From the VRC Student-Rep:

Hello, my name is Kai, and I am the student-representative for the resource center. I have been attending CSS for over a year now (transfer student). Currently, I am a junior, in pursuit of my Bachelor's and Master's Degree. I have been in the U.S. Air Force for 3.5 years. Right now, I am at the 148th Fighter Wing.
I am usually in the VRC every morning until 1:00pm. If you have any questions or concerns please feel free to email me. Also, since this is our first newsletter, and you have suggestions, I would love to hear them.
Thank you,
- Kai kmitchell@css.edu

From the Coordinator...
Happy Spring! Believe it or not, we are rounding the corner to final exams, term projects, and SUMMER!
This has been a busy academic year for the Veterans Resource Center (VRC); we hosted an orientation for new students, co-sponsored Bryan Adams' presentation on campus, and were featured in an educational series by the Duluth Vet Center. The student club, Veterans of St. Scholastica, was approved by Student Senate and is currently taking nominations for executive positions. Through it all, I have been continually impressed by the dedication and persistence of military students and military families.
With the hard work of Kai Mitchell, our VA work study student employee, this quarterly newsletter is alive with programming, student accomplishments, and upcoming events. We want VRC programming to serve every military student and military family member of the CSS community. This newsletter is one way to accomplish this goal. With that, if you have questions, concerns, ideas for future programming, or newsletter submissions, please feel free to contact me at jjohnsto@css.edu, Tower 2138, or 218-723-6645.
Best of luck on final exams!
Thank you, Jessica Johnston

Club Updates & Events
| Flag Illumination Project:
We recently purposed, through a fund on campus, to have the American Flag illuminated 24 hours. However, it is not looking like our proposal will make it past the "reviewing" stage. If you are unaware of the circumstance, the flag in front of the school by the Science Building does not have lights to illuminate it during the hours of darkness. We are looking to other options to illuminate it, including solar lights.
Currently the flag is being raised and lowered daily by campus security, but the club is looking into taking over this responsibility. We are looking for volunteers to assist in performing this task. Duties will be to respectfully handle the Flag while unfolding and raising it in the morning and lowering and folding the Flag in the evening. This is a great opportunity to demonstrate The Benedictine Values of CSS and our Patriotic duties as Americans. If you are interested, please contact Brandon Liberty at bliberty@css.edu Upcoming/Recent Events:- Recently we had the privilege to help Active Minds on campus with an event that hosted a Veteran. The speaker was Bryan Adams, who was a Soldier in the U.S. Army. He discussed his background story, PTSD, and his re-integration back into society. Thank you very much for those student-vets who were able to attend and help setting up the event. - TOUGH MUDDER: If you would like to join a team of combat veterans on May 19-20th, contact Brian Hoyland (763) 503-2220 for details. For more information on the event itself: Tough Mudder - Twin Cities |

Students in the Community
| -Thank you to Jon Holst, who represented St. Scholastica student veterans last February at the Vet Center convention in Grand Rapids, MN.
-"I would like to thank Daniel Porter and Nellie Haugen for presenting in my Dignitas class this semester. This is the second year in a row that some of our Veteran students have come to this class to talk with first year students about their military experiences. It has been a great way to break down stereotypes, highlight the strength of our Veteran students and Center at CSS, and increase awareness of understanding on campus. Dan and Nellie did a fantastic job, and I look forward to continuing this in future years!" - Steve Lyons, Vice President for Student Affairs

Featured Students

Featured Marine: Peter Beckstrom Military background: US Marines Active DutyWhen did you join the military? My first day in the Marine Corps was April 10, 2006. I joined for a few reasons, but primarily I was looking for a challenge in my life at that time and I wanted to earn money to pay for college. When were you in the military? (years)? 2006-2010 Primary duty station(s)? Boot Camp: San Diego, CA; Duty Station: Camp Lejeune, NC What is/was your specialty/job? I was an Ammuntion technician for an Artillery Battery. I supplied ammo directly to the artilleymen during training and missions. What is your favorite/proudest moment (from the military/non-combat related)? My proudest moment was at my boot camp graduation when I earned my eagle, globe, and anchor pin (signifying you had become a Marine), and it was given to me while my parents looked on from the audience - an incredible feeling that words fail to describe. What year are you at St. Scholastica? Finishing up my sophomore year. What is your major? Education Middle/Secondary Social Sciences What are your goals career-wise? To teach while I put myself through law school, then practice law, specifically advocacy from some group. How has the military been beneficial to your education? It has paid for it all. Without my military background going to St. Scholastica would not be possible. Being in the military has opened many doors for me and continues to do so. Favorite hobbies outside of school? Anything involving the outdoors and reading! ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Featured Airman: Kayla GoorhouseWhen did you join the military?Dec of 2007. I joined because I wanted school benefits; I was interested in the opportunities the military allowed including traveling, and my grandparents, parents, and my brother were already enlisted.
When were you in the military (years)? Dec. 2007 - present
Primary duty station(s)? 148th Fighter Wing Duluth, MN
What is your specialty/job? Services Specialist and FSRT. (fatality search/recovery team) What is your favorite/proudest moment (from the military/non-combat related)? Shooting an 50 cal sniper rifle and hitting the target from 800 yards with cross winds. (Only five of us hit it out of a hundred people.) What year are you at St. Scholastica?I am a sophomore in the nursing program. What are your goals career-wise?
Civilian: to become an RN and work in an ICU. Eventually I would like to become a Nurse Anesthetist or work in an administrative position. How has the military been beneficial to your education? They have not only helped out financially, but more importantly they gave me time management skills that help me on a daily basis. The Air Force pushes you further than you think you can go. When classes become a lot of work and deadlines are unrealistic or fast approaching, my military experience has shown me that if i keep pushing, it will all work out. Favorite hobbies?Fishing, snowmobiling, volleyball, four-wheeling, and reading Tell me about your Airman of the Year award.
What year was it for? 2011 How many boards did you attend? Three boards to win 148th Fighter Wing's Airman of the Year What incentives did you receive for it? I went to winter survival training in Norway, and I will be flying in an F-16 this spring. Do you go on to the state level? Yes, I won.
Congratulations, Kayla!
