Lasagna Update: We're all set with lasagnas now. If you'd like to contribute something to Sunday's annual meeting brunch, finger-sized desserts such as cookies or brownies would be the most helpful.

Dear Friends,
snowbonnie
After four hours,
Bonnie just fell over...

There's nothing like a snow day to lift everyone's spirits even if it means shoveling like you read about it....

So now, newly invigorated, it is with good cheer that we turn our attention towards our Annual Meeting...

I invite you to gather for our Annual Meeting on Sunday, February 6 at 10:00. On that day we will have an
snowahn
...and Ahn was still standing.
8:00 and 9:00 worship service but no 11:00 service. At the meeting we'll have a lasagna and salad brunch, thank some of our unsung heroes, review, comment and perhaps amend our proposed operating budget for 2011 (available here, and if you haven't yet made a pledge for 2011, you can do that here), elect a new co-warden, vestry members, diocesan representatives and discern our course of action for the coming year. I guarantee that it will be a lively event. Our theme--"The Future is Now" will lend itself to plenty of light saber battles, trekkie outfits, and perhaps a few orbits around the galaxy of our dreams.

All the best,
Bonnie
Book Group February 10

Updates from Southern Sudan
sudan We recently received a communication (click here to read the document) prepared by the development officer for Renk Diocese, Peter Atem.  This was written at the end of December and includes information and photos of the refugees returning to Southern Sudan from the north.  At the point of this writing, over 2,500 refugees were temporarily settled in Renk Town.  Food was an issue and help has been received from the World Food Program. Connie Wilson spoke with Bishop Joseph earlier this week and the number of refugees in Renk County is now over 9,000!  Food is an ongoing issue as WFP is still trying to get more food into the area.  Please keep praying for our brothers and sisters in Sudan!

Want stay informed about what is happening in Sudan as the national news sources are not following as closely now that the vote is over?
A good source for excellent information is from the American Friends of the Episcopal Church of Sudan.  To join the AFRECS list serve, please send an email to AFRECS_E-Blasts@afrecs.org with "SUBSCRIBE" in the subject line.
Save the Date- Freedom to Marry Day 2/13
Save the Date for action sponsored by the Justice Circle for Freedom to Marry Day. We are planning an educational action on Michigan Avenue at 2:00pm on 2/13. Join us for a planning meeting after the 11:00 service this Sunday, or stay tuned for more details. For more information, contact Matty Zaradich at matthewzaradich@gmail.com.

Darwin Day Celebration

A Staged reading of Tierra Del Fuego by Richard Corley

Darwin Day is an international celebration of science and humanity commemorating the 102nd birthday of Charles Darwin and the 152 anniversary of the publication of On the Origin of the Species.

Please join us for a staged reading of Tierra del Fuego Richard Corley on Saturday, February 12, 2011 at 4:00 p.m. at St. John's Episcopal Church at 3857 North Kostner Avenue, Chicago, IL 60641

Thought provoking and dramatic, Tierra del Fuego follows two interwoven strands of time in the life of Charles Darwin: his voyage around the world in the H.M.S. Beagle and twenty years later as he struggles over the question of whether to publish his controversial discoveries.  While exploring the battle between religious beliefs and scientific advances that still rages on today, at the heart of the play is Darwin's relationship with his bright young daughter, Annie. The play will be performed by the St. John's Players, directed by Karen Hoyer.

A winter supper of PRIMORDIAL SOUP follows in the Parish Hall. Events take place in the sanctuary of St. John's Episcopal Church and in the building's dining room.

The event is free and open to the public. Suggested donation for dinner is $5.

Film Screening: Prisoner of her Past

Saturday, February 19, 2011, 5:00 p.m. at St. John's Episcopal Church at 3857 North Kostner Avenue, Chicago, IL 60641

A film screening of Prisoner of her Past, Q&A with Howard Reich and Gordon Quinn

Prisoner of Her Past, directed by Gordon Quinn, tells the haunting story of a secret childhood trauma resurfacing, sixty years later, to unravel the life of Holocaust survivor Sonia Reich. The film follows her son, Chicago Tribune jazz critic Howard Reich, as he journeys across the United States and Eastern Europe to uncover why his mother believes the world is conspiring to kill her. Along the way, he finds a family he never knew he had. Join us for St. John's Speaker Series presentation of Prisoner of Her Past, meet Howard and Quinn, and stay for the reception.

The event is free and open to the public.
