Belinda Johnson's third grade class had a tea party Tuesday afternoon to celebrate St. George's Day (patron saint of England) and Shakespeare's birthday. Cucumber sandwiches, jam tarts, cheese scones and different types of tea were on the menu.

A dynamic and engaging speaker and educator, Richard Ryan, through his organization Creative Drug Education, focuses on providing alcohol (and other drug) use and abuse awareness and prevention programs to schools.  *Please note the Grades 5 & 6 Parent Coffee previously scheduled for Friday, May 4 is now being rolled into this event. 

Nature Tales

Join us for the last installment of Rocky Hill's nature-inspired monthly storytime for 2 to 5 year olds and their grown-ups. This event is open to the public, so please share the details with anyone you know who might be interested!   

Bussing for 2012-13
Students from Coventry, West Warwick, Foster/Glocester and Scituate who would like to use the statewide transportation system next year must request transportation through the statewide website.  If you experience problems with the website, please call the statewide office directly at 401-222-5024.  The deadline for transportation requests is July 31, 2012. Request forms submitted on or after August 1, 2012, will receive the closest point of pick up or a depot stop location for a temporary bus stop.  For students who receive a temporary stop assignment, a permanent bus stop will be issued after September 17, 2012.  Bussing for students who reside in East Greenwich and Warwick will be provided by those towns and registration will take place in the summer.  Please email Maria Emmons or call 884-9070 ext. 136 with questions.


Upper School

Fifteen students from Pam Matson's human physiology class spent an hour and a half at Brown University Medical School's anatomy lab seeing the actual anatomy they have been learning about.  Students answered questions posed by the lab professor and viewed physical manifestations of various conditions. The students were quite impressive on the visit and represented Rocky Hill School well.  

 

Freshmen T.J. Carley, Shane Woolley and Capri Catanzaro; sophomores Shupeng Song and Wenbo Sun; juniors Leila Jiang, Dawn Li and Bingyu Ren; and seniors Tingying Su, Katherine Roberts and Petra Ross volunteered at the recent Scott Carlson Memorial Road Race 5K and were praised by race director Dr. Judith Pratt.  Read more here.

Harborhill Art Display
Grade 8 students will have their work in the gallery at the Atria Harborhill Assisted Living Community at 159 Division Street in East Greenwich.  Every student will have something in the show, including selected pieces from the course of this year, and some of the pencil portraits they are working on right now.  Some eighth-graders will be attending the opening reception at 1:45 on Thursday, May 10, and their work will be displayed through May 31.

El Oso Quien Queria Jugar
Nancy Maguire-Rambo's first grade Spanish class created a "Total Physical Response Story." Students were given a few sentence structures and worked with zoo vocabulary they had previously learned to create a great story about a bear and a parrot.  They drew pictures of each section and then recorded a sentence in Spanish to go with them.  The video is on the Lower School iPads for all students to see.  You can watch it here.

ACE representatives will present information from recent professional development conferences on Learning and the Brain to ACE parents in all three divisions. The sailing team A division boat placed third out of 11 boats at last weekend's O'Day Qualifiers.  The team finished 10th in B division and ninth overall.

Alumni Spotlight
Sarah Pontarelli '07 was back on campus this week to tell the Class of 2012 the top things "I wish someone had told me before I went to college."  Sarah's brother Will is a senior this year, and proud mom, Patty, teaches first grade at RHS.

Sam Sardelli '08 is headed to China in August to teach undergraduate English classes at Qufu Normal University. He will be staying until July 2013 and will teach English, reading, western culture and writing. Qufu is located in rural China, in Shandong Province.

Focus on Faculty
Upper School English teacher Nick Barker welcomed a baby girl, Elizabeth, into the world last week. Congratulations to Nick and his wife.

Upper School math teacher Terry Coes will be giving a talk entitled "Now that Calculators Can Do Algebra, What's Left to Learn in Algebra Class?" at the annual meeting of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics in Philadelphia tomorrow.
SEA
