Dear Friends,
As we continue on into Lent--the weather is becoming a tad bit kinder. I invite you to take advantage of the later afternoons by getting outside with your family, or just venturing forth by yourself and enjoying a bit of time outside. Be daring--leave your cell phone home and just let yourself be in the "now" of the moment. See what God has to say to you. There will time enough for the e-mails.
Our Sunday morning Lenten Adult Faith Explorations series will continue this week--with an exploration on ways to care for ourselves and ones we love. Our mid-week Inquirer's class will focus on the History of the Anglican Church and our Friday night movie series will feature "For the Bible Tells me So" this week and "North Country" next Friday.
I look forward to seeing you out and about or at one of our Lenten Programs and this Sunday!
All the best,
Bonnie

ADULT FAITH EXPLORATIONS LENTEN PROGRAM: "Ashes to Ashes: A Body-Centered Faith" | |
Sunday, March 20, 10:15-11 in the Parish Hall:
Caring for Ourselves and Others, Body Mind and Soul
Julie Donalek and Rev. Fran Holliday will facilitate a discussion about how we care for ourselves in a world where we have so many resources available and yet so many people cannot access these services or do not for a variety of reasons. We will look at some of the health care struggles of people with and without means. The discussion will also look at biblical mandates and theological issues around caring for ourselves and others.
Sunday, March 27, 10:15-11 in Parish Hall:
"Violence and Healing: In Scripture and In Our World"
Rev. Carol Reese will reflect on Jesus' healing narratives in light of her experience as a chaplain at Stroger Hospital's Trauma Department working with patients who are victims of violence.
Sunday, April 3 at St. James Cathedral
"A Life-Affirming, This-Worldly Christianity, Hidden in Plain Sight"
with Rita Nakashima Brock and Rebecca Parker Evensong, "God as Beauty:" 4 pm Lecture: 5 to 6 pm; Book Signing and Reception: 6 to 6:30 pm St. James Cathedral, 65 E. Huron Street, Chicago. For the first millennium of the faith, no images of Jesus dead existed in Christian art. Instead, churches filled their spaces with images of the risen Christ who hosted the Eucharist feast of abundant life and paradise in this world. Join Rita Nakashima Brock and Rebecca Parker to explore how early Christian communities understood salvation and shaped themselves as the body of Christ that fed the hungry, healed the sick, and resisted imperial violence and oppression. More information about this event here: http://www.seabury.edu/events/parker-brock-lecture-chicago.html Monday, April 4 at Grace Episcopal Church, Oak Park: "Saving Paradise: How Christianity Traded Love of this World for Crucifixion and Empire" with Rita Nakashima Brock and Rebecca Parker Monday, April 4; 10 am to 3:30 pm Grace Episcopal Church, 924 Lake Street, Oak Park, Illinios How did Christianity go from love of this world as God's paradise to atonement and Holy War? The imperial violence of the 9th-12th centuries changed Christianity's understanding of salvation and recast the Eucharist as a ritual with sacred violence at its heart. In doing so, the Western church justified launching holy wars of conquest and the African slave trade. But by understanding history, we can recover Christianity's vision of a life-affirming, this-worldly, justice-seeking faith whose rituals of baptism and Eucharist appreciate beauty and attune people to the Spirit in creation. More information here: http://www.seabury.edu/events/saving-paradise-chicago.html Saturday, April 9: Time and location TBA: "Walking the Labyrinth" Join others in our congregation as we experience the ancient spiritual practice of walking the labyrinth. Sunday, April 10, 10:15-11 in the Reading Room: "Exploring Body-Centered Prayer" Join us for body-centered prayer and an exploration of our own potential to foster healing in our loved ones. We will learn and practice simple, hands-on healing techniques for balancing the body's energy and supporting a sense of well-being. |

| Thank You from Margaret McCamant | |
Dear fellow All Saints' parishioners,
I'm still replaying in my memory the wonderful day that March 6 was for me. Thank you to everyone for all you did to make that retirement Sunday so memorable. I am grateful to all of the singers who worked on the anthem that I chose and then cooked up two wonderful musical surprises for me. Thank you for organizing and attending the after-church party with its All Saints' version of high tea. All your moving and kind words will be with me forever. I treasure the All Saints gifts from all of you: the mounted square of late-but-not-lamented sanctuary carpet and the amazing book of photos of my tenure made so precious with all your loving notes. My knitter's heart is proud to have fiber-providing animals donated in my name through the Heifer Project, and I look forward to using your gift of a combined prayer book/hymnal when I'm back singing with you all on Sunday mornings. Choir or congregation? Nine or eleven o'clock service? Those are decisions still to be made as I figure out how to be retired and how to structure my weeks in a new way. With just one not-at-All-Saints Sunday under my belt, I can tell you that it felt odd to not be where I've been most weeks for 20 years and I missed you all. As you can imagine, though, it was a distinct pleasure to ignore the change to daylight saving time on March 13 and to simply get up when I woke up!
Margaret McCamant

Gumbo Stomp 3 Saturday May 14, 7-11pm | | GET READY TO STOMP, shout, or just enjoy the music! Saturday, May 14, 2011, 7 - 11 pm, is the date for our third annual Gumbo Stomp!, a Cajun/zydeco dance party to raise money for our rebuild efforts in New Orleans post-Katrina and for the first time, help save the coastal wetlands. Live music by the terrific Midway Ramblers Cajun Band, dance instruction (optional!), and yummy bread pudding are all included in your ticket price of $25. Beverages and various tempting flavors of Zapp's (planet's best potato chips, made in Louisiana) will again be for sale. Part of the proceeds will go towards saving the wetlands, which are essential for the survival of coastal Louisiana and New Orleans. This allocation is inspired in part by a presentation we heard last October on our work trip to NOLA (All Saints' 10th trip). Diane Huhn, volunteer coordinator for Bayou Grace, gave us insight into how that organization is advocating for change and assisting families in southern Louisiana who are most directly affected by the unnatural land loss that continues daily. We hope to do some environmental
volunteer work on our next trip, September 30-October 8, 2011. Gumbo Stomp tickets are available online here! For more information or to volunteer, email gumbostomp@allsaintschicago.org

| 2011 Bake Auction funds are already hard at work in Uganda. | | Hello All, Please read below and see how our money is hard at work in Uganda!!! With abundant thanksgiving! Connie Wilson
____________________________
Dear Connie! Cordial greetings from Arua .Send my greetings and the greetings from Students of Scripture Union to Christians of All Saints. We send our sincere thanks to them for the wonderful donation towards the needy students. Let God reward them greatly.
I received 5000 dollars which you send for the students. I have been for a very serious meeting with the Scripture Union students about the selection of the students who are suppose to benefit from the money. The selection was democratical done by the students. The students selected the needy ones who almost have surrendered the National Examinations due to lack of money from their parents. I have given the names to school bursar with the money. The students are now very safe as the closing date of 11/03/2011 is concerned. I will organise the photgraphs, the receipts, their thanks giving letters and other documents and send them for accountability. I will continue to update you about the money distribution. Once again, I thank you for your tireless efforts in helping to mobilise money for these needy students. God bless you greatly and abundantly. Thanks ALUMA.

Keeping God's People Safe: Level I and II Training Saturday, April 2 in the Parish Hall
| | |
Level I: 9:00-11:30am -- Learn how to keep our children safe from sexual abuse in the church and in our community. Parents of children and teens in our congregation are especially encouraged to attend. This session is mandatory for anyone working with our children or youth (or hoping to in the future!), clergy, staff, vestry, and persons providing care to home bound members of our community.
Level II: 12-2:30pm - How can we sustain healthy boundaries among adults in our community? How do we prevent the misuse of power as we minister to one another? How can we work together to safeguard the more vulnerable members of our community from emotional and sexual abuse? This session is open to all members of our community who are seeking to live into the fullness of our baptismal vow to "respect the dignity of all persons." Those working with Tuesday night guests would especially benefit from this workshop. It is mandatory for leaders of programs that minister to adults, clergy, staff, vestry, and persons providing care to home bound members of our community. Levels I & II will both be facilitated by Jeanne Wirpsa, vestry member and certified "trainer" of the Episcopal Diocese of Chicago.
Please register by Monday, March 28, 2011 so we can have adequate materials available.

| Music at All Saints': The Future and The Time in Between | | |
On May 1, Robert "Beau" Surratt will become our new Associate for Music and Administration. Many of you will recognize his name as Beau is currently our Parish Administrator. Beau will be leaving his Sunday ministry with St. Elisabeth's in Glencoe and joining us for more than full-time employment. I could not be more excited about this. We held a full open search and the committee (consisting of Andrea Knepper, Julie Donalek, Juleigh Ruby, Colby Maddox, George Thiruvathukal and diocesan musician Dent Davidson) and I were in agreement that Beau is the right person for this ministry. I am delighted that he applied and excited that he will now be with us on Sundays as well as days in the week. I'll let you know more about his schedule in future notes.
During the in-between time, Steve Edfors and our own Jae Hoesley will be filling in Ash Wednesday through Palm Sunday. I've secured Jackie Totsch and Jean Lyles, respected musicians in the Diocese of Chicago, to play for the Easter Vigil and Easter Sunday, respectively. The choir will rehearse on Sunday mornings only during March and then in April, as we move closer to Easter, Jae will lead both the Sunday morning and the Wednesday night rehearsals.
- Bonnie

| Do you have a prayer request? Will you pray for others? |
| What are we doing when we say prayers of thanksgiving and intercessions for others in church? Is praying at home in private different from praying together in church? In the intentional act of naming the joys and concerns of others, we become present to those for whom we pray. The "Prayers of the People" is a time in our service to say aloud the names of people who have asked for prayers. It doesn't matter if you know them. It doesn't matter if two or ten or one hundred people are speaking at the same time. This cacophony of prayer is heard by God. The intercessions we pray in church provide a tangible and powerful way for each one of us to partner with God in compassion, mercy, and justice. To add a name to the Parish Prayer List (names listed in the church bulletin, and the weekly e-mail announcements) please enter them at prayerlist@allsaintschicago.org. |

How Much is Enough: Rethinking Money, Faith and Well-being with Douglas A. Hicks Lecture: 6 to 7 pm; Book signing 7 to 7:30 pm Fourth Presbyterian Church, 126 East Chestnut St., Chicago, Illinois Amid economic turmoil, it is easy to obsess over money-and the lack of it. And globalization has made it seem that we have very little control over our own economic lives, let alone the capacity to make financial decisions that can help our loved ones, neighbors, or others in need. Despite these difficulties, the Christian tradition and other moral teaching provides us ways to understand and live faithful economic lives. This lecture shows how this task becomes possible when we-individually and corporately-shape our everyday practices to reflect our best values. Here is a link to more information: http://www.seabury.edu/events/rethinking-money.html
March 24, 2011 Our Unfolding Encounter with Christwith the Most Rev. Frank T. Griswold Reception, 5:30; Lecture 6 to 7 pm St. James Cathedral, 65 East Huron Street, Chicago, Illinios Bishop Griswold discusses the tension between truth and certitude, as well as the place of paradox, in our ever unfolding encounter with Christ. He explores how the question, "What would Jesus do?" transforms itself into "What is the Risen One up to?" and becomes a lifelong journey of discovery and spiritual growth. Find more information about this event here: http://www.seabury.edu/events/griswold.html.
