Greetings!
This Sunday we will mark the five year anniversary of Hurricane Katrina. Joey Sylvester will be preaching and Elvia James, the Senior Warden from St. Luke's in New Orleans, will be with us as we reflect on the past five years of our partnership together and the current needs of the people of New Orleans.
On September 11, 2010, Ravenswood Community Services (RCS) will host a volunteer appreciation picnic at the Ravenswood School at 4332 N. Paulina (in the grassy area). The picnic is for all RCS volunteers and is just one way for us to say thank you for all your work-- in the Food Pantry, for the Community Kitchen, with Mobile Pantry, with the Ravenswood School as well as with the All Saints' Cafe. Please come and join us from 11am-2 pm. Please RSVP to fran@ravenswoodcommunityservices.org so that we have enough food for everyone.
Also, please mark your calendars for our annual Blessing of the Backpacks which will be held on September 12. Dr. Charles Payne will be our preacher. Dr. Payne has been very involved with school reform work and he is on the faculty at the University of Chicago.
Bonnie Perry will be returning from her sabbatical/vacation after Labor Day.
See you on Sunday,
Rev. Fran Holliday

Add your voice to the song-- All Saints' choirs resume singing in September!
|
| "God gives us a song, a wonderful, glorious, tuneful, uproarious, joyful, victorious song!" --Mary Kay Beall and John Carter, © 2003
Our worship services will include choir music starting September 19, and everyone is welcome to sing with us. It is helpful if you can read music or if you have choir-singing experience, but neither is essential for joining in. Although there are no formalities like auditions or section leaders, every singer should be able to match a pitch played on the piano and feel confident about carrying a tune.
The 9:00 choir rehearses at 8:00 am in the parish hall each Sunday, beginning September 19. This choir is joined one Sunday a month by the All Ages Choir.
The All Ages Choir rehearses at 9:30 on the Saturday morning before each Sunday appearance and at 8:30 on those Sundays. This choir is open to anyone age 5 and up, children accompanied by an adult singer. This is a good place to sing if you like the idea of a month-to-month commitment rather than a weekly one. First appearance: September 19, rehearsal Sept. 18.
The 11:00 choir rehearses at 10:15 on Sunday, beginning September 19, and from 7:45 until 9:00 on Wednesday evenings, starting September 22. Both Sunday adult choirs (teenagers are welcome in both) combine forces for a few special occasions: Advent Lessons & Carols, Christmas Eve, Ash Wednesday, and Easter.
Please talk to Margaret McCamant for more details: margaret@allsaintschicago.org, 312.475.9045.

| Help provide a fine dining experience for our hungry neighbors. | |

Third Annual Education Celebration: Backpack Blessing and Paper Drive |
| Join us on Sunday, September 12 for the new All Saints' tradition kicking off the 2010-11 school year! This year, we are honored to be joined by special guest Charles Payne, the distinguished activist and author of numerous books on urban education and reform, who will be providing the homily during both services. Come hear what it will take to improve our public schools-- and rejoice in the beginning of the school year for our community's students, teachers, and administrators!
And plan to stick around after both services for a special coffee hour-- featuring organizations working with Chicago Public Schools. Get acquainted with their programs and have a chance to contribute your gifts to their efforts-- by signing up to volunteer!
Make sure to bring your backpack to be blessed-- and help our local Ravenswood Elementary School by donating a package of plain white copy paper. We'll be collecting reams of paper again this year to contribute to Ravenswood who was forced to eliminate their paper budget during the education funding crisis. |

Church School News
|
| Summer Seminars
Sunday, August 29 will be the last time church school leaders will be meeting for their "Summer Seminar" for this year. They will be meeting in the church school wing during the 10 o'clock hour and continuing our discussion after the 11 o'clock service from @12:15 to 1:15pm.
August 29th will consider using scripture with young children.
Anyone interested in learning more about our class for 3 to 6 year-olds is welcome to join them.
Contact Polly Tangora at polly@allsaintschicago.org for more informaiton.
Weeders and Pickers Needed While church school is on summer break, children are needed in the garden behind the church school wing during the 9 o'clock service to help with our vegetable garden. The garden the children planted this spring to grow vegetables for our All Saints' Community Kitchen is thriving. We have already picked lots of cherry tomatoes and harvested the first of the larger tomatoes and peppers. The weeds are also thriving, so many hands are needed!
