Fall Classic 2012 

The Fall Classic Golf & Tennis Committee is pleased to announce that the 2012 event will be held at Warwick Country Club on Monday, September 24. More details to come soon!  

Upper School

Abby Wood's AP Environmental Science class recently agreed to be "Friends of the Polar Bear."  Read more in the Lower School section.

The Math Team placed second in the third meet of the year.  Rocky Hill is currently ranked No. 3 in Rhode Island.  Steven Petteruti '12 remains one of the state's top scorers.  

Middle School

Grade 6 students Joe Voccola and Ryan Barrington measured the growth of rice plants to determine and graph growth rates.  Students are growing rice in preparation for World Cultures Week and the exploration of Vietnam.   

Nancy Maguire-Rambo's Grade 7 Spanish class
recently used Skype to converse with Nancy's son who is studying Spanish in Seville, Spain. The more students speak, the more "boletos" (tickets) they earn toward their participation grade.


Middle School Game Night

Lower School 

Arctic Study Across Divisions
Patty Pontarelli's Grade 1 class visited with Abby Wood's AP Environmental Science class to
compare notes on what each class had learned about the Arctic. Discussion topics included living in the Arctic, Arctic animals and environmental protection.  The seniors agreed to be "Friends of the Polar Bear," while the first-graders agreed to encourage their parents to help reduce pollution. The seniors then visited the first-grade classroom for a presentation by the Haffenreffer Museum of Anthropology on the Native People of the Arctic. All students had the opportunity to explore actual Arctic artifacts.     

 

Fifth Grade Night in Middle School

Join the Head of Lower School, Mike Jedrey, and learn more about MS programs and curriculum, including the recently announced 1:1 iPad program.  Grade 5 students are invited and encouraged to attend Middle School Game Night during this time.

ACE
Lower School Resources
There is a basket in the Lower School ACE classroom of resource books for parents and students on learning differences. Please help yourself to this useful information. 
 
Gallery 
There will soon be a photo gallery of famous and successful people with learning differences in all ACE classrooms.  Who wouldn't be inspired by Albert Einstein, Winston Churchill and Thomas Edison, all of whom had dyslexia.  
 
Parent Support Meeting 
A parent support meeting for ACE parents will take place in April.  Details to follow.

Professional Development 
ACE faculty will attend the upcoming Learning & the Brain Training Seminar "Constructing the Reading Brain: Using Research to Help Struggling Readers."  They will learn about the relationship between the brain and reading development, from acquisition to expertise.
Athletics
Athletes of the Week  

Another brother-sister duo takes home this week's Athletes of the Week awards  Sophomores Garrett  and Kyla Teeters are recognized for their superior performances this winter. Read more here       

 

Seth Curtis '12 is ranked No. 12 in the nation for skiercross.   

 

Anna Yamada '13 placed first in her boardercross race last weekend, securing entry into the upcoming national championship in Copper Mountain, Colorado.

 

Dylan Latham '18 qualified for the 12 and Under New England Swim Club Championships for the Rams Swim Club, a USA swim team based out of URI and St. George's.     

 

National Sportsmanship Day 

Pete Moscariello will speak to all divisions tomorrow about valuable life skills for use in school, athletics, and at home. The Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association considers Pete to be one of the top 10 presenters on sportsmanship and leadership.

 

Spring Sports Season 

US lacrosse, golf and tennis practices begin Monday, March 5.

Box Tops for Education 
Just a friendly reminder from the PTL to please continue dropping box tops in any of the collection bins located throughout campus.  This is a very important and easy way to raise funds.

Meet the new Head of School and mingle with faculty and fellow alumni in the Boston area.
 
David Curtis '08 was named to the Dean's List at Gettsyburg College.  Additionally, last year, he was one of six fellows selected to the school's Eisenhower Institute and the only junior.  The team of fellows went to New Zealand for a research project and attended an International Sustainability Conference.  This past summer he was one of 10 interns selected to the Mote Marine Research Center in Sarasota, FL.  He recently served as Mote Marine's only representative at the Ocean Sciences Meeting in Salt Lake City. David is an environmental science major with minors in economics and biology. 

Eleanor Sharpe '09 will participate in Relay for Life on April 13 with her Brown Equestrian teammates. Ellie and her teammates have been the highest fundraising team at Brown's Relay for Life, raising 20% of the total $94,000 dollars raised last year.  The American Cancer Society recognized them as the No. 1 college fundraising team in New England.  You can support Ellie by visiting www.relayforlife.org/brown, clicking "Donate" and "Donate to Participant".  Then search for her name as a member of Brown Equestrian.
