Health Ministry

Many churches are reticent about adopting a health ministry program because they see it as one more drain on an already dwindling budget.  However, it is difficult to be "Healthy Presbyterians" without some sort of health ministry presence in a church.  The health ministry team of Presbytery of Lake Michigan strives to help churches think creatively (as well as within budget) about how to initiate health ministry programs within their congregations.  Whether it is sending a team member to a particular church that is interested in starting a health ministry to talk to the pastor and congregation members, or developing educational programs regarding health ministry to be presented at presbytery, we want to do what is most effective and expedient in helping everyone in the presbytery be Healthy Presbyterians.

We will be making churches aware of opportunities for learning that might be helpful to creating a health ministry.  One opportunity is coming this fall-a basic course in parish nurse training at Calvin College.   Having a parish nurse in the church is only one of the many ways health ministry can be facilitated.  Our goal is to offer many methods of introducing health ministry into your church.

Brooklyn - Article In Ideas! Magazine

The Faith Alive Class at Brooklyn Presbyterian Church was featured in an article in the fall/winter issue of the Ideas! Publication distributed through the denomination.

The class leader, Becky Turk, tried to get additional copies to give to the students and their mentors.  However, when she contacted the publisher, she was told that they were all out of copies and no additional runs were planned.

We send an appeal to the all our churches in the presbytery to inquire if they have extra copies?  We would really like to provide the magazine as a special memento to some very special people.  That is of course, after the churches have read the great article.

Learning Opportunity for Registered Nurses

Continue to "Serve the Lord with gladness." Psalm 110:2

The 16th parish/faith community nurse basic preparation course session for registered nurses will be held this fall at Calvin College on September24 & 25, October 15 & 16 & November 19 &20.

A parish/faith community nurse is a registered nurse who partners with a church/faith community staff, members and health care providers to respond to the unique health concerns of a particular congregation.

This nurse empowers members to take a more active part in their health care management considering body, mind and spirit. As a colleague in ministry with other members of the church staff, the primary focus of a faith community is the integration of faith and health. This is done by also completing any of the other six roles:  health educator, personal health counselor, health advocate, referral agent, developer of support groups or coordinator of volunteers.

155 registered nurses representing 11 different denominations have completed the 36 hour Parish Nurse/Faith Community Nurse Basic Preparation Course at Calvin College since the program began in fall 2003. These nurses join more than 12,000 other parish/faith community nurses in the US, Canada, Australia and several other countries in assisting in the health, healing and wholeness of their churches/faith communities.

For information contact Beth Gordon RN, MSN, Parish Nurse/Faith Community Nurse Educator at bg22@calvin.edu or 616-633-5006.

Presbyterian Church (USA) Seal Communication Corner
Why does the church need branding ?

For many, branding is a word associated with consumer products like Coca Cola or McDonald. These companies use brand identities to help shape the image of a product in the consumers' mind. Brands also help to reveal what the product promises. For example, when people see the golden arches, immediately they know what to expect.  Brand identities are used as communication tools. As people see our church buildings, websites, printed communications and even the signs on the outside of the church, ask yourself 'what message are we conveying?'

If your congregation is serious about branding you may wish to consider the following questions:
  • Does the message stand out from other messages of other congregations?
  • Is the focus of the message targeted enough? Is it one clear message?
  • Does the message address the needs of the people?
  • Is the message in plain and simple language?
  • Is there a word or words that come to mind when communicating the church? Are these words in the message?
  • Does the message give receivers a desire to know more and lean in to hear about your ministry?
  • Are we consistently placing the same message on every communication we share. (bulletins, newsletters, website, ads, programs, etc.)
  • Are we establishing a single symbol/logo that can be used by all of our ministries to communicate the message of this church?
  • Does the message have staying power to last for years to come?
  • Can the church live up to this message?
  • Do you have a color that is consistently used to communicate your church's message?
  • Will you advertise activities and reinforce this message?
