Presbytery E-Bulletin
One in the Spirit

The Office of Education and Resources for Mission in Presbyterian World Mission is hosting monthly Webinars related to God's Mission Matters, a podcast to equip Presbyterians to be more faithful and effective in their mission involvement. The God's Mission Matters podcast features a new episode on the 15th of each month with voices from long-term and short-term mission workers as well as theological and missiological reflection. Each monthly Webinar will take the podcast "tip of the month" for mission to a deeper level of study. Webinars will be scheduled three weeks following the airing of their corresponding podcast episode. The next scheduled Webinar is the February 22 "Listen Up!" Haiti Response Webinar referenced above. Register today.

Our Synod asks -

WOULD YOU BE WILLING TO BE PART OF A COVENANT TO PRAY FOR THE CHURCH AND THE WORLD?
W
hen you close your eyes and think about the whole Church praying together from their own place in the world, what would that look like?  What is the thought that enters your mind?  What are the feelings you get as you imagine how that looks?

Between the day you read this and the opening day of the General Assembly in July (2010), would you be willing to join in prayer with all the people in our presbyteries-from Cincinnati to Copper Country in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan-from Youngstown to Kalamazoo.   All of us asking God to seek us out with the truths we need to hear for our life as a Church and as a world.

Imagine all of us together in prayer over these several weeks.  Imagine no one of us speaking but think about all of us listening for what God is saying to the Church and to the world in these times.

Here's what we invite you to do:

1) At least once each day, take time to pray in quiet, listening for what God may be saying about the vision we are called to live out in these times.

2) Open your mind and heart to hear what the Spirit is saying to the Church and to the world. What is God asking of us?  What is God asking us to change?  Or to keep?

3) Imagine yourself in the center of a community of people who is in prayer with you.  Listen for God in the midst of those companions in prayer.

4) Record any truths that come to you that you would wish to share with others-in a journal, in a mental note to yourself-what is God asking of us in these times?  In the Church?  In the world?

5) Write on this blog any insight that has come to you through your prayers. (www.synodofthecovenant.org username:community password:presbyterian, click here for a tutorial)

6) Expect to receive the insights that others have discerned and incorporate those into your own prayers.

7) Ask God's blessings on our dispersed Community in Prayer.

Imagine!  The whole Church in prayer!  Someone has suggested that this could be decidedly dangerous!  We hope you will join us in this Covenant with God and with each other.

A website, www.hand2handcontact.org offers 10 things you should know about returning veterans. You can go to their website for the complete list but let us mention the top three.

      First, returned veterans are exhausted when they get home-physically, psychologically, emotionally, and spiritually exhausted. They often do not have the energy or focus to talk for long periods of time. It will take some time for them to adjust, so follow their lead;

Second, there is nothing black-and-white about what has happened to them. Almost always there are good things that come from a deployment experience. Likewise, there are some pretty difficult things that they face once they are back home. Do not make any assumptions about their experiences;

Third, and perhaps most importantly, they are not the same people they were before they deployed. But do not assume that is a bad thing. The Service Member may come home more confident and with better problem-solving skills. He may return with a deeper sense of gratitude for the comforts that he used to take for granted or she may have found a greater sense of purpose and direction than she ever had before. Yes, there may be many unseen wounds of the soul and spirit. But there are tremendous resources to help heal those wounds, both for the Service Member and the Service Member's family, and an ever growing number of people who truly care and want to help.

There is not some quick program that will make things all right, but congregations and clergy can work at providing a welcoming presence, with an open heart and an open mind but also providing space for the returned veterans to find their place. We live in an impatient society who doesn't mind making an effort to help people in need as long as it can be done quickly and then we move on to our own agendas. Perhaps we need to explore again the meaning of sanctuary and explore how we might offer that for ourselves as well as others.

Hygiene Kit Project

Church World Service has put out an urgent request for Hygiene and Baby Care Kits. Many are needed in Haiti, of course, but they are also still needed in many other parts of the world. The Church World Service office in Lansing is hoping to send a truck load of kits to the warehouse in Maryland in April. Please organize a kit making project in your church and bring completed kits to the Presbytery Meeting on April 24 at First Presbyterian Church in Lansing. Click here for more information .  Instructions for making and packing the kits is at the CWS website, www.churchworldservice.org. Funds are needed to help with shipping costs. Please note that $3.00 for each box of kits can be sent with the kits to Lansing and $2.00 per kit can be sent separately to the CWS office in Indiana (instructions of the website). Checks can be made payable to Church World Service.

CONNECTIONAL and CONNECTED!
Thanks to technology we have the ability to not only be a connectional denomination, but also to be connected!  The staff of the Presbytery of Lake Michigan wants to ensure that members in every congregation are included when we send out news about the things you need to know.  We especially want to reach out to the leaders in the congregations -- pastors, elders and deacons, key office personnel, Christian Educators, Clerks of Session and Treasurers often need to receive directed communications. Please say "YES" when invited to be on our "Constant Contact" lists!  Our lists are private, never shared, and you will notice with "Constant Contact" that there is no lengthy list of other email addresses when you receive something from the presbytery.
