule in future notes.

- Bonnie

ADULT FAITH EXPLORATIONS LENTEN PROGRAM:
"Ashes to Ashes: A Body-Centered Faith"
ashes

Sunday, March 27, 10:15-11 in Parish Hall:

"Violence and Healing: In Scripture and In Our World"

Rev. Carol Reese will reflect on Jesus' healing narratives in light of her experience as a chaplain at Stroger Hospital's Trauma Department working with patients who are victims of violence.

Sunday, April 3 at St. James Cathedral

"A Life-Affirming, This-Worldly Christianity, Hidden in Plain Sight"

with Rita Nakashima Brock and Rebecca Parker
Evensong, "God as Beauty:" 4 pm
Lecture: 5 to 6 pm; Book Signing and Reception: 6 to 6:30 pm
St. James Cathedral, 65 E. Huron Street, Chicago.

For the first millennium of the faith, no images of Jesus dead existed in Christian art. Instead, churches filled their spaces with images of the risen Christ who hosted the Eucharist feast of abundant life and paradise in this world. Join Rita Nakashima Brock and Rebecca Parker to explore how early Christian communities understood salvation and shaped themselves as the body of Christ that fed the hungry, healed the sick, and resisted imperial violence and oppression. Margaret McCamant Photo Album Books for Sale
Several people have asked about ordering copies of the album we created for Margaret McCamant.  You can order copies from Blurb.com here.

To have a copy just like the one we gave Margaret, select the Hardcover Imagewrap option (the third option).

Note from Helen Poot: I've never ordered Softcover,so I can't tell you what it would look like.  I would not order Hardcover, dust jacket, as I did not create the inside flaps (unless you don't care about that!).

If you have any questions, please contact Helen Poot at realityfair@ravenswoodcommunityservices.org.

Donate

If you'd like to make a contribution toward our Easter flowers there are several ways to do so:

1. Donate online here.

3. Put your contribution, cash or check, in one of the envelopes that will be able to be found in the pews beginning on Sunday, March 27 and put the envelope in the offering plate.

If you'd like to make your contribution in honor or memory of loved ones and to have that information included in the Easter bulletins, send Beau an email at beau@allsaintschicago.org with the information. Thank You from Margaret McCamant
margaretfarewell

Dear fellow All Saints' parishioners,

I'm still replaying in my memory the wonderful day that March 6 was for me. Thank you to everyone for all you did to make that retirement Sunday so memorable. I am grateful to all of the singers who worked on the anthem that I chose and then cooked up two wonderful musical surprises for me. Thank you for organizing and attending the after-church party with its All Saints' version of high tea. All your moving and kind words will be with me forever. I treasure the All Saints gifts from all of you: the mounted square of late-but-not-lamented sanctuary carpet and the amazing book of photos of my tenure made so precious with all your loving notes. My knitter's heart is proud to have fiber-providing animals donated in my name through the Heifer Project, and I look forward to using your gift of a combined prayer book/hymnal when I'm back singing with you all on Sunday mornings. Choir or congregation? Nine or eleven o'clock service? Those are decisions still to be made as I figure out how to be retired and how to structure my weeks in a new way. With just one not-at-All-Saints Sunday under my belt, I can tell you that it felt odd to not be where I've been most weeks for 20 years and I missed you all. As you can imagine, though, it was a distinct pleasure to ignore the change to daylight saving time on March 13 and to simply get up when I woke up!

Gumbo Stomp 3
Saturday May 14, 7-11pm
gs3
GET READY TO STOMP, shout, or just enjoy the music!

Saturday, May 14, 2011, 7 - 11 pm, is the date for our third annual Gumbo Stomp!, a Cajun/zydeco dance party to raise money for our rebuild efforts in New Orleans post-Katrina and for the first time, help save the coastal wetlands. Live music by the terrific Midway Ramblers Cajun Band, dance instruction (optional!), and yummy bread pudding are all included in your ticket price of $25. Beverages and various tempting flavors of Zapp's (planet's best potato chips, made in Louisiana) will again be for sale.  Part of the proceeds will go towards saving the wetlands, which are essential for the survival of coastal Louisiana and New Orleans. This allocation is inspired in part by a presentation we heard last October on our work trip to NOLA (All Saints' 10th trip). Diane Huhn, volunteer coordinator for Bayou Grace, gave us insight into how that organization is advocating for change and assisting families in southern Louisiana who are most directly affected by the unnatural land loss that continues daily. We hope to  do some environmental

volunteer work on our next trip, September 30-October 8, 2011. Gumbo Stomp tickets are available online here! For more information or to volunteer, email gumbostomp@allsaintschicago.org

Keeping God's People Safe: Level I and II Training
Saturday, April 2 in the Parish Hall
Level I:  9:00-11:30am -- Learn how to keep our children safe from sexual abuse in the church and in our community.   Parents  of children and teens in our congregation are especially encouraged to attend.  This session is mandatory for anyone working with our children or youth (or hoping to in the future!), clergy, staff, vestry, and persons providing care to home bound members of our community.

Level II:  12-2:30pm - How can we sustain healthy boundaries among adults in our community?  How do we prevent the misuse of power as we minister to one another?  How can we work together to safeguard the more vulnerable members of our community from emotional and sexual abuse?  This session is open to all members of our community who are seeking to live into the fullness of our baptismal vow to "respect the dignity of all persons."  Those working with Tuesday night guests would especially benefit from this workshop.  It is mandatory for leaders of programs that minister to adults, clergy, staff, vestry, and persons providing care to home bound members of our community.   Levels I & II will both be facilitated by Jeanne Wirpsa, vestry member and certified "trainer" of the Episcopal Diocese of Chicago.

Please register by Monday, March 28, 2011 so we can have adequate materials available.

For further information & to sign up contact Jeanne at : adultformation@allsaintschicago.org  or 773-316-6936 (cell).

Do you have a prayer request? Will you pray for others?
What are we doing when we say prayers of thanksgiving and intercessions for others in church? Is praying at home in private different from praying together in church? In the intentional act of naming the joys and concerns of others, we become present to those for whom we pray. The "Prayers of the People" is a time in our service to say aloud the names of people who have asked for prayers. It doesn't matter if you know them. It doesn't matter if two or ten or one hundred people are speaking at the same time. This cacophony of prayer is heard by God. The intercessions we pray in church provide a tangible and powerful way for each one of us to partner with God in compassion, mercy, and justice.

To add a name to the Parish Prayer List (names listed in the church bulletin, and the weekly e-mail announcements) please enter them at prayerlist@allsaintschicago.org
