Monday afternoon, four Lower School and six Middle School students competed in the Rocky Hill School Spelling Bee. After 14 rounds, Anessa Petteruti '17 emerged victorious, edging out Joe Voccola '18 and Sam Dunn '17 by correctly spelling the words "barracks" and "adequate."
Yesterday, Anessa correctly spelled the word "azure" to edge out opponents from Pennfield, St. Michael's, and Wheeler, and win the Rhode Island Independent School Spelling Bee. No words were misspelled in the first 12 rounds, and the entire bee went 24 rounds.
Anessa will go on to the Rhode Island State Spelling Bee on March 17 at Lincoln Middle School and the competition will be televised on Cox Channel.

| Lower School | | Measuring Up
Belinda Johnson's Grade 3 class recently did a unique exercise combining math and social studies programs. Using yardsticks, students measured out the length and breadth of the Mayflower's dimensions on the gym floor and created the shape of the ship using jumping ropes. As you can imagine, it took up almost the whole gym!
Students used oval paper shapes to represent the passengers, crew, and animals that were on the journey and put them on the boat where they would have been. Students worked out the numbers and how many pieces of paper were required to represent everyone. Students categorized the shapes into different colors representing adults, children, the crew, cats, dogs, chickens, goats and pigs. This exercise was a fantastic opportunity to look and discuss the life of the Pilgrims on their voyage. Poster Contest Dr. Elizabeth Lange, a local pediatrician, visited Donna Goldstein's Grade 5 class as part of the health curriculum dealing with the dangers and facts about smoking. The students will participate in a poster contest, the winner of which will compete in a state-wide competition. The winner of that contest will compete nationally in Washington, DC (last year's winner was from RI). Fifth Grade Night in Middle School Friday, February 24 | 6:15 - 7:00 PM | Middle School Commons Listen to Mike Jedrey describe the exciting programs and curriculum offered in the Middle School, including the new 1:1 iPad program. Grade 5 students are invited and encouraged to attend Middle School Game Night during this time. |

More Girls' Bball
After a long sea voyage, the girls' varsity basketball team squeaked out a tight win against Block Island, 27 - 23. The girls, feeling the effects of seasickness, were out of sorts for much of the game but managed to come alive enough in the second half to garner a brief but effective offensive run that extended the lead, quieted the crowd, and helped weather Block Island's last gasp full court pressure. It was a smoother ferry ride home, made more pleasant by the sweet victory.
National Sportsmanship Day
Rocky Hill will be celebrating National Sportsmanship day a little early this year. Next Friday, the school will host Pete Moscariello who will speak to all divisions about valuable life skills for use in school, athletics, and at home. Pete is co-owner of Personal Best and a high school teacher. He has made more than 100 presentations to schools and colleges from Maine to North Carolina.
Boys' JV Basketball
It came down to a thrilling last-second shot attempt, but the boys' JV basketball team was able to pull out a hard-fought win against perennial powerhouse St. Andrew's School. The scoring effort was balanced, with Juan Giraldo '14 and Vaughn Gooding '13 each contributing 8 points, David Golding '14 scoring 7, and Bingyu Ren '13 adding 4. The final score was 30-29.
