Dear Friends,

This weekend there is supposed to be a heat wave - Sunday it may even reach 40 degrees! It'll be a good day to get outside and come to church visit with friends at All Saints'.

Please mark your calendar for our upcoming bake auction which is happening on Sunday February 27 between the 9:00 and 11:00 a.m. services.  This is our major fundraiser for our ministries in Africa.  Don't miss this awesome fun event!

If you are looking for more fun and connection in the mean time, stop by our food pantry and community kitchen any Tuesday night from 5:00-7:00 p.m. to help out.  You can contact our volunteer coordinator, Liz Embler, for more information at Liz@ravenswoodcommuntyservices.org.

This Saturday morning from 8:30-11:30 you can also stop by our Market Pantry at the Ravenswood School parking lot (4332 N. Paulina).  Volunteers of all ages are welcome to come and set up and hand out groceries to our neighbors.

See you on Sunday, if not before,

 Rev. Fran Holliday

Solemn Communion Parents' Discussion
Sunday at 10:30am in Church School Room 4
Parents of the children who are 8 or older and interested in participating in Solemn Communion this year are invited to meet Sunday morning, February 13th from 10:30am to 11am in Church School Room 4 (across from the level II atrium) to discuss the meeting schedule for the children and learn more about the Solemn Communion process. All are welcome to join the discussion whether or not you have a child involved. For more information, contact Polly Tangora at polly@allsaintschicago.org.

Solemn Communion is a program for children aged 8 or older in which children spend time reflecting on and learning about the meaning of the Eucharist in preparation for making a "Solemn Communion." For some children, this is their first communion, for others this is a deepening of the experience of receiving communion.

Buildings and Grounds Committee Meeting
Tomorrow at 11am
It's a new year and the B&G gang is looking for fresh ideas and energy and new members for the Building & Grounds Committee.  If you don't have time to be a regular member, you can focus on specific project. For example, one member, Stephen Christy, is a landscape architect, so anyone interested in starting plans for the garden or just learning about gardening should come to our meetings as we move into spring.  The meeting is at 11:00 this Saturday, February 12 in Bonnie and Beau's office (the B&B) at the church.  Come one, come all! Questions? Contact Nancy Lischer at buildingsandgrounds@allsaintschicago.org.

"Not the Last Supper" Suppers 2011

All Saints' is again organizing weekly Lenten dinners, which are an opportunity for getting together during the Lenten season and a great way to get to know people beyond coffee hour. In the past, groups have gathered at parishioners' homes or at neighborhood restaurants one night a week (usually no earlier than 6pm) for food and discussion during the season Lent. Click here to sign up online or fill out a paper form at church.

Please complete a written or on-line form by February 28.

You will be contacted by March 7th with your group information and dinners will start the week of March 13.  There will be five weeks of dinners during weeks of March 13, March 20, March 27, April 3 and April 10. We will do our best to match you with a desired group and day of the week but depending on others' choices we may not be able to honor your first choice.

Questions? Email Barb Giloth (773-262.0639) and Peggy Cushing (773-218-7061) at lentendinners@allsaintschicago.org.

ADULT FAITH EXPLORATIONS: "Art and Spirituality"
February 20 and March 6 at 10am in the Parish Hall
Two community artists will share their work and lead us in a discussion about the spiritual dimension of their creative process and on the power of art to transform ourselves and our world.

February 20th:  Bill Buchholtz, Native flute player
Please join Bill for music and conversation from the heart. This is a rich chance to meet Bill, ask questions, and explore how art deepens our spiritual connections.  Bill's goal is to educate people about the traditions and spiritual significance of the Native flute.  He is widely known and respected in the inter-faith community in Chicago and frequently performs at community events throughout the Midwest.

"Music is in my blood and being a musician is who I am. Since I have Native blood, being able to play Native music honors the gift the Creator has given me. My first flute was a gift from a Lakota Sioux elder who told me it is my medicine, it is a gift from the creator. I am told by many elders that if you don't share your gift the creator will take it back."

March 6th:  Dan Crowley, Artist and Character Designer
Dan is a member of All Saints" and has made his living as an artist for over 20 years.  He's sculpted characters for award winning window displays for Tiffany & CO, as well windows for Hermes and the Stuart Weitsman shoe stores.  His semi-autobiographical cartoon strip ran in the Chicago Free Press for over three years.  He's taught cartooning to adults and kids.  Photo-cards of his sculpted characters have sold at the Museum of Contemporary Art and the Chicago Cultural Center.

"What I love the most about what I do, is watching something come from nothing. With just a few odd supplies, I can watch a character appear before my eyes. With a pen and paper, I can create a character that can help someone understand my point of view. I see the creation process as a lesson on being open to the process and the Holy Spirit. Like a dancer in mid-dance, it's best when you "let go" and let it fly. I'm grateful to God, every time I see something I've been lucky enough to help come to be, but I know I couldn't do it alone. "

Ravenswood Run
Sunday, May 1
On Sunday, May 1, thousands of neighbors will converge on the Chicago intersection of Wilson and Hermitage Avenues for a morning of running, socializing and community-building that raises funds to help neighbors in need.  Proceeds from the Ravenswood Run benefit Ravenswood Community Services' local hunger relief efforts and the student health centers at Amundsen and Lake View high schools.  Register now for the 15th Ravenswood Run 5k.

Darwin Day Celebration

A Staged reading of Tierra Del Fuego by Richard Corley

Darwin Day is an international celebration of science and humanity commemorating the 102nd birthday of Charles Darwin and the 152 anniversary of the publication of On the Origin of the Species.

Please join us for a staged reading of Tierra del Fuego Richard Corley on Saturday, February 12, 2011 at 4:00 p.m. at St. John's Episcopal Church at 3857 North Kostner Avenue, Chicago, IL 60641

Thought provoking and dramatic, Tierra del Fuego follows two interwoven strands of time in the life of Charles Darwin: his voyage around the world in the H.M.S. Beagle and twenty years later as he struggles over the question of whether to publish his controversial discoveries.  While exploring the battle between religious beliefs and scientific advances that still rages on today, at the heart of the play is Darwin's relationship with his bright young daughter, Annie. The play will be performed by the St. John's Players, directed by Karen Hoyer.

A winter supper of PRIMORDIAL SOUP follows in the Parish Hall. Events take place in the sanctuary of St. John's Episcopal Church and in the building's dining room.

The event is free and open to the public. Suggested donation for dinner is $5.

A film screening of Prisoner of her Past, Q&A with Howard Reich and Gordon Quinn

Prisoner of Her Past, directed by Gordon Quinn, tells the haunting story of a secret childhood trauma resurfacing, sixty years later, to unravel the life of Holocaust survivor Sonia Reich. The film follows her son, Chicago Tribune jazz critic Howard Reich, as he journeys across the United States and Eastern Europe to uncover why his mother believes the world is conspiring to kill her. Along the way, he finds a family he never knew he had. Join us for St. John's Speaker Series presentation of Prisoner of Her Past, meet Howard and Quinn, and stay for the reception.

The event is free and open to the public.
