Rocky Hill Seniors Reach Out to Help Others Katie Meringolo '12 and her father spent a week of Winter Break at the New Life Children's Home in Port-au-Prince, Haiti. Katie has wanted to serve in Haiti since the earthquake two years ago. As part of a 27-person team, Katie's primary objective was to spend time with children, though she helped with various projects at the orphanage. Katie visited and served in four other orphanages in the area, including one home that required a 2-hour drive into the nearby mountains. She assisted a team of doctors completing medical evaluations and dispensing medicine. Will Pontarelli '12, along with 15 young missionaries and five adults from St. Thomas More Parish, spent Thanksgiving break at the Hogar Immanuel orphanage in the Dominican Republic. Will interacted directly with 20 children, ages 2 to 18, with severe physical and neurological disabilities, feeding them and being engaged with them as much as possible. He also worked on manual labor projects at the orphanage and within the surrounding, impoverished community. On Thanksgiving Day, Will and other missionaries prepared and delivered bagged lunches to the area garbage dump for the local people who were foraging for food there. |
